Successes and failures part 2

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Well, there's a new one for my "list".......she is SO cute! Awesome growing Jannich :) I LOVE her :)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Love that jannich!

Brenda, Bristol's Pawprint is fabulous!

***edited to say that the computer man was here. He had to replace the dish on the roof. About withholding water on new plants, Paul Sorano from Lyndon Lyons greenhouses is the one who told me. When I got that shipment that the UPS man left in 100+ degree weather outside, the plants were so wilted and baked. When I talked to him, he said to not water anymore than I absolutely had to and that was their best chance of making it. He did tell me to put them under a dome and not water.

It was amazing how many plants out of the shipment ended up making it. So, in short, they need to go under a dome for humidity and no watering.

Brenda..and here I was beginning to think I was an oddball and the only one who divided my streps to make new plants.Glad to know I am not alone.I just love that method..gives me large blooming plants in a hurry. I just love pawprint by the way..and love that black gardenia..and of course all the rest of your beauties!

Jannich that sinn is wonderful.I am going to have to look for that one.

Mrsbonnie,I am beginning to love sinns now too.The ones you sent me in the swap are putting out new growth like crazy. Can't wait til I have blooms to show you!

Laura,Ness' Cherry Freckles is so pretty.I love the different colors in that bloom!

Gail,Zapped is awesome! I think I read above as I was playing catch up that you went shopping again yesterday? What did you get?Pictures please!! By the way..the streps you sent are doing nicely. You are so right about needing time to adjust.I thought for sure I would lose some early on but I basically domed them up and ignored them and now they look awesome..In fact I need to split a few of them : )

Kim,Your doilys are so detailed.I only wish I were half as talented as you.I do make both the crochet and knitted washcloths but have never tackled any project like those doilys..Beautiful!

Lin,I would love to trade you some of your white sand beaches for our white snow any day..LOL..Your pic looks so warm and soothing..ahhhh

Snowing hard here today and I get to play at home all day.A relaxing change of pace.I will take my camera around later and see if I can find some blooms to share.I can tell you right now any I do have aren't near as wonderful as the ones you all have posted. My plants in general really seem to struggle during the winter..furnace and lack of humidity is a huge problem for me : (

I was just window shopping on the internet and noticed this special on Chimeras at Robs!

http://www.robsviolet.com/special_offers1.htm

hmm now should I or shouldn't I? I know I shouldn't and shipping would be a killer this time of year but it is ohhh so tempting : o

(Zone 1)

Ooooh ... I haven't looked at any on linr plant sites in awhile. I love that Sinningia 'Bewitched' on Rob's Special Offer page! And, I really, really love the looks of that Gessie called Titanotrichum ... the flowers do resemble foxglove. That is a gorgeous looking plant!

Soooo much Temptation! I swear I'm waiting until Spring!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I don't think I will be making anymore day trips to buy avs and streps. It was a 4 hour drive up and 4 hours back leaving me so tired today I am almost worthless.

Plus, he didn't have what i thought he was going to have. Many were repeats from the state convention which I already had.

From now on, I will just order and get exactly what I want and pay the shipping as I spent 50 dollars on gas.

Having said that, I will let you know what i do get when I recover (LOL)

I am getting very involved with the Corpus Christi chapter of AVSA. Marjorie Bullard is a sweetheart of a person and is even a judge and very involved on a national level. Everyone is crazy about her as she has such a sense of humor and fun to be around.

We are both having Christmas with our families early this year leaving the two of us with a week after Christmas to play with plants. She is coming over and teach me how to groom a plant for show, etc. I am beside myself with joy and feel exceedingly lucky to know her and have her for a good friend.

Both of us are convinced that the very best plants we can buy are at conventions either locally, statewide or national. (certainly nothing wrong with ordering either)

Yesterday was a lot of work and some disappointment when the lady in the av and strep greenhouse told me that what was out was all i could buy......that she had a lot of streps in the back that the nursery was holding for Christmas time. So.........I learned my lesson the hard way. (I usually remember these mistakes best)

If you don't see me around too much, it is because I am preparing for a sale in February for the local club and another one the weekend of Mother's Day.

Please keep the pics coming as I love them as does everyone else!
gail

******edited to say that I am convinced after much reading about wicking that I need to repot everything I have that doesn't have perlite in the bottom of the pot. The plants get too wet without the perlite.......bummer????

I'm sorry you were disappointed Gail, that is one heck of a long drive to not find what you had planned on! Sounds like the Corpus Christi AVSA is going to be very lucky to have you aboard and involved. Plus the bonus of a new friend that is so knowledgeable!!! Don't leave us behind, share what you learn, OK??

Lin your comment above about that plant on Rob's reminding you of a Foxglove reminded me of what I had just read in the "How To Know and Grow Gesneriads" handbook. I'm probably the only one just now learning that Gesneriads are part of the larger family that includes Foxgloves and Snapdragons. I thought that was so interesting when I read it as those are two of my very favorite out side plants!!

Hi Nancy, yep cutting up those streps is a very nice way to share them!!

Jannich that is a fabulous "double" sinningia!

I guess this would be considered a "double" strep then??? This is Mei Lei another new bloomer for me.

Brenda, I just learned something big from you. I never dreamed that snapdragons and foxgloves are in the same gesneriad group of plants. That is exciting to know.

