What brings back the memories?

(Zone 7a)

I was just listening to the radio and heard a song I haven't heard in a while. Guns N' Roses "November Rain". It's very sad song and it reminded me of the time my DD went missing. I first heard the song during that time and I cried all day. (Yes, it was November when she disappeared.)

She was living with friends at the time and disappeared on her way home from work. We, of course, feared the worst. We contacted everyone we knew but no one had seen or heard from her. Her boss said she had appeared sad that day and was crying when she left for the day. I drove around her old haunts looking for a sign of her for weeks. Nothing.

Then, one October night, three years later, the phone rang. It was her and she was at the bus station and could I come get her. COME GET HER?!?! Are you kidding me? DH and I broke land speed records getting to the bus station! We even cut off a police car when we parked! (He undersrtood when DH explained.)

She had gotten pregnant and was afraid to face me. So, she went with another friend to California. She had her baby and gave him up to an adoption agency six weeks after he was born. Then she didn't know how to come home and spent the rest of the time with an abusive boyfriend.

This, of course, is very condensed. But you get the idea.

So, who has a song that brings back strong memories? That can bring the laughter or tears immediately?

Or maybe something else, like a smell or old movie? Anything? Anyone?

Since then I haven't been able to hear that song without weeping at least for a minute.

Hugs to all, Kwanjin

Green Day- Wake me up when September ends 9/11 memories
James Taylor I always thought that I'd see you again (same thing)
Tim McGraw I'm already Home
Big and Rich 8th of November

I bawl like a baby everytime I hear these songs. My mom can not listen to Jim Croce photographs and Memories. It was her and a boyfriends song in high school. He got arrested for being AWOL and they were seperated, and she has NEVER gotten over him

Music is so personal sometimes.

Kwan, so glad to hear your DD came home. I can't imagine what a parent goes through with a child missing. My 9 yr old disappeared for an hour once. I was a mess!!

Janis

(Zone 7a)

It was aweful and now she's doing better. We've rebonded and things are going to be great!

I have another song. The Last Rose of Summer
An Irish tune that makes me break down EVERY time. DH and I were watching a PBS concert one night and they played that song and it was all over. He'd never seen that happen to me before and for ten minutes after I couldn't tell him what the trouble was! LOL

My son was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1981. He was 19 and at his funeral we had two hymns sung: How Great Thou Art and In the Garden. They were two of my favorite hymns but after his funeral they took on even greater meaning to me. He was a strong-willed person (wonder who he got that from?) so in addition to those hymns, we had the words to "My Way" read because Tommy was such a "my way" type of person.

So glad your daughter showed up again, kwan, and is part of your life again. That's what you call a happy ending or should I say a "new beginning"? :o)
P.S. I, too, have a grandchild out there somewhere that I have never "met" due to him being given up for adoption. The more I share with various members of DG, the more I find I have in common with so many of you.

(Zone 7a)

The family that adopted my grandson (that sounds wierd even to me now) decided to keep the name that my daughter gave him. Phoenix. I've always liked it and think maybe someday I'll get to meet him.

I'm finding more in common every day, too, Marsue. Thanks for sharing with us and know that we'll always care about you.

Celia

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Thanks so much, Celia. That means a lot. and you are fortunate that you know what your grandson's name is--it gives you somewhat of a 'connection' to him.

Marilyn

(Zone 7a)

See? I didn't know your name was Marilyn. All this time I thought it was Marsue! LOL

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

LOL -- marsue is a contraction of my first and middle names: Marilyn Sue. You may call me either marsue or Marilyn, whichever is fine. My grandchildren call me "Ma Susie". :o)

P.S. somehow I can't picture "Celia" being a security guard but "kwanjin" seems like a perfect name for a security guard. Did you know that Quanjin (I think that is the Chinese spelling) is considered by the Chinese (Buddhists, perhaps) to be the goddess of peace?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

kwanjin, and marsue- wow, I can't imagine going through that as a parent.
THere's a (horrible) tear jerking song on the radio currently about the poor boy who buys new shoes for his dying mom for Christmas.
My daughter's chorus will be doingHave yourself a Merry Little Christmas. Which will make me cry. (muddle through somehow) Sad to me.
My youngest's nursery school sang a little Til we meet agin' kind of song at the end of play at pickup time, which I was crying to halfway through the year thinking about the end of his nursery school age and my last baby growing up...
There are other songs that can choke me right up. On the flipside (ha ha) Good Morning Starshine makes me very happy, just cuz I heard it once when I felt really happy and it stuck. and Crystal Blue Persuasion.
Scents are persistant too. I love crabapple flowers.

