DAILY PICS VOL. 34

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

I was only about 6 feet from them, they must be used to me now or they just couldn't see me!

Jane ~ I'm always thinking our birds are plain and drab too, but yours are unique to me so I love seeing them! I think the Cactus Wren and the 2 different Quail are so cool!

Nice pic Nanny, the Nuthatches are one of my favorite visitors.

Wallaby ~ I get a lot of pics like that too, especially if I'm wanting to take them when I get home from work. If there are any clouds at all, I can forget it!

Thanks debnes, I'm so glad you all liked the MB picture!! I'm waiting for him/her to find my peanut butter mixture and the oranges. Last winter I had to put those 2 things on one pole and move it away from the other feeders because they guarded it so much. Maybe it's a different bird and isn't aware of those goodies yet.

Thanks Sadie_Mae!

I read in one of my bird books that the Gambel's and Scaled Quails will sometimes crossbreed. I also wondered about which features would dominate in the offspring.

This morning, this unusual looking quail showed up. He only stayed a few second; but I managed to get a picture of him. His chest feathers are scaled. He has a topknot and face markings similar to a male Gambel's quail; but not quite as pronounced. He also has the Gambel's graduated colors (gray, white, brown) on his chest and wings.

I think he must be a hybrid; but if anybody knows differently, please let me know.

Wow, I can't believe 2 daily threads have gone by since posting!! I really enjoyed browsing through all those pictures I have missed since the holidays hit. I was off today and decided to spend the day outside doing more garden cleanup with my camera and tripod handy. My little red breasted nuthatch friend is the bravest of the yard birds! He doesn't let my presence stand in the way of his foraging at all!

I saw what I think must be a female along with him today.

Thumbnail by lilyfantn
Kingsport, TN(Zone 6b)

they had a grand time "nyuk nyukking" around the feeders.

I'm not sure if they stay together as a pair through the winter. I have seen more than one male at a time at the feeders so I guess this could be a little winter band of males and females.

One thing for sure - they just LOVE my river birches. They love poking around all the flaps of scraggly bark that hang off the trunks. I just may have to plant more trees that have peeling bark. I think there is a nice cherry that has bark that peels off.

These are like "where's waldos"... you have to look closely to find the nuthatch enjoying a frolic in the bark lol.

Very nice pics Lily!

I've never seen a female here.

Kingsport, TN(Zone 6b)

Here is a closer look of a nuthatch poking his beak into a bark flap. I don't know if they are looking for bugs of hiding seeds. It does seem like they often fly to the tree from the feeder.

I had never seen one either and I'm just assuming that's what it is.

The goldies were hanging around too, second best on the bravery scale. The preferred waiting for me to walk away before dropping to the feeders.

My first try at the Jays. We get lots of Blue Jays here and they are not the bullies I have always heard about. Ours are very skittish actually.

Very nice pics Nanny and Lily!

Nanny I don't think their such bullies its just that their size scares alot of other birds away. Their actually quite the great policemen of the Bird World. :-)

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Great pics Lily! I've been looking for the RB Nuthatches here but so far, only have the WB, I just love those little guys/girls!

Very nice Junco and Blue Jay, Nanny! Our Blue Jays are very skittish too, it seems like they'll fly away if I even breath too hard.

Western Scrub Jays are bullies.

resin ..........thanks for the I.D. This bird was quite a bit larger than the other R.T.s I've seen in the past and it looked like it had a gold hood so I wasn't sure. I thought it might be a very light colored Golden.

sadie,

Love the Mockingbird pic! Great shot! Where did you get St. Francis? Is he concrete?

I've only seen one White Crown Sparrow here this Fall, so far. Didn't get a pic of him/her, but thanks for sharing yours! Great pic!

That little Dee maybe a piglet, but he's an adorable piglet! I'm always very happy to see and here the Dee's! ;-)

This morning we woke up to snow flurries and a flock of evening grosbeaks. Their colors are so beautiful but they can really look fierce. Here are a few shots. The first is a male and female together.

I really hope they stay for the winter. They must have come from way north if they think this is south! Here are 2 female and a male.

Marilyn ~ I believe St. Francis came from either Walmart or Lowe's, it's resin, and pretty light but doesn't blow over. I wanted a big one but this was the only one I could find around here.

Nice pics Adel & Bebop! I'd sure love to see some of those Evening Grosbeaks around here!

I just hate that it's so dark when I get home that I can't take any pics. These are from this past weekend

Dark Eyed Junco, all puffed up from the cold

I thought this one was funny, this Downy looks like a torpedo. He was getting ready to head for one of the other feeders.
