question

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

I have some 25 favorite forums running. They often all say *yes* in the first column signifying there is a new post. When I open the forum I have already read all of them and there isn't anything new. Guess I'm not explaining this very well. Consequently, I open every forum incase I have missed something...sure don't want to do that. Wastes a lot of time with so many to check.

I have noticed that happen too if I check my updated threads and then go back to my home page without checking the forums where the updated threads were located. I think that the YES means that you haven't checked that forum even though you may have gone directly into a thread within that forum.

That said, it doesn't mean that there is anything new in that forum, just that you haven't been there, per se.

Does that make sense? Struggling here with my words- too early in the morning!

If you check on one of those threads and them hit your Back button, they still show Yes. You need to hit the Refresh button to update what you have visited.
Unless you are having the same problem as the Mid-South forum is reporting, you can check that thread called 'Problem with notification of new postings in Mid-South forum'.

Thank you. I have not been using the refresh. Will try that.

It isn't a Back button issue for me- I saw it this AM while actually watching to see if it would happen.

Mine does that too...

I've noticed the same thing-- though I didn't say anything because I didn't know how to explain it Lou..so good job! And it's not because I'm pushing the back button. It's usually when I click on a specific "watched thread" and then go back to the homepage, it doesn't register that I've been in the forum.

If you go directly to a watched thread and then directly back to your home page then all the refreshing in the world won't change anything. That "yes" only changes if you've visited the main page for the forum, so if you go directly to a thread then you never went to the main forum page, so it'll still tell you yes in that column. But if you've been to the main forum page and then go back to your home page and it's still showing yes, then refreshing should take care of it.

If I go to a watched thread, in say the kitchen forum, when I come back to the home page, it will say there is no new posts in that particular forum. So the yes goes away, even though I never went to the main forum page. That being said, I don't watch many forums, but those that I do, I typically find a yes (not a new post in a watched thread) and I go there and there is no new post.

Yea, I never thought about it the way ecrane explained it...that makes sense. However, I'm pretty sure I noticed this as a new phenomenon about 3-4 weeks ago. So maybe something changed?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I've noticed it for a lot longer than that, I don't think it's anything new.

The other thing that can happen sometimes (this is more common in the forums like kitchens that are open to everyone) is that someone posts something that's against the rules (like advertising their business), so the forum list shows that there's a new message, but by the time you go in to look at the forum, admins have already caught the guilty party and removed their post, so when you go into the forum you won't see any new posts.

I've always wondered ecrane....are you a moderator? You seem to know a lot about the goings on here at DG.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

No I'm not...I just spend way too much time here! LOL I am an admin for the new pet site that Dave's working on, but not here on DG.

ecrane3, that reminds me, how is the Pet site coming along? Will it be ready soon or are we quite a way out from a debut yet?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

There are a couple things up and running but it'll be a little while yet before the whole site officially launches. If you want to check out what's there so far, it's at http://pets.davesgarden.com. The Pet Watchdog and Pet Books features are up and running, and if you find any bugs or have any suggestions, there are a couple threads in the "Pet Site" forum where you can posts issues or ideas.