(Zone 7a)

Marsue, I do know. It's one of the reasons I picked it.

Here's more, if you're interested.

Here's my favorite shot of my little statue. I was getting a shot of the candles and she happened to be in the frame, too. I have two others. One is in the backyard and the other is a bust that everybody calls Bhudda. It's Thai, I think but they're all only reproductions. Wish I could afford the real thing.

Thinking about my nephew made me think of another one. "Who You'd be Today" by Kenny Chesney

(Zone 7a)

Oooo! I like that one too!

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

I'm showing my age--I have heard of Kenny Chesney but I'm not a country music fan and I don't even know most of the "artists" you "youngsters" are talking about! LOL
Speaking of showing my age, my 7 yr. old DGS was with me yesterday and he is such a loving little boy. He will just say, "I love you, Ma Susie" out of the clear blue and he really means it. Anyway, I told him yesterday that I loved him and he said "I love you more" and the race was on. He won finally by saying "I love you a jillion, million times more than the highest number you can say!" so I started singing an old song to him from "way back when" that goes something like this:
"I love you, a bushel and a peck, a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.
A hug around the neck and. . . .(and I couldn't remember the rest of the words). He wanted to know where I had learned that song and I had to admit that it was a very old song that was popular when I was a little girl (like back in the Middle Ages--LOL). Anyway, bet none of y'all can remember that one! Ha!

(Zone 7a)

"I love you, a bushel and a peck,
A bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck,
Hug around the neck and a barrel and a heap,
Barrel and a heap and I'm talkin' in my sleep about you.
About you?
About you!"

Dillonvale, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL @ both of you :)

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Hey, Celia(kwan) thanks! Now I can sing the whole song to him! I was going to look it up on the internet but forgot about it.

Janis and Celia, did y'all notice that except for sallyg we seem to be the only 3 on this thread? Maybe we should change the name of it to the "three musketeers" or something similar--like maybe "the three silly DGers"? LOL

Dillonvale, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL Marsue! We seem to be in alot of the same threads don't we?

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

We sure do, Janis. Sometimes I forget which thread I've told you what on--does that make sense? LOL

Dillonvale, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL sure does, I posted to the wrong thread the other day had to go back and edit it cause it made no sense at all LOL

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Well, guess I better get to bed. I finished watching the Hallmark movie and it was a tear-jerker--one of their better Christmas movies I think. The title of it was "Silver Bells".

(Zone 7a)

I like the "Three Silly DGer's" idea! LOL

I knew that song because my dad used to sing it for me when I was little. Nobody I know (except you all) knows what a bushel OR a peck is! I find myself repeating stuff too.

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

A bushel and a peck are both units of measuring something. Guess I could "google" them to find out exactly but it isn't that important to me. I just know that if you love someone a "bushel and a peck" that you love them LOTS! :o))

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I know what a "bushel" is. It is a farm-basket of a certain size that holds things--like a bushel of corn or a bushel of crabs--and is a measure of volume, usually used in agriculture--fruits, veggies, etc.

I believe a "peck" is maybe a similar container, but maybe 1/2 the size (or less) as the bushel.
Like--if you go to a farm stand , you can buy a peck of apples. It is about the size of a med. trash can. They are made out of thin wood slats. The bushel size usually has wire handles.

Then there is a smaller container yet that you can buy produce in. Maybe half a peck? Not sure what that is called. It is about the size of a small waste basket--like in a bathroom.

Does this help you understand any of this, kwanjin?

Gita

Dillonvale, OH(Zone 6a)

The 3 silly DGer's Gotta love that :)

When I was with hubby #1 (the one that is now here on DG LOL) we used to say I love you treeloads. Don't ask me why, but we said it LOL

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Hey, gita, and welcome to this thread. We were beginning to think we had BO or something 'cause there seemed to be just 3 of us on this thread. Now you can join the 3 silly DGers! Thanks for the info about the "bushel and a peck"!

Dillonvale, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL Marsue... now I"m sniffin myself to see if I stink LMAO

(Zone 7a)

I dont' know where my post went! LOL I had answered that I did know what a bushel and a peck were but I guess I forget to hit "SEND".

But thanks for the info, girls! LOL

DH and I say "Love you oodles and bunches."

And we don't smell!!!

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

LOL, Kwan! We don't either--I was just kidding! But it is still a good thing there is no such thing as the "smellinet"!

(Zone 7a)

Or "smellavision" LOL

Dillonvale, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL I could never use a video phone either.... as I run around in my pj's 90%of the time LOL I lost my web cam someplace too.. I never looked decent enough to turn it on :)
