Well It is getting close for me to get layed off for the season so I think I have all kinds of ideas with the different plants to start growing see what will happen ,
At this rate I will have to have a garage sale for plants LOL. It is fun to make Terrariums and you can use all kinds of jars and vases. I go to the Dollar store and good will to find my jars I tryed in a wine glass but it didn't work might have to try again
Have fun Kim it will be great you'll see you won't want to stop LOL

My First Terrarium & Other Chatter
Oh I am SO loving this thread SO MUCH!
You ladies are the most talented, loving bunch I have ever had the pleasure to share company with.
I just hung up the phone with Gail and I'm feeling so "complete" now.
I am going to eat as many mandarin oranges as I possibly can and save all my glass jars. When we all do our little trading "thang" this spring, just remind me you need a "fat jar" and I'll pop one in the box. Now let's all put our heads together and think of a way to pretty up the lid a little....any ideas? The little jar is as cute as heck but the lid kinda....well.....hmmmm let's be Kreative :)
So is that "greenbean" thing going to be a seed pod? If so, I am SO tickled! I wanna play seeds. I know I won't do very well with them but I wanna at least try *lol*
I Love your babies there Kim! GREAT growing!
Brenda & Lin, Those sinningia's are the cutest little things I have ever seen. Bren, I think I got a few sinngia seeds on our order :)
I am SO loving the episcia right now....they are beautiful and seem easy so far. Not sure what I'm going to do when they get too big to be put in the dome (turkey pan) though *lol*
I love thie gessie family (other than African Violets for some reason) and truly LOVE this family on this forum. You all have made me feel so welcome here and I don't plan on leaving.....even if you beg me to *lmao*
((((( Hugs )))))
Kim
You know the jars of homemade Jams where you take a peace of fabric glue it on the top and put a ribbon on it then you can maybe glue a bird or a flower is that what you are talking about I hope my spelling is ok and you understand what I have just said LOL
Kim/Dimmer
Kim, GREAT idea! I also just got this image of "fake moss" covering the top and gluing a TINY fairy in the center. Awesome idea!
That sounds really great with the fairy and the moss. You can make one for a man and instead of a fairy put a fish on top LOL I better go to bed I think I am getting to carried away here LOL
Kim/Dim
Great idea for "prettying" up the lid to the jar. All I could think of was to paint it. LOL. I don't have a creative bone in my body! I love the idea of gluing moss to the top and the little fairy or a little turtle or frog or some such onto the moss.
YES! That green beany thing is a seed pod! I have tried to get seeds from seed pods on Chirita's but so far, nothing. I put a little snack size zip lock bag around the pod but I think it's just too moist and I haven't gotten any seeds. I've heard some say to take a knee high or the foot part of an old stocking and tie it over the seed pod so that you can catch the seeds when that pod splits open. Keep us posted on whether you get seeds. The pod still looks green but if as it turns brown you might have bunches of seeds .... they are really, really tiny!
Dimmer your leaves are really going to town, good job! I really like the babies that pop up from variegated leaves, so may variations.
I went and took a picture of the streptocarpus seed pod that I'm waiting on to turn brown and ripen. They really get long! This one is still green, we'll see how long it takes this one to turn brown so I know it's ripe.

Speaking of seeds.......I planted the little packet that I received when I joined the gessie society a little differently. I had good success using the bio domes and sponges with some hoya seeds i did so I used one with the gessie seeds. I used one of those air pump seeders that picks up the seeds individually in a little needle nose. It was a lot of work with those itty bitty tiny gessie seeds but some of them are growing now! You can tell they are different kinds of plants too.
Check these out....this picture was taken about 6 weeks after I planted the seeds.
~Brenda
I can also tell that I have two or three streps coming along from this batch of seeds too. I'm wondering what I'm going to do when they all need to get potted up separately ... lots of solo cup purchases in my future and I need another dome or two to put them in!!
Kim we are going to have sinningias coming out our ears when our seeds come in!! LOL Along with several other things. Even if only a few sprout and grow you can see how fast they will need their own spots. Maybe we can hang grow lights under our dining room tables and then wrap the legs in plastic, a whole new growing area!! We can eat standing up, right? :0)
This is sinningia cardinals, another one I got in trade. The big ones are pretty too!
~Brenda
OMG Bren, I am in total awe this morning looking at all your beautiful pictures!
You have done AMAZING with all those babies!
They are SO cute. The sinningia? with the little "bulby" thing.....priceless. Love it so much!
I absolutely can't wait until our seeds come in.
I'm a little nervous because I have never been good with seeds. So I think for insurance I will send you 1/2 of each kind *lol*
I can't believe the size of your streps! That is amazing! You are a WONDERFUL grower my friend, I am SO proud of you!
I can't wait for spring but it sure is going to be fun to TRY those seeds when they arrive.
I got alot of Nematanthus if I remember correctly. I'm going to bring the list to work with me today and look at it again to help me get through day 5.
So guess what's for lunch today?...............Yep...........mandarin oranges and yogurt *lol*
Kimber
Brenda I'm so excited for you. You did a great job with the seeds and you will have a lot of fun watching the plants mature and trying to find out what they are. You'll have to keep us up to date as they grow.
We've been moving for the past month and sad to say my plants are feeling a little neglected. I've hardly had the time to find everybody a place or to do any grooming. I apologized profusely last night when I went in to finally get them arranged. I have larger windows here, so I'm experimenting and moved some plants from the light stand to the windows, the AV's and Begonias love the light, the Streps not so much. Thankfully, I had a last minute panic attack before our first cold weather and ordered some leaves from LL's. The leaves are all down, no little ears so far but a slight tug tells me the leaf is at least rooted. Hopefully I'll have babies to trade. My experience is that, for some reason, it takes longer for babies to appear in the Fall or Winter. Leaves produce much more quickly in the Spring.
