Probably laying low. I bet they'll be out in force today!
Let It Snow!
Hows it going today sybil?
We're going to get up to 50 degrees today but have 35mph wind gusts!
The feeders are flying sideways and the birds are hanging on for dear life. :-)
Yes its very windy here too! One of my pole feeders is listing starboard! And a big piece of my dead birch came down... waiting for the rest of it to blow over also! :) (please dont hit the fence)
Enjoying these snow pics everyone....I hope I don't have any this year! LOL!
Pell & GM...We had that wind yesterday and I am still picking up stuff all over the yard. It ever picked up some hay that I had mulched with and carried it off to the field. Some of my "makeshift" feeders bellied up and I had to repair them this morning. I felt sorry for the birds looking for their favorite feeder and it wasn't there.
Dellrose,
I second that on not wanting snow this year (in 2008 - Jan/Feb/Mar) also!
We had that wind yesterday too (last night, we had winds gusting to 52 or 54) and it was pretty windy here today. High today was 34 from a low of 26 (avg. high and low for today - 47/30).
We had lots and lots of rain (heavy rain too) yesterday instead of snow.
Marilyn
Marilyn,
We got down to about 20 last night but it warmed up to above 40 and not much wind but my hands froze from trying to photo the birds.
Some years we get lots of snow and low temps and sometimes it can be mild. You just never know!
Cold & windy here supposed to get a little snow tomorrow night. UGH! I love winter pics of birds in the snow though.
I have to say, the pine trees snow laden are beyond beautiful. Navigating for 5 to 6 months through the piles of snow and layers of ice and salt and sand - not so great.
Our wind chill was in the teens (12 - 16). Hard to believe it is still Fall with the weather we had today.
I didn't know KY got that cold! Ugh!
Sybil,
Today was an unseasonably cold day with strong WNW winds.
Marilyn, looks like you're in the 1" - 3" snow area for tonight and tomorrow. We're in the "up to 1 in." section, the birds are gonna be cold!
Sybil, our max low is -10 but we usually only see 1 or 2 nights of that per winter. We can have sustained periods of below freezing weather but not usually more than a couple of weeks at a time. Our back and forth temps and lack of any real snow cover causes a lot of soil heaving, which causes gardening problems. I think I'd rather deal with that though than your colds temps and lots of snow, I'm a real weenie when it comes to the really old weather ;-)
Our winters for the last few years have been as you describe. This year may be a REAL Minnesota winter.
Snowing again.
Sybil, are you close to Minneapolis? If so, what's the forecast for this coming weekend? No snow, sleet or freezing rain, I hope!!!
The snow kept dodging us last year. :( I hope we can get at least some this year!!
Sadie,
Lucky you! I don't want snow and that's what I saw on the local news today of 1- 3". Bummer.
I too would rather have the heaving and not cold temps, than to have snow and really cold temps. ;-)
Wow, great pics! The poor little Junco sure is puffed up from the cold!
How much snow have you gotten?
I absolutely love the Junco picture, Bebop2!! Very pretty!
That is a great Junco shot bebop!!
Your right the other 2 are House Finch.
I know what you mean about the Titmouse; I've never had much luck w/ them.
Starting to snow here now!!
Sadie_mae, we shoveled about a foot today.
That is one puffed up Junco! LOL
indiana_lily - about 2.5 hours north of Mpls. Snowing steadily today. Heck of a 30 mile drive I had to get home early!
Happy to see other snow birds!
Here is a bird for everybody to identify. You were all talking about Pine Siskins so when I walked up on this guy I thought maybe that was what it was. Not. It has a long, sharp-pointed beak.
I am sorry about the picture quality. I was so excited to see something new I got a bad shot. You can hardly tell the bird from the peanut feeder.
Bebop,
I love that photo of the puffed up Junco! I love the Junco's!
Sybil,
Sorry, I don't know what that bird is on that feeder (that you asked about).
Marilyn
Hi sybil, That doesn't look like a Pine Sisken to me.
Now we just have to figure out what it is. :-)

Brown Creeper. A very unusual bird to get on a feeder! Congrats!
Resin
It certainly is Resin.
The photo on: http://www.holoweb.com/cannon/brasown.htm didn't look a thing like it.
Once again, thanks!
With this sudden surge of snowfalls, the poor thing probably can't find anything else to eat.
OMG! How awesome, Sybil!!! I love the snow pics!!
Sybil,
Wonderful you got a Brown Creeper!
Great shots and comments!
I second that awesome!!! That Junco is a winner. Looks like he is about to blowup!! lol
LOL on the junco!!!
