My friends on DG are mainly on this forum. I have a big request and hope I am not in trouble being on the wrong forum. My son in law just called to say that my 22 month old granddaughter was preparing to go into emergency surgery. Her appendix perforated and the surgery will be very complicated. They were waiting for the pediatric surgeon to come in. This is really a rare problem for a small child.
Please keep her in your prayers. I am so grateful that they are home as they had both taken off work to take the kids to Disney Land this week. Julia got sick so they canceled. Then after two trips to the emergency room she got to feeling better yesterday so they rescheduled to leave this morning. Instead they were at the hospital trying desperately to find out what was wrong with her.
I am so grateful that both her parents are physicians and realized something was really wrong and they weren't leaving the hospital until someone could make a diagnosis. Late this afternoon they did a CAT scan only to find a ruptured appendix.
We pray that her healing is in God's will. Thank you, friends.
They will all be in my prayers! Thank goodness they were still at home and able to find out the problem. Let us all know as soon as you find out after her surgery. Lou
Here is a faithful NOID Episcia. I bought it about 18mos ago at a church Bizarre, labelled simply "Flame Violet". I had never heard of the word"Episcia" when I bought it. It was small and had one bloom on it. It was potted in a clay pot with ordinary garden dirt. I told myself I would repot as soon as she quit blooming. She has bloomed ever since without any added humidity .I guess maybe the above post about episcias grown in domes must stay in domes may be equally correct for those not grown in domes not needing the humity . LOu
Lou, you are really a growing 'dude' there! I grabbed a leaf of Spritual Corridor before she came to your house. She is one of my all time favorite streps.
Thanks for your thoughts about Julia.........isn't it strange that, with all the friends I have in everyday life here at home, that I feel so attached to my DG friends. Julia is in surgery as we speak. Her mom just called me 5 minutes ago.
She promised me she would call the minute she comes out of surgery and.........hopefully, they can get the infection all removed and be able to close her back up.
Be back later
PS Lou, in the early spring you must dmail me for streps. I have them coming out my ears as I planted so many good ones from both seed and leaf. You grow them so well!
First let me say, Gail.....Some heavy duty prayers going up to Jesus from Maine tonight my dear friend. Please do let us know how baby Julia is doing as she will be in my thoughts for the remainder of the night.
Second, Lou.........you grow amazing looking plants too. It never ceases to amaze me all the beautiful plants everyone on this forum seems to grow. I see more and more beautiful blooms coming from EVERYONE here :) I am simply loving them all! Absolutely gorgeous Lou! Congratulations! I just LOVE coming here and seeing all the beautiful flowers. Really makes a cold winters day seem so much warmer :)
Gail, please remember to keep us updated on Julia as she will be on my mind and in my heart.
XO

OK, so I have no flower pictures to show *lol*. BUT can anyone guess what this is?
Yep, you guessed it! It's a Himalayan Blue Poppy seedling from Iceland! There are actually 3 but this is the biggest one. You can see another starting to arise out of the soil just on the right upper side in the picture.
I am trying to winter sow some outside and thought it would be fun to try a few seeds inside. I for over a month I kept watering just the soil and had even let it go completely dry once by accident (yep, you heard it.... I let it go dry.......can you believe that?). Just as I was getting frustrated with it, I noticed green things! I can't believe it.
Now I'm not going to get excited or anything because as you all know, I have never been good at growing seed but I am just totally tickled to see these little guys!
Oh Gail .... I will definitely keep little Julia in my thoughts and prayers! With so many holding her up in prayer she just has to be okay. I know you must be nervous and I can only imagine what your daughter and son in law are going through now. Thank Goodness they are both Doctor's and knew it wasn't just something minor! I've always heard that a ruptured appendix can be very serious if left too long! Miss Julia is in my prayers tonight!