Good Luck on not smoking Kim. It's very hard but you will be surprised at how much better you will feel.
Susan
Kim Hope you are still doing good on the not smoking but what is the saying Never quit Quitting. I am going to try a new Terrarium today I also am trying a new thing trying to grow an Orchid in pellets called Hyrdo plant.
I have a prayer plant and it is dying I have 2 leaves left so U can grow them in a Terrarium and I think I will try some other plants see what will happen, When I get it done I will send a picture but here is my new thing I am trying with the Orchid
Dim/Kim
Kim Good Luck 2 you, I have heard really great things about that hydrocodon (sp?) pellets. I can't wait to see a picture of your finished project :)
I checked on my little babies in the terrarium this morning and they look quite content. I think I'm going to fall for this terrarium thing and will soon be pulling over on recycling day not only for peoples plastic but now their glass *lol* Sick I tell ya, sick......and I LOVE it!
Oh, how neat, Dimmer! I grew a plant in those hydroponic pellets back in the 70's and didn't even know they were still around until just recently when I saw a few posts here on DG about them! I will be real curious to hear how your orchid does, growing that way! I might just have to try to find some of those pellets for stuff I grow in water. Usually I just put pebbles in a jar or vase and fill it with water and root cuttings. I do have some Dracaena that has been growing in water for 5 or 6 years ..... and I've always grown Arrowhead Vine in water.
Here's a photo of the bottom two shelves of one of my plant stands - you can see I like growing in glass containers! I took the lids and plastic wrap off so you can see the plants!
Lin, those are just LOVELY.
Do tell me, how did you get the plants in that bottle on the left? How cool is that?
I'm sitting at work thinking about all the Prego jars I throw out on a weekly basis and my head is racing *lol*
Can't wait to do groceries all of a sudden *lol*
Those are so neat Lin and they look so happy :)
Lin
Are you growing an Episcia in water? Just wondering how it will work?
Dimmer
Kimskreations/Kim: LOL .... I see a grocery trip on your list! Just be sure the mouth of any jar is wide enough that when the plant grows you can get in to groom and water, etc. I cheated with that huge jug. My husband had a hole cut in the back for me, to make it easier to plant up! It's a 5gal water jug from back in the mid 70's. That's how they bottled water back then ... now it's all in plastic! I originally had two of these and one got broken many years ago. This thing is so heavy even without rocks, soil and plants! I take it apart every few years and replant it. It's needing a good cleaning out and replanting but it will have to wait until spring!
Dimmer/Kim: Nope, I've never tried an Episcia in water! I wonder how that would work, if it would rot? I might just have to try it and see!
Oh Jan: That is a very pretty mixture! What is that Episcia right in the middle with those beautiful colors?
Hi there Lin,Thats E.Unpredictable Valley.
I put a small stolen down to root for you the last time I posted a picture of it.By spring it will be big enough to send to you:)
Oh S. Mackenzie is really nice! Does that one get huge? I know some of them get pretty large just like some of the Strep's. I'm trying to steer clear of really huge plants! What color are the flowers on Mackenzie? I can't wait to see a pic of that one in bloom!
Here's a glass container with E. Strawberry Patch and a Noid.
Woo Hoo .... Now I am Excited! Oh Jan, Thank You so much! I just love the colors in that foliage! I can't wait for Spring Trading to begin!
Ok, I should be embarrassed to show this photo. I planted an AV in this vase a long time ago and the poor thing is not doing well at all. I wonder why? NO ROOM!! I think this is Optimara 'Annabelle' but I'm not certain. I need to get it out of there!
I am TRULY loving all the photos on this thread! What a GREAT thread this is turning into. LOTS of fun!
I LOVE that Strawberry Patch Lin :) VERY pretty coloring.
I can't wait for spring either. I won't have alot to trade but I'm hoping you all need some outside perennials too *lol*. I just started some Coneflower seeds this past weekend and will be winter sowing this year also so I'm sure I will find SOMETHING people "need" *lol*
I am totally amazed with all the pictures of everyone's babies, they are all SO beautiful and look so happy :)
I LOVE this group.....
Very nice Dimmer! I LOVE that glass jar! I've never been able to keep a Maranta/Prayer Plant alive. Maybe I should try one in a terrarium!
KimK: Yes, we do have a wonderful group here in this garden!
I love the pics of all of your terrariums!! They are so nice, Im gonna give it a shot.
But I have 1 question, What happened to Gessiegail? She was the first person I met on DG and she was so nice!!!
*giggles*.....*giggles*.....*giggles*..... :)
Kelboindy: Gessiegail is taking some time off .... busy, busy right now.
Thanks to Dave for giving me a second chance, I am really here! I love all the pics and have read the whole thread.
I won't be posting for awhile as I have too much 'catching up' to do.
Thanks for all these wonderful posts...You all are inspiring me to get caught up.
Hello, Kelboindy! So glad you are posting on the av forum.
I must show you a new bloom (not from the gesneriads, but one that either Kelboindy, Ardesia or Susan51 sent to me in a trade) on my first brugs in my life. Someone sent me three of them. They battled the winds down here but now they are happy on the front porch with poly wrapped around the porch. Also, one of these three people also sent me plumerias and they are getting leaves on them.
Chat with you all later this week or maybe next week.
Yayyy---Gail's back!!!!
Bug huggs Gail!!
threegardeners,
Thanks and i want you to know that the email address you gave to Lin i couldn't get to work. It kept coming back to me. I tried .com and .ca and neither worked.......
off to the post office and errands
Hi there girlfriend,glad your back!
