Fuji no Monet grow out

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Ronnie, Is it red or is the picture making a purple look red? What is your in person impression?

It will be a while for mine. They aren`t even sprouts quite yet. Karen

Beth the HPS light was on but it is definitely on the red to pink scale. Here is a pic of the first bloom that was really small. I am messing with a bunch of white fly and aphids so I figured that was why it was small...just not a happy environment right now....there are a few more buds. I will post pics of them without the light on to see a difference.

I still have 3 seeds so more comparison for the summer too...

Oh yes! The HPS light really changes color. That is one interesting strain, considering it seems to morph with each generation

OK here is my flower without the HPS light...

It looks a lot like the same flower I got, but in pink rather than purple. It was self pollinated so that is interesting!

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Beth, That means your flower had genetic potential for pink. Remember the pink x purple blizzard experiment? You have unknowingly done close to the same thing I did.

Now,I have 2 cotyledons. 3 of the seeds didn`t sprout for whatever reason. They looked fine but did not come up.

I also have the new Monet No Fuji seeds getting ready to soak and plant after this last cold spell is over.

Beth,
it looks like one of the buds will open tomorrow... I'm getting the camera batteries recharged as I type.

Beth - I've planted two seeds, neither has germinated yet. How long did yours take to germinate?

Mesilla Park, NM

How long has it been for the seeds? Did you soak/nick? mine usually take two or three days maybe 5 at the most when I soak/nick them if the seedcoat is hard.. but I also use heatmats.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I just plant my seeds. Most all germinate that way. But some don't germinate right away. It's been two weeks since I planted them.

Downers Grove, IL(Zone 5a)

Oh drat. I wish I'd a seen this thread earlier. I'm one of those people that spent $$$ for these seeds on ebay a few weeks ago. This is my first year trying mg's and that picture was so seductive. Disappointing that they will probably not look at all like that!

Oh well, I bought a second type from a different ebayer and received a third as a gift from a dg trader. So maybe I'll be able to have some good things anyway.

Mesilla Park, NM

Here you go Beth,

they look more like the color in your photo above, don't know why they look bluish in my photos.

each flower is from a separate plant.

That first one looks like it has a reversed tube! All kinds of weird things going on with this one. It looks like the white star is not going to return, if it was ever there. It must have been lost in the open pollination of the seller. I hope these plants bloom profusely like they did for me. I think this was my #1 seed producing nil that I grew last year.

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Gourd, Nice pictures. I see favorings to the parent plant.

Beth, what do you think? You saw the Mom in person so you would know better I think. Also, I got two babies out of the 5 seeds I recieved. In about 6 weeks I`ll post pictures.

I also started your pack of Chachamaru you so generously gave me since my chachamaru were not making seeds. I got 100% germination on those and I`ll post results later on if all goes well.

Hi Beth, We posted close to the same time. :)

My chacha's croaked again, these have the worst luck with me.

Yes, the first one has a reversed tube...

and now the second one is torn (Harley hit it with his tail).. but, we have three more seedlings to go here from yours, and the other three seedlings from the some shared with me. Maybe one of them will do it!

I have all 5 of yours in one big pot, so I have to tag them so I don't confuse the other three.

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

I have 2 of Beth`s seeds sprouted. I also have 3 so far of the Monet no Fujis purchased from ebay sprouted. It is strange because two have a dark purplish stemmed cotyledon and the other cotyledon is all green. Beth`s cotyledons have two different shades of reddish purple on the cotyledon stem. Karen

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

So far, I have the two of Beth seeds sprouted and it looks like the other three didnot sprout. I also have 8 Fuji No Monet from ebay sprouted. The ebay Fuji No Monet cotyledons are two solid green and the other 6 are two shades in dark purple and a lighter reddish purple.

Beth - I planted a second seed since the first one didn't sprout. Of course, it could be the first one that sprouted and I might be another one right next to it! Mine has a solid green cotyledon.

Did you both get your seeds from the same seller on ebay?

I planted 2 seeds of Chachamaru. Nothing has sprouted. It is possible that the seeds were older. I did accept seeds that were several years old. Figured what the heck ... if they germinated - Great! If not, oh well ... I tried em anyway! :-)

Mesilla Park, NM

First bloom from one of the three seeds I got in trade.

