Oh Mrsbonnie, you must post more photo's of your sinningia's!
Photos and Chat #4
Oh My Goodness ... I am Loving those micro mini's and mini's! They are Beautiful! Ok, now tell me mrsbonnie, do you know a good source for finding these plants? Did you grow yours from seed? I have never ever seen Sinningia's, Streps, or Epicia's for sale anywhere around my area! In Spring I want to order a couple of Sinningia's and Episcia's if I can find a reputable source.
Hi There;
I doubt you will find any of these in your area as i use to live very near you & never found any of them. I did find saxorum the blue one at garden arts in new smyrna beach, they always have pretty plants.Mostly you have to order them on line from either dave's violets or belisles. I do have a good collection myself & hopefully can trade in the spring.I do grow from tip cuttings & seed.
mrsbonnie
And, you do a wonderful job of it! I am very new to Episcia's, Sinningia's, Chirita's and Strep's! I have not been able to keep a Strep alive yet! I am determined to learn more about the Gesneriad family of plants and hopefully do better.
I will have to look for the garden arts place ... never heard of it. New Smyrna Beach is just down the road from me, I live right at the tip of South Daytona/Port Orange area. Don't get to NSB as much as I used to but will have to see if garden arts is still there.
Lin, the lady from the violet club who was here yesterday said her friend got all her sinningias from the sources Mrsbonnie named: Belisles and davesviolets.
Thanks - I am going to check them both out when I get a chance. I'm baking again today! I like to do little goody baskets at the holidays with cookies and bread, for a couple of our neighbors! And, I am also baking for family!
Gotta get back to the kitchen!
Hi;
I think garden arts is still there as my sister lives in new smyrna & i believe still goes there.
mrsbonnie
Thanks mrsbonnie!
That little Love Spots is a cutie!
I spent an hour earlier today at the online catalog of Belisles! What wonderful plants at decent prices, too. They are not even listed under our Garden Watchdog or I couldn't find them anyway. When I do order from them I want to rank them so people can find them easier.
Hi;
I have always had good luck with there plants & hope you do to. they do have a nice selection.
bonnie
I've never heard of Belisles- I'm going to check them out!
I've heard folks on this forum in the past talk about Belisles: http://www.belislesviolethouse.com/
Don't know why I've never checked out their website. I think I'm in BIG trouble come spring! I see some beautiful sinningia's on their home page!
:)
Went to Belisle's site- never even heard of a lot of those kinds?! But saw a lot to wish for! Wonder when would be the best time to order from them since it says they start shipping winter orders in May?
My bank account is safe...they want a total of $90 to ship to Canada.
Wow! $90 to ship to Canada? I wonder where they are located? Does that $90 include the cost of that phytosanitary certificate thing maybe? Even so, that seems pretty steep!
yup..50 for the phyto and 40 for the air mail....ugh
Unbelievable! I wouldn't order if I had to pay that kind of money either!
can we ship here in the usa just tubers & such,no soil or roots to you?
mrsbonnie
I'm not sure, I know bulbs can be shipped without a phyto...
hmmm ... I didn't realize that. I thought any plant material had to have the phyto certificate and the only thing that we could mail without it is seeds.
I e-mailed Parks once, and they told me they could only send bulbs and seeds here, and a Caladium place said they could send the bulbs without the phyto. I wonder if corms and tubers are classified as bulbs?
I would think corms, tubers, rhizomes would be in the same classification as bulbs! I'm assuming the phyto certificate is required to be sure live plants and soil are free from diseases, so as not to transfer stuff into the country. I know some states in the U.S. have strict rules regarding citrus. I remember 37 years ago when hubby had to go to school in California for the Navy and we drove from Florida to Calif. I don't remember where we were, either Arizona or N.M. or somewhere out there and we were stopped and they confiscated a couple of oranges we had in the car! We had eaten a few! Florida the past number of years has had a problem with Citrus Canker which is devastating to the industry so I guess they have to be very careful and not allow fruit from one state into another citrus growing state without thorough inspection!
well if we can send tubers, let me know, if you would like some sinniniga's i can ship some when the weather is a little warmer.

I joined The Gesneriad Society. I was going to order seeds but can't figure out how from their site. It looks like you have to get the magazine to get the info. And from what I understand I won't get one until March?! Any one else a member that can let me know if I have this right?
diane........once you join you can buy seeds from the on line catalog at their site!
I want to place an order this spring from both Mauro from Brazil and the gesneriad society.
let me see if I can hook you up to the list.........you need to sign in when you go to the 'members only section'............your id number will be the one they sent to you by email and your password will be your last name. Once you get in you will find both lists of either species list or hybrid list.
http://gesneriadsociety.org/MemberArea/seedFundOrdering.htm
Ok. I'll try it! I got my id # and signed in before but I couldn't find it, let's see how dense I am if I go right to it now LOL
Well call me DenseDiane!!! There it was right there. I printed it off just in case I can't find it again! Don't want to have to bug you every time I want to look at that page LOL But another excuse to use my new printer YEA So you send a SASE huh... How long does it usually take them to send?
are you talking about the free seeds they send when you subscribe? If so, those are free and come with your first magazine. I thought you were talking about ordering seeds.
I was going to order seeds to get started for trading in a few months. They said my subscription ends in March 2009 so I'm assuming I won't get anything from them until March of this year.
Did you go to the "members only section" and then sign in? Then look over on the right side of the screen and see in red where it says "seed orders" and there will be your lists of both hybrids and species............good luck...........you can order now if you wish.......
The violet with the double blue blossoms looks like Ness' Crinkle Blue. Are the leaves red-backed?
Sally, that is Ness' Crinkle Blue in the first picture! I only know because I have them.
Yes, Sally, I must have thrown away 50 babies because Marjorie is saying we can't sell un named violets or streps. I may fuss about the streps because I grew from seed from wonderful parents these great streps that I want to sell in May.
Gail,
Throw them my way...LOLOL Only kidding as you have tossed quite a few my way already.
Hugs,
Susan