Lou: My Goodness ... you may say you aren't good at posting pictures but you are wrong! Your pictures are great. What Beautiful plants you have! Spiritual Corridor is just Gorgeous - look at all those blooms! I have Chirita Hisako too but it has not bloomed. It's one I got from Allison in a trade last year and it has grown but hasn't bloomed for me yet. I am so bad about feeding, I think I will feed everything tomorrow! I had a very tiny Chirita Longangensis that I bought from Rob's but it died. It was just so teensy, didn't have a chance in my hands! LOL. I love your Epescia! They are quickly becoming favorites of mine and seem to do well for me! I have about a dozen now, all gotten in trades! They are all growing and doing really great. The only one to bloom for me so far is Blue Heaven, which has bloomed twice the past year, and I did have one bloom on Pink Panther last month and it has another bud on it now! I adore Strep's but have not been able to keep even ONE alive in my house! Some day I might get the hang of those! They are so pretty, it kills me every time I see everybody's pic's! I am so short on space. I think the reason my AV's have started deteriorating is because my stands are way too crowded! I have four stands and they are all packed.
Ok, I'm going to google that codonanthus now, to read about it ... meant to do it earlier and forgot! Uh Oh .... I might be in trouble! Just kidding ... I made up my mind to not order any plants until spring!
Ok ... I didn't go googling yet ... now I've got to go check out what that Himalayan Blue Poppy looks like too!
Great Growin, Kim!!
Good news! Baby Julia is out of surgery and the surgeon said it went better than he could have dare hoped for. Thanks for your thoughts, my friends. She will be in the hospital 4-5 days.
Oh, Praise the Lord! Very happy for all of you Gail. Will keep her in prayer until she is safe at home!
I hope your grand daughter will be better very soon!
Couldn't sleep tonight. Said my prayers for Julia and just laid there with my head racing.
SO GLAD I got up to read that her surgery went well and that she will recover :)
Maybe now I can get some sleep.
Gail, I am so happy for you and yours. What a relief it brings to my mind and heart to read your post.
Thank you God!
Gail- So glad to find out the surgery went good!! Kids are so resilient, I'm sure she will be better in no time.
In a post above somewhere, you mentioned not wicking your streps anymore. I just got the trays and got mine wicked.LOL What is the thinking behind NOT wicking them?? Inquiring minds want to know! thanks, Lou
jannich, you and your sinningias! They look great.
For those of you who don't know Sallyblooms is a new subscriber to Dave's!
Lou, I know I tried to talk everyone into wicking everything which is a good idea. But.......
I mixed my soil too heavy with not enough perlite and everything is being overwatered. When it is time for them to go to the next size pot, i will start wicking again and either add perlite at the bottom of the pot or leave out the vermiculite in my mix.
It is easier to put all my streps into trays and not wick them (even though they have wicks in them) than it is to repot all of them right now. (they don't need repotting now)
****edited to say that I just read the older thread and Sallyblooms did announce herself!

Sally, you may have to be my mentor with orchids. jannich sent me two and Cicada sent me two phals. I bought myself 2 Vandas and I may have to entice you into coming over to the house and telling my what to do.
Report on baby Julia as of 5 minutes ago. Her mom reports the little thing is miserable. Her fever was almost 105 when they got to the hospital and because of the raging infection they expect her to continue to run fever for a while. She just got something for her fever and morphine for her pain so she is settling back into sleep for a while.
visit with everyone later
Oh I just read this. I am so glad the baby is going to be okay. Perfect name Julia because that is my Sisters name.
The streps are so pretty. I have a really little one but it doesn't bloom yet.
Oh my, late getting on here and had to scroll straight down to find out if Julia was OK! So glad to hear the Dr said it went better than expected!! I just can not even imagine being a baby like that and not able to tell them whats wrong! And to keep being sent home, as you say Gail, thank goodness they were Drs!!
I had my appendix go on me a few years back and before they could figure out what it was I was in the most excruciating pain I've ever been in!! I've had four kids, all born at home and I'd do it all again before I'd suffer through that appendix again!! It burst in the Dr's hand as he took it out so it was a close one.
So little Julia's trial has me calmer today and very thankful as my 23 month old grandson ransacks my house ..... in perfect health! LOL
Time to go read this thread now and look at the pretty pictures!

Brenda, thanks for your concern and if you are saying the pain was worse from your appendix than having babies at home, it must hurt!
I am so happy that they can even give children that young morphine!
If you knew my youngest daughter, you would know that she wasn't leaving until they came up with a diagnosis!