I do have some exciting news to pass on and I will try and do it tomorrow. Our Lone Star newsletter just came out by email and all the terms judges use are in this issue. I hope I won't be in trouble for a very long post. Maybe I can divide it into seconds like:
Design
Horticulture
Excellent
Good
Poor
Then it gives us all the words that judges use in judging plants. It is fascinating to start learning.

***Tia Pink and Coral were the ones I wanted so badly (check out Light Prince columnea)

I only took a few pictures as most of what I got was not blooming. As they go into bloom I will be sure and post them.

He had some incredible cuttings of 4 different kinds of Aeschynanthus which were 6.50 but that didn't make sense when he had a greenhouse full of baskets that filled the greenhouse for 32.50 each. I didn't want a big basket this time of the year and didn't want to pay 6.50 for 2 cuttings to a 2" pot.

Here were some baby Coral ones not for sale. Isn't the color wonderful?

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Why pay 6.50 for chirita tamiana when it is the easiest thing in the world to grow from seed. Every single seed germinated so you don't need many seeds to put 5 to a container as jannich told me she saw in a picture.

Even though Angel Exoticas grow this favorite green and white fittonia, it still wasn't a bad buy at 6.50 but I don't need terrarium plants right now.

just another section of the lipstick plants and some unknown columnea and the Light Prince variegated columnea

Rob's Antique Rose is one of the top 25 favorites but I am off of mini and semi minis right now (LOL). I got this for a friend in the av club. She has the prettiest color bloom!

a couple of small blooms on Party Dress by LLG (I didn't know that when you are searching in First Class often you have to put Lyons first before Party Dress)

a more mature bloom on the same Party Dress

First flush of blooms on Arctic Bliss. WE couldn't find her in First Class so maybe she is new. She isn't as pretty as Iceberg but almost.

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Trust me when I say that this first bloom is not lavender or purple........it is blue and gorgeous with the green edge. She is called Ness' Ruffled Skies. I couldn't find her either in First Class. Since all these avs and streps were ordered from Lyndon Lyons I guess it has to be a Sorano new one?????

Nothing else is blooming but will post as they start to bloom, including the streps

Thank you ladies. That little sinningia is something special.

Thats wonderful news Gail. What a great way to learn, from a pro! Can't get any better than that.Nice pictures.Isn't that cool about the chirita,I saw the picture on another well know website and it was so cute.

Brenda, your strep is beautiful as always!

Oh Nannccyyy,Where the pictures...LOL.

Here is a good story. I first sent you Scarlet Red because I knew I would kill her. You propagated her and sent one back to me. Guess what? She is dead already and yours is blooming her little top off!

**You can't see the dead bottom leaves on Peg o My Heart but she is coming your way in the morning before I kill her!

Good morning Gail,

I hope you didn't thow away the scarlet red. That was the mom plant I sent back to you.I just kept the cutting. It maybe just went dorment for alittle while?

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Boy, I've missed out on a lot the last couple days! Beautiful pics averyone.
Gail, I'm a sucker for the lipsticks and columneas. I would have had to leave with something! That Coral one is the one you posted a pic of in a full basket from the other trip wasn't it? I looked online until I found someone that sells what looked like it online. I WILL have that one! LOL Much as I love plants, trailers and cascaders are my favorites. Is that Party Dress AV a dusty rose or mauvey pink? Or pink pink? LOL SOunds stupid when I read what I just wrote!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am taxing my brain to come up with the right color. Party Dress fades from a dark true pink to lighter shades of almost (but not quite) baby pink with edges in white .....very ruffled looking blooms.........(there is absolutely no dusty rose or mauve pink in her bloom)

Don't get mad at me jannich.......she went to heaven (Scarlet Red that is)
But I have a Ozark Pink Popcorn that looks real good........she is not staying in my house for sure..........

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

jannich , I know that you and others are on dial up so after these pics, someone start a new thread, please.

Aaaah ... I love, love that AV Arctic Bliss! That is so pretty. I looked on line but only found one with that name, Lyndon Lyons Arctic Bliss. It doesn't look like your pic at all- check it out, top row far right-very different! http://www.lyndonlyon.com/AV%20Gallery%202006.html

Oh man, I love the Sinningia's! I agree about S. tamiana Gail ... I think $6.50 was too much for that little pot when it grows easily from seed. I have some seeds sprouting now and hope I can keep them alive for plants to trade in spring.

Is Peg O My Heart a Sinningia??? I love the looks of her. What color is the bloom? And, what about Scarlet Red? Sinningia or Columnea?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Morninglight is a very soft pink and yellow

Thumbnail by gessiegail
(Zone 1)

Oh ... the photo's of all the Streps is just killing me! I don't know why I CAN'T keep one alive!!???@@!!

Ok Gail .... now, what's the name on that Beautiful Begonia???

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Jealous Heart is a pretty one.

Good morning, Lin...........The lady in Seguin never tags her begonias so i don't know what she is but i do know ....that by spring I will have an awesome collection to share.

Ok Ladies & Gents: Gessiegail asked me to start a new thread since it's hard for those with dial up to access this one, since it's gotten so long.

So ... here's the new thread: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/795867/

Hope to see y'all there!
