My First Terrarium & Other Chatter

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin, I just sent you info in a dmail on petrocosmea.......the pot size, etc.

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Hi Gail!!!!! You've been missed!!!

With all the plant talk this morning, I needed PLANT FIX SO BOUGHT 2 African Violets at work today! Just got home with them. A white and a mauvy-pink. Guessed I would settle for that since we don't have Sinningias around here anywhere!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

thanks Diane..
I missed everyone, too!

You know we need pictures of your new avs!
I am a lousy grower of sinningias. They take one look at me and start to wilt (LOL)

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Well, since you asked....LOL

Ooooh Diane - Nice Plants! I love both of those AV's! Do you work in a nursery or garden center? Lucky you! I would be broke quick if I worked somewhere that sold plants!

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Yeah I do. Some times I think it would be quicker for them to just pay me in plants! They get most of it back any way! All av's we get are NOID though.

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

I was just going to get one- the pink-ish one. But the white one just kept talking to me! It is double and frilly and cute and...well you know

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Those certainly don't look like noids, Diane. But then, some of my very favorite avs are noids i picked up. I think Lin and I still both have some and love them.

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

THey're still special right!

(Zone 1)

Yep .... I have a few named AV's but still love the Noid's I buy at Wal-Mart and ocassionally Home Depot or Lowes. Wal-Mart always sells Optimara AV's but it's still very difficult for me to ID them even from the photo's on the Optimara website.

I have more Noids than named plants! I just buy what I think looks pretty!

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

My new Episcias are getting leggy or tall in their terrarium Am I not leaving the light on enough or is that something they do? And what do the stolons look like? I think I'm getting some but don't know for sure.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I just keep on sticking leaves when they start to looking bad after about 9 months or when they just get too big. I have to have another one if I loved it.

********epicias don't like me.....someone else better help you and me!

That's the same as me Lin. What does a name mean of you don't really like the blooms or leaves!

(Zone 1)

Hold on ... I will go take a picture and show you what the stolons look like!

Be right back!

(Zone 1)

Ok ... here's a close up of Episcia 'Pink Panther'. See the little stem coming out on the right with the little cluster of leaves at the end? That's a stolon. There's also one on the left and I think one right in front.

And, here's Episcia fimbriata Blue Heaven with a few stolons. This plant needs repotting, it's not looking great right now but it was so pretty when it was blooming last month!

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

WHy are your episcia leaves growing so tightly together and mine aren't? I think I do have stolons. Think I'll take a pic and maybe you'll see what I'm talking about with the leav es and maybe let me know if I have stolons?

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Lin! I think I have stolons! I also have leggy episcias. I took a pic of the tallest one to see what you think.

I think pink panther is one I have. I bought one seller's choice offers online so have a mixture. I noticed a bud on one while I was digging around in there getting those two out for they're photo shoot.

(Zone 1)

Yep ... those are stolons! I know a lot of folks take off the stolons to root for new plants. I am new to Episcia's and have not removed any stolons on my plants with the exception of blue heaven. The very first two Episcia's I tried died. I was so sad. :( Then I read where someone grew them in terrarium's so I potted all of mine in glass jars/vases etc. with lids or saran wrap over the top. Some are in soil with moist long fiber spaghnum around the base and some are in straight moist spaghnum! They are all on my plant stands under lights and seem to be doing great! I had my very first little bloom on Pink Panther a few weeks ago. I really look forward to lots more flowers! I'm hoping someone who knows more about these will give us some advice on the tall lanky ones because I have a few like that too. I've been thinking about cutting them back to see if they will fill out and get bushier.

Now, this just goes to show ... I hadn't even realized how much my Pink Panther has grown in such a short time! That photo above showing the bloom was taken Nov 2nd and the other one I just took tonight! It has really grown!

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Well I see now why it's called Pink Panther! Just about the right color!
Well my expecting daughter called a bit ago. Says tonight may be the night! Could'nt plan it during the day so I could get out of work! LOL

(Zone 1)

Woo Hoo .... Keep us posted Diane! You never know, since this is her first it may be tomorrow before your new grandson makes his appearance! I will keep my fingers crossed that you get to miss work tomorrow. :)

Well, my battery is almost gone on the lap top so I'm shutting down for the night.