This morning when I talked to her I asked her if she and her husband were taking turns sleeping at his parent's house near the hospital and she was mortified that I would even ask! Her response was, "I am not leaving this hospital for 5 days. This is my baby, Mom.
If her daddy wants to stay with us that is great, but I am not leaving for any reason."
A mother after my own heart, you don't leave the babies for any reason!!!
And it may sound dramatic but I'd have all four of my kids at home, on the same DAY, before I would go through the appendix thing again. I am not a wimp and it was just TOO much pain! They would not give me morphine (until after surgery) as they didn't want to dull the pain when they didn't know where it was coming from........I had no typical signs so it just got worse and worse until they decided to exploratory surgery and found the appendix ready to burst. And that sounds like just what happened to Julia, I just can't even imagine!
I will admit that with having babies you "know" what the pain is all about so it does make it easier. Not knowing and suffering so much is the worst!!
I've taken some pictures this morning so I'll be back later to add to all of the beauties I've seen here this morning, awesome pictures everybody!
~Brenda
i can't wait for your pictures, Brenda. Please make my day with your beauties!
I may have to be called 'lucky lady'. These adorable high school kids wanted to know if I had any work for them to make some Christmas money! They spent 3 hours together working very hard cleaning out every single tray and reservoir I have.....JOY JOY JOY!
Aren't they the cutest brother and sister?
I told them I was taking a couple of pictures of them to make copies for their mom. They are the best kids, meaning very polite and they really worked hard without a break for 3 hours. Then we ate Whataburgers before going back home.
Gail, Your plants are always so Wonderful!
And ... what a really sweet thing you did by hiring those two beautiful teen's! Help for you with all that cleaning of trays and help for them too, giving them a chance to earn a little holiday spending money! I know their Mom will appreciate a copy of that great photo!
Oh, and I haven't heard of Whataburger in years! We used to have them down here in Florida back in the 70's!!
Your story made me think of my hubby hiring a couple of college students last month to do some work. We finally got city water out here to our little unincorporated area recently and it was the homeowners responsibility to have the trench dug and pipe laid from the street through the yard to where the water comes into the house. Pete saw an ad at the University where a Fraternity was hiring out students to earn money for a trip they are taking in the spring. Three young men came to work! Ha Ha ... I laughed so hard watching them - I told hubby he really needed to go out there to supervise! At almost 60 yrs old, I could have had more dug in their first hour out there! It was so funny to watch. Two were down one end of the yard and I couldn't see them a lot of the time but heard them chatting. The third young man I could see from where I was on the deck. He would put one foot on the shovel, stand there for a few minutes, remove the foot ... look around, put foot back on shovel ... then very gently dig a teeny little space - Hilarious, I tell you! Apparently Pete saw the other two dig maybe a couple of feet and then take a break and sit there talking. He laughed and said they were not going to get much done if he didn't help, so he put on his work clothes and went out and worked with them to get the job done! With him working along side them, the job was completed in 3 hours. I've known a lot of adults like that ... want to get paid but don't want to put forth much effort for their pay!
Lin, I can't believe you have dental work done without an anesthetic. My body doesn't allow itself to be numb. So, when I have dental work done, they have to give me a demerol and something drip to deaden my mouth for periodontal work. Good luck as you are braver and more trusting than I would be.
These kids parents have taught them a work ethic my own mom and dad never taught me. They wouldn't quit and let me go get food until they were through. Not one plant was ruined and not one drop of water missed the bucket from each tray reservoir.
I would hire these two kids to do anything i need done. I wasn't even in the same room with them most of the time and they just kept on working.
We are expecting a hard freeze Sunday morning. Somewhere there has to be a couple of propane heaters I might find for the front porch. I don't ever remember this many cold fronts before January since I have been down here.
I am going to get started on the front porch tomorrow rearranging and trying to make some more room for all the pots still outside They just aren't hardy enough to take a hard freeze which is being predicted.
Tomorrow morning it will be 38 and then warm up on Friday before the really big one comes in Saturday . They are predicting it to be very dry and cold. When it doesn't rain with a cold front our plants get ruined. I guess Academy is as good as anywhere to find propane heaters??????????? Can you all think of any other sources of heat for the front porch?
