Winters here!But having Spring Memories!!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Jaye,LOL That was the first time I ever saw a a gar,and I didn;t want the locals to think I didn't know what I was doing or afraid!!!LOL
We caught 23 black bass that day, most ever, never thought I was ever going to get done cleaning all those fish, and some big ones too,if you catch 4or 5 pounder here in Ks,thats almost a record catch, but there at Toledo Bend,is normal!!!LOL
LOu,Yes it was the trinity!!!!LOL Well I knew it started with a T!
Did it get that cold in Dallas?
Cathy bass is my favorite.but I'm not a fish eater that much, got have my beef!
Where's the beef!!!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

DH used to have a bass boat and belonged to two different Bass Clubs. We fished together for many years. Bass fishing is too much work. Constant casting and reeling. Figured every pound of fish cost us in the neighborhood of some $10,000. No Joke. Not the same as a cane pole for crappe.

Delray Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

Ah yes... As little kids, we would fish off the dock using nothing but a bamboo cane, about 6 feet of string, a hook and a nut from my father's stash of rusty nuts and bolts.

We watered the lawn after dinner most every day and caught our own big fat juicy worms for the next day's fishing "expedition". We would catch sunfish and perch, throwing back the sunfish and sometimes the perch, if they were too small. My fishing fed the family at least 3 times a week. We cleaned our fish and my mother would freeze them. What fun that was. Those were simpler times, when we was dirt poor. Thanks for the memories.

Sylvain.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Christi, we call crappies "sac-a-lait", in Bayou country. I love them in stews! I'm like Tman...a heavy carnivore! Though catfish, is my first choice for anything fried, grilled or in curries!!
Sylvain, you had that childhood luxury of fishing. How many townfolks ever could brag about experiences like that? Not me....until my adult life.
~Jaye

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

LouC,
Yes you are so right, time you buy the boat and trailer and the permits and up keep, lures gas depending on how far you had to drive, fill the motor home with gas and food, taxes on all that stuff as well, these were very expensive fish to catch, sometimes that you didn't catch!!

Sylvain, your so right, back in the early 50's,we would fish the small ponds and catch a lot of perch and bluegill, and a few mudcats too!
Those were some of the best times of my life,no worries life was much simplifier back then!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Little corn meal and flour, red cayenne pepper, cooked in bacon grease,oh man makes my mouth starting to water!!!
I remember the days my mother made salmon patties, doubt if many people eat them today, hadn't had any many many years,to long ago to remember, those were really good!!
Mom made them where they didn't taste like fish!!!
More like a chicken fry!!!Well maybe it might have been the gravy she made to go with it!!!LOL

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Kel makes salmon patties with those buttery crackers. Sounds good Tman!
Indoors..still raining...the ground soaking it up.

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

Don...we eat salmon patties a lot here!! We both love them. My brother goes salmon fishing..hmmm...can't tell you where. But we always get some! I always get salmon when we eat out too. Love it.
Well..I am off to do my shopping, folks....fight the crowds....ugh!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Patties made from canned salmon was a weekly staple. Supermarkets didn't have fishmarkets then and unless you caught it yourself..about the only way to have fish. I loved it with the crunchy bones in it. Probably good for you cause my mother didn't deep fry...just a little crisco in the skillet. Eventually, learned to bake them. Sounds like a good menu coming up real soon. We always had creamed English peas with it. Funny how you tend to forget. Those were good days for me as a child. Probably not for the adults as WWII was in full swing and we didn't even know where my dad was for 28 months. No embedded reporters. I have a letter from my mother's 19 year old brother who did not come home. On the front it is stamped and initialed as having been censored.
Very different time.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Yes,Patti's dad was one of those that didn't make it home,he was a Marine, killed in action in Okinawa,Japan,April 1944,so close to the end of the war too.

Yes the cream peas,I hated them!!!!YUK
Now I love the English sweet peas!!
Cream corn Yuk!!
But love the sweet corn!!!
Yes the salmon out of the can!!!
Patti orders the red salmon a lot when we go out to eat,one time after we got home, after she ate the red salmon, she had a heart attack, ended up having a double by pass that nite!!!
So every time she orders it,I say you remember what happened last time!!!!LOL
Not too funny for her!!!LOL

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Wonder she doesn't bop you on the head. lol hahahahah Mike grills a mean salmon steak. Guess that is why we never have patties anymore.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

She does when she's close enough to reach me,and I say wow! I could have had a V8!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

oh Wow! ROFLOL. You are somethin' else. You're not old but your sense of humor reminds me of my dad. He always had something funny to say. He would start laughing before he could tell us what he was laughing about and then we would all just howl with him. Love it, love it.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

LOL!
I'm the same way, when I think of something funny I can't help but start laughing before I can
tell anyone else!!!
People just think I'm crazy!!!!LOL

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

I just think you're great! So there!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Back atcha LOUC!