See y'all in the a.m.

Sweet Dreams Everyone!

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Night! I'm a goner too!

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Well it looks like you ladies had a GREAT time last night! SUCH pretty pictures.
A few comments:

Kim, Lovely AV's :) Names are not important to me anymore either. IF it has a name, I like to keep the name with it but if it doesn't, that's fine too *lol*
I am SO new with episcia and mine are all tiny, tiny, stolons but I have printed out all kinds of information on them.
Here is a good one for "legginess", also note at the top where it says "grooming" episcia. That is another VERY informative page. From what I have read, legginess and grooming are VERY common with episcia.

http://www.robsviolet.com/repotting_episcias.htm

Lin, your episcia look BEAUTIFUL! I love that Blue Heaven. I have 2 that are only 2 leaves and I'm TRYING so hard to save them. Isn't the foliage on that one just neon? If you notice in terrarium picture 2 above there are 2 bright green leaves....that is my baby Blue Heaven. My plants are SO tiny but I love them so much! I can't wait until they get bigger and truly enjoy watching each new leaf grow. I am SO happy to have found these plants this winter, especially with trying to quit smoking as I don't think I could even try to quit without my babies *lol*

So far I have to say that episcia have been my favorites as they seem like such quick growers and I just LOVE to "pet" the leaves. I admire the foliage so much that I can't imagine what they must look like with a bloom. Blooms are just going to blow me out of the water if/when they happen *lol* Right now I have them all domed but my long term goal is once they make stolons to try to raise one in a terrarium setting and one in the "open" to see which ones I can grow "openly" and which ones HAVE to be in domes. I know that most of the pink ones HAVE to be in domes but the others I would like to try in different spots in the house. But for now they seem to like it right where they are under the dome :)

I can't wait to try those little sinningia things! Those look just as cute as can be! AND I love the fact that they reseed and spread :) Eating mandarin oranges every day for the little "fat jars" *lol* Plan to buy more at the grocery this week *lol*

Today at work I plan to start a list as I haven't actually written down any wishes yet, just highlighted things in catalogs but I think if I take the time to write things down in a journal it will keep giving me the incentive not to smoke. I get bored at work for 5 hours a day and being bored for me right now is the hardest part of quitting. At home I can do dishes, laundry, sweep, "play plants" etc. At work I have to just "sit" there. Luckily I check Dave's at work but that's about all that I really can do so sitting there looking at nursery catalogs and making a list sounds like a fun thing to do :) I actually sit at work and miss my babies all day *lol* As soon as I get home I run to the plant stand and check every single plant I have *lol*...........sick I tell ya!

Hi All;
I grow alot of my micro sinningia's in a plastic shoe box, you can get them from walmart or walgreens, they both work well. Here is a picture of a few i have.

mrsbonnie
your picture are great they look like they have a smell to them they are so cute. Are all sinningia so small I don't have good luck with the small AV I must give to much water
Do you cover your plastic box or do you keep it open. It is also nice to see you haven;t seen you around for a while

mrs. bonnie,
are those 'White Sprite'? I just seem to kill the nice little plants of sinningias. They get mad even looking at me (LOL)

I have never even thought about a clear shoe box as a terrarium.......how neat is that!

(Zone 1)

I really like that little one with the white flowers too! I'm wondering how many different micro mini sinningia's there are?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin, I was playing around last night on search google and came across a vendor called Belise's House of Violets or something like that. They had a lot of sinningias.

the other one is advertised in the back of the AVSA . His site is www.davesviolets.com
He has the awesome Ozark series of sinningias.

I cannot play......gotta work

(Zone 1)

Yes Gail, I have come across both of those vendors since joining DG. Have not purchased from them yet .... but come spring I want to order a couple of things!

Thanks!