I was only able to get a photo in the morning, and we just got home, so I wasn't able to get one in the afternoon to see if the color changed.

A - These aren't Beth's seeds? They are lookin a little like the ebay sellers photo. Really pretty! Glad someone got some that are blooming and looking more like Fuji no Monet!

Mesilla Park, NM

No, these aren't Beth's.. but the person I got them from bought them on ebay and shared three seeds with me.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Hmmm ... Beth - I would contact the ebay seller and let her know that you got seeds that didn't produce Fuji no Monet blooms. Maybe she will make it good and send you some replacement seeds! Worth a try. Or maybe Antoinette will get lots of seeds and share with you ... and some of us, too! :-) I really like the purple color! But I'm a freak for purple and red blooming plants, so no surprise that I really like your blooms! LOL!

Mesilla Park, NM

Yeah, I've got to get my little brushes and start hand pollenating, I can't do any for a couple of days, will be gone all day again tomorrow.. Once they start blooming consistently, I'll get out there quite a bit, right now, I can barely keep up some of the work that we are doing... and then I go and join every kind of swap there is, I must have rocks in my head.

3 of Beth's vines have not bloomed yet, so maybe ... who knows.. and others are growing her seeds also, so maybe they'll have some luck.. I sure hope to get seeds off this one.

The first one of Beth's already made a couple of pods, so it has very healthy pollen.

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

I did contact the seller and she said her ad states that the plants were open pollinated so there are no guarantees.

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Gourd, That is very pretty. I have 8 purchased from ebay seedlings so far and 2 of beth`s seeds. This is a picture of the two seedlings in this grow out of Beth`s seeds and one is purple stem and leaf outline and the other is red stem and leaf outline so we probably have a blue or purple and a pink/dark pink.

Here is another of Beth's.. I think that they must have put in the wrong seeds because all four vines have produced this flower color, had another today, this photo is from yesterday. one more seedling that needs to bloom from your seeds.. I won't post more photos unless they are different flowers if that is alright with you Beth.

By the way, the flower has a really nice form, color and looks very vigorous. So it is still a nice glory.

Karen, I sure hope you get some of the "real" Fuji no Monets. Thanks for the info A, your blooms are just about the same as the ones I got and I don't think the white is going to reappear.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

A and Beth, lovely blooms from the Fuji no Monet not's.
Beauties in their own right

Mesilla Park, NM

Beth, hopefully the others will produce some seeds, I have to separate the ones from ebay so that we can get some seeds off those.. I'll be happy to share them if they do well with you guys ... right now, I better get back to sewing..lol. my new hobby!!

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

The ones from ebay have three different colors of cotyledons. One color is solid green and the other two colors are purple and a red similar to your seeds. I`ll come back and post the results later after I get blooms.

It is possible Gourd`s Fuji no Monet can be worked with over generations to get the type more fixed so that it will come true from seeds. What happens with Gourd`s Fuji no Monet depends on what is there in it`s genes. If it has only one gene for the white spokes then some of the offspring will turn out solid. You can remove those and keep breeding the ones that have the desired traits and over time more consistency will happen. It might take some generations of rogueing out the solid color flowers and anything else unwanted to get more consistency with the seeds.

Oh my god, more work..lol

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Or you could let it fly and get more cool stuff like this. :)

This is test grow of some open pollinated youjiro seeds. ;)

Don't worry about it A., I'm grateful you did the grow out and confirmed the same type of bloom that I was getting!

Mesilla Park, NM

I was just kidding about more work..lol.. Beth, did you grow some also this year?

I can hardly wait till there is pollen to work with.. This coming week there should be some more blooming and I'm planning to separate some of the mgs here. I've got several of the same growing and they can all go to another area, so I can do some hand pollination.

I'm doing the happy dance here!!!! I finished my blocks!!!

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

I just planted some because our season is much later than you guys down south. Still, I have blooms all the way up to christmas so I can't complain.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

These blooms are lovely! Are they heavy reseeders? I don't want to be reaping them up like the natives.

I would love to try a few.