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Awww group hug everyone!!
My Dad was a stern man. He was serious all the time. He had to grow up fast when WW2 sent his dad to a POW camp in Indonesia. That took his joy away forever...
If not for my mother's dad, I wouldn't know how to laugh at the world, and myself. He worked at the American Embassy in Singapore for 31 years.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

So sorry, Jaye. I was born a blessed girl.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

You bet!
My uncle was in the Bataan Death March and POW for almost 3 years, spent all his time in a sweat box, very bad case of malaria, very sick most of the time spent his life mostly in The VA hospital. He was a Master in the martial arts and he told me that was how he stayed alive thru all the tortures he went trhu Sadly he lost his mind right before his death in th early 60's.
Well good thing is you can laugh, and you can make other people laugh!!!

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Jaye, my StepDad was a Marine and was very stern as well. He hardly ever laughed.....My Mom on the other hand, she has a sense of humor! At least sometimes. She too was raised during WWII. Her father had passed away when she was only 12 from working in the steel mills. They had a very tough life.

We have much to be thankful for. Yet a time to remember the children now who are losing parents in this war, and whose parents are away at war during this Christmas season. It is tough on them as well. Say a prayer for them, that they will endure thru it all, and be able to have joy in their life as they grow up!

Tman, you are crazy!! But in a good way. LOL.

Had whiteout conditions in places around here, plus cold rain and sleet. Roads weren't too bad though. Could have been worse.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Pepper, I'm sure hot chocolate is the beverage of choice for you right now. Staying away from malls will put you in a safe mode too! Keep warm dear friend.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Love those pretty snow pics! but I love my sky at the moment too ...just to prove it really can be blue here above my snail creeper riddled strelizia Nicholi (only 30ft high ...sneaky triffid) look BLUE :)

Marcia,we had those winds today!!! With snow!!!!

Chrissy,oh my we never have sky that blue!!!
Beautiful!

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi everyone!

Chrissy, that is the most beautiful blue sky I have ever seen! Just gorgeous!

TM, Your picture just makes me shiver, brrrrrrrr, looks "COLD"!!!!! Exactly why I moved South. I figured if the birds had enough sense to come south, then so should I, LOL! It sure is pretty to look at, but not so fun to dig out driveways. Do you have a snowblower? Now I thoroughly understand why you have greenhouses and care for your plants the way you do! You are to be highly commended. I bet they are LOVING you right now....all cozy and warm in their green house!

Supposed to be between 35-37 here tonight, so went out and closed up the "hut" and canopy so mine will stay warm.

South Venice, FL(Zone 9b)

T77, I'm with you, heading south was definitely a good idea. A few nights of 49 degree weather is all I want to deal with anymore!
Chrissy, that lilly pilly is adorable, so fluffy I'd want to jump right in. And the sky is so gorgeous, what a color!
TM, the picture brought a chill to my bones, you are a trooper for keeping all thos tropicals so happy and dealing with the snow and cold.
Marcy- cold and 50 mph winds, holy moly! I hope you have been bundled up inside, drinking a hot toddy and looking at seed catalogs!
Here's a bit of an orange-y glow to warm those cold nights!

24 degrees here this morning but thank heavens, it is clear with lots of sunshine.
The birds are all over the feeder and keep trying to get a drink from the frozen birdbath. Guess I need to find a heater so it won't freeze. We started with almost 70 yesterday and the change didn't come in until around 3:00 PM. Boy, when it hit, the wind was so high had to hold on to something if you were outside.
These 50 degree changes in just hours has been happening almost every week. The plants really suffer. Not like yours up North where they go dormant and stay that way. This is more likely to kill. Supposed to be in the 50's today but then lower 20 again tonight. So glad that our winters are usually dry and only for a couple of days here and there. Stay in and Stay warm. Don't drive unless it is an emergency and that in itself creates another emergency.

