Visions of Spring '08!

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

They're $$$ but so beautiful. I got two at FW last year and I killed one. I'm fine with the plants that I pot up on the deck and patio but if they're left in the pot that I purchased them in I'm the kiss of death. So my lesson to me is, if I'm not going to plant when I buy it, don't buy it. Of course I will be at FW this spring and purchase two more tree peonies :) I'm committed to tree peonies surving or I should be committed.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Well, in that case Venu, I hope your tree peonies survive!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I am tempted to get the dark one. Good luck, Weeze!

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Thanks Harper and Victor. I'm not fond of padded cells.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Ask Victor. He knows all about them, being at Sing Sing for so long.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

They can be comfy.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

victor is being tempted by the dark side...

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Victor, have you ever ordered from Song Sparrow before? They've got 91 varieties of Tree Peonies! Still expensive but you won't be disappointed. http://www.songsparrow.com/2008new/plantlist.cfm?type=TP,&startrow=1&pageType=plantlist
Never ordered Tree Peonies from them but did order some of their smaller rock garden Peonies in 2006 and they were huge bare root plants!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

That's a nice catalog to dream along with, night or day.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Here's a nice variety of Clematis for those of you that are hooked.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Never ordered from Song Sparrow but have heard good things. Silver Star is my favorite clematis source, Celeste. The prices went up, along with the shipping, so I'm afraid people will be scared off but you just cannot believe the size of the root mass you get.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Love the site and have two selected for ordering but which one did you mean?

Maybe you could start a thread on it, Pixie?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Someone is showing photos of the root balls on the Clematis forum. I'll go get a link.

I have about 8 different varieties of Clematis, some are doing better than others. Love em.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I've planted about 70 or 80 but only half are alive and growing. It doesn't stop me from ordering more - there's always the 50/50 chance and probably much better with those from Debbie of Silver Star.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

They've become an addiction for me too. I grow most of mine through shrubs. Try some like that, Deb, if you haven't yet.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I just planted 2 at the base of a lilac tree last year. Thought it would make the tree bloom twice!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, that's the idea. Other way is to try to time it so they bloom together. Of course this won't work with spring flowering shrubs.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I also have a climbing yellow rose and purple clematis together.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Do they bloom together? I have New Dawn rose and The President and they look great together.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Yes, the roses are newer, so are just getting going. This year should be better.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I did the same thing, long ago, with the Magnolia and put three on it. They don't bloom at the same time but do keep blooms going for another month.

On Queen Elizabeth rose I put Royalty and they do bloom together.

Pirl - love the combination of the rose and clematis. So many gardening things to try and so little room. I planted a couple of roses last year and if they are doing good this year I think I'll try it. Also like the shrub idea. Eleanor

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Ok Pirl, I started a thread about clematis....please weigh in your opinions and selections.

Hurray! I hope you realize we're still #1 in posts and Texas fell 600 posts short of us.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

They were trying so hard......but so was I! LOL

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

YOU surely did! Thank you.

Hi! Everybody. This is my first time here. I found this website by accident so I did some
poking around and was amazed at the wealth of information here. I wasn't keen on subscribing but what the hey. Pirl, your roses and clematis are beautiful together. Great
color combo. GP I agree. Too many ideas, not enough space and time .

I have small gardens around my trailer. Here's what I got: Daylilies,Prarie Blue Eyes,
South Pacific, a deep coral shade and a repeat bloomer,a double, looks almost like
an orchid when it's blooming, bleeding hearts and the pink one is self seeding and coming up everywhere and the white one is also starting to self seed itself. Jacob's
Ladder,Iris, bearded and one JI in a very deep purple shade, lilies, oriental and asiatic
lambs ear and some hollyhock and feverfew that thinks it's taking over. I bought a Nelly
Moser clematis in the box at Walmart and it turned out to be a double white. It took a
couple of years to get established before it finally bloomed. I do ok with some Walmart
plants but have to look very closely and be very picky and choosey.

My goal this year is the on going battle with the Asian Lilly Beetle. I found Sevin to be
the only thing that works in the control of these pesky annoying beetles. If anybodyelse
has any ideas on how to get rid of them would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for listening to me ramble. How do post pictures?

Welcome, Sunshine - just what we need, some Sunshine on a rainy day.

Here's the page where you can test how to post a photo or many other learning tools:

Which photo program do you have?

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Sunshine50, here is a great posting by our Dave, Dave47 as opposed to TX Dave about those nasty beetles. Welcome. To post a picture. Click browse and attach one of yours. Patti http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=3765986

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Welcome sunshine! You'll have fun here.

Hi Sunshine--welcome.
My Vision of Spring just got real. I took advantage of our January thaw to begin clearing the useless grape vines out of my new flower garden, which I've named the Grape Garden (for nostalgia at all the work we put into it). Today it is all covered with snow again but I took before and after pics yesterday morning and afternoon which I want to share because I am sooo excited! Here's before...

Hee's after. I got tons of wire, miles of vine, and all but 4 posts which DH promises to help with. They are just too hard to get out.

congrats bebob2. Satisfying and inspiring. I have to tackle unsightly old unused veggie patch with lots of old wire fencing when we get another few days of warmer weather. Nor'easter today, but no snow here. Patti

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Big difference. Congratulations on your job well done. What plans do you have for the "Grape Garden"? Seems like some purple dahlias could use those posts for support.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Sunshine it's so good to see you!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, congrats! I am curious about your plans too. Nice size area.

Van Etten, NY(Zone 5a)

Plans are just forming vaguely in my mind. Roughly, I plan to have long beds on the three sides and grass up the middle, easy to mow. The area is about 25 feet on the 2 sides and about 18 feet at the back. (The very front of the photo leads into my main garden. There are 2 seaberry bushes and 5 blueberry bushes there.) The left side is shaded. I know I am going to divide and transplant hostas, goatsbeard, grape leaf anemone, Virginia bluebells, Jacob's ladder and astilbes into that one. I also want to get a few different heucheras and a Japanese painted fern for the front of it. I am going to move a bench into the shaded back corner. Not sure about the shorter back bed which gets some sun, some shade. I think I may transplant a few euonymous along there for a mass of fall color. The right side gets lots of sun. I already have a forsythia established in the far corner. I have 2 bright yellow potentillas I plan to move. I have at least 4 well established peonies that need moving (because they are now shaded) so they will go along there. Also various daylilies. I want to leave room for bulbs between the daylilies and annuals and dahlias in the front. Oh yeah, also a bird bath in the sun. And now you guys have me thinking clematis. I may get a perovskia, I always love the pictures, but I'm not sure it will do well here or where to put it. How's that for a modest project?