I just came in to take a break from more yard work! I mowed and edged yesterday but today I am trimming hedges and raking leaves! It's Fall in Florida! My Hickory's and Maple tree are just now dropping their leaves! To give you an idea of how much pruning of Hibiscus and other hedges .... I have 6 trash cans full of branches and leaves! I'm going to get the blower out now and blow the driveway! No sweeping all that debris with a broom!

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

HOORAY Kim has stopped smoking. Good girl and a biiiiiiiggggg pat on the back.

Oh, the plants are nice too. :)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I need to be working outside but I am in the kitchen potting up......
It is a gorgeous day here with the temps in the mid 70's.
But i do think I have to work on the gesneriads or it won't get done.

I keep bugging Kim at work with dmails congratulating her on smoking. She is having a horrible day she said with the smoking withdrawals. I don't know but I have heard many times that nicotine is every bit as addictive as heroin (which is the most addictive drug)

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

You are right about that. It is really hard to quit. THey say that after 3 days the nicotine addiction is less but I couldn't tell when I quite.

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Oh my friends......did I tell you how much I care about you all?

I was having a severely difficult time this morning. Been up since before 4:00 AM and had drank a whole pot of coffee before 8:00 all by self sucking on Commit lozenges. By the time I got to work I was shaking like a leaf and couldn't help but go in the bathroom and cry.

I ate my yogurt and mandarin oranges (saving my little "fat jar" *lol*) with some wheat thins and as the day has gone on I have begun to feel better but earlier I just wanted to go home and curl up in a ball on my bed and cry myself to sleep. This is truly the hardest thing I have EVER done in my life. Today is day 6.

I have the Belisle's catalog at work and have bene highlighting like a mad woman as one of the reason's I'm quitting is for "nursery" money this spring so I spend my 5 boring hours at work looking up thousands of plants and dreaming about "some day".

You ladies are just THE BEST. Please know that if I don't post for a few days that it's just because it's all I can to do be social right now. I'm trying SO hard but I just want to cry all the time. I know this will pass and I pray and read from the bible when I don't think I can make it another minute. I have been taking St. John's Wort too and can't imagine how I would be if I didn't have the Commit & St. John's Wort, my light stand and most importantly.........my friends here!

XO
Kim

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Yea.........for Kim
You are still hanging in there!

(Zone 1)

Kim: You can still visit us here on this forum even if you aren't feeling social .... we all will understand and support you! You are doing GREAT! Day 6 and counting! You Go Girl!
I don't know what kind of work you do, but you should take a couple of plants to work and sit them on your desk .... or if that's not possible, buy yourself a single flower at the grocery store to have to cheer you up! That's a tip I took from my little sister years ago .... she buys herself a bunch of flowers just about every other week, from either Costco or the grocery store. She always has a vase of pretty flowers sitting on the Island in her kitchen. Just tell yourself that you deserve it! And, Hang in there! We are here for you, even if all you can do is cry! We will try our best to cheer you up!

Well, I'm going to jump in the shower, I am sooo dirty. I finished all the yard work just as it started to pour down rain! We sure need the rain!

Kim this may not help you but it won't hurt to try - it helped me. I know how hard it is I quit after 10 years after I saw a picture of a smoker's lung - now that was scary! I just bought a large box of the little plastic sticks you get for stirring coffee and kept one in my mouth constantly chewing on it. Also try to stay away from things that you associate with having a smoke, like after eating I would automatically get up and clear the table instead of smoking. I also had to give up coffee and drank lots of water - it helps to get it out of your system. Hope this helps, I'm thinking about you.

Susan

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Susan, I am a smoker and have been smoking since I was in high school. That was long before we knew the harmful effects of smoking. In fact, my ob-gyn never even said a word about smoking when I was pregnant with all three children who are now in the mid and late 30's. I would have to give several things that I associate with smoking to even stand a chance of stopping. Drinking coffee, talking on the phone, smoking after eating (that would be good if i stopped eating ...lol)

Georgetown, IN(Zone 6a)

I have been wanting to quit smokeing, Kind of a scary thought, since I have very little will power. Hubby smokes too, so how do you do it if someone is smokeing around you?? I like Kims idea of useing the money for better things.
breaking a 30 year habit is gonna be tough!!