Take care,
Christi

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

Good morning everyone!
Chrissy, is that the name of that plant...Lily Pilly? I have never heard of it???? It's gorgeous, as is your blue sky! Don't think I have ever seen a sky so blue!! Must be because it was 'down under' me....lol. Ok...sorry..bad joke!! Hope you are enjoying your summer.
Don, they are still saying no accumulating snow here...yayyy! But the winds have really picked up, and it's cold enough...in the 30's. Hope you are able to dig out!
T77....what a good idea...heading south with the birds!! Why didn't I think of that????? Oh I wish!!
Cathy, actually I was out Christmas shopping yesterday....and the weather was really nice for this time of year here. But today....I am staying in!! Love your orange picture!
Christi, I am sure that sudden change in temps is hard on your plants! It's hard on people too....at least this people! Texas has had some really strange weather this year, haven't they???
Have a great day everyone!!

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

Well now, I know I am a few hours late to say it - but Good Morning! It's only 6.50 am for me right now but I have woken up to the news that there has been an awful snow storm right through the middle of the country from Tx to Minn. Hope everyone in those areas is okay and keeping warm.
Jenny

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

Chrisi, get a heated dog waterer for the birds. We did that for our birds and it works great. We keep it just warm enough that it won't freeze. The birds, our cats, neighborhood cats and dogs and wild animals all use it. Best thing we did for our birds. Other than the feed of course!! lol

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

The good news is that it is already 40 degrees and expected to be in the mid 50's. Bird bath is thawed. DH buys songbird seed and cooks it 30 min at 325 degrees so it won't germinate. We were paying high dollar for seed at WildBird for that reason. Someone told us about the baking . This morning we have our resident cardinals, mourning doves, wrens and tufted titmouse. Just to name a few. The last is not supposed to be here at anytime of the year, much less winter. Another symptom of our planet being sort of mixed up. We have had several birds this year that are not usually found in our part of the world. DH and I were bird watchers long before we were gardeners. Wind is still really fierce.

Chris

Greetings from my back garden on the 24th of Dec Monday morning 6.20 am and only 60F! ...do you realize that some of our temps are only 10F apart ? ...what's up with that!
News coming through that our inland drought stricken areas are copping it bigtime with the first rain in years:) although cut off in some parts and flooding in what was dry river beds the people are all wading around with grins on their faces! Great Christmas present for them they reckon.
What does happen in snow to all of your birds ...how do they cope?
Where do they go? ...in the Winter here our own dam (1 and a half acres of it) is crowded with birds that have come in to spend the Winter ...black swans wild ducks and geese ...ibis and even the odd pelican. Our native birds hang around in my garden as it is heavily planted with triffids :) They set up a chorus of complaints if I am not there to feed them. The Cockies ...grass budgies, finches, kookaburras, fairy wrens, blue wrens tend to come and go depending on what is fruiting and what bugs are around ...it is a real passing parade ...and despite all the little gifts (triffid mulberries, grapes and odds and sods all plonked down everywhere in their own little parcel of fertilizer) not to mention the verandah railings covered in you know what ...I love my little friends.
2008 not far away now ,thinking about any resolutions yet?
Enjoy the pre Christmas vibe everyone,me I am going outside to look at that yellow thing trying to poke it's way through the clouds ...forcast for the next week rain and storms :) ha ha ha at least we aren't frying and boy will we enjoy the food for a change!
Ooops I forgot to say that the lilly pilly is an Australian native tree that produces marble sized (in this case purple) fruit that look like cherries, while ok to eat raw we like to make lilly pilly jam(you call it jelly). A very pretty thing both in flower and fruit.
Have a good one everyone

Afternoon everybody, just came inside, been out all morning, behind the snowblower,it's only a small one, only takes a 16inch path, and when the snow is drifted 3 ft or more,it takes me twice as long to get everything cleared away, drifts were in front everydoor, making it extremely hard just to get out,had to shovel a good hour, before I could even break out the snow blower!!!!
Don't think I've even used it in a couple years took a half dozen cranks to get it to start!!!
My earth star starting to open it's flower, first few petals are white,so at least I know what color the flower is going to be!!!
32* and sunshine today!!!
Enough snow I think were going to have a white Xmas this year!!!

Wow snow blower huh ...foreign language to me TM ...you poor things having to go through all of that,is there ever a time you have a rest? I saw people actually making snow angels in a movie the other night ...I always wondered what that mean't ha ha ha I thought it was snowmen with wings. It looks like fun but very cold :) I think I will stay here and just look at the pretty pictures ...you go have a rest now.
chrissy

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

Just a quick break from baking cookies. Chrissy, we do call it jam here too. Jam has broken pieces of fruit in it. Jelly is just made from the juice of the fruit. Both are good! And then there are preserves too. Almost forgot that. I think the difference between preserves and jam is...preserves has whole fruit in it. Someone correct me if I am wrong...and that's very possible..lol!!
Be careful with that snow shoveling Don!!
Back to work!
