Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Hi folks, were we go on #34

Thanks Pelle, for asking me to start this one :-)

Here's where we came from http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/792270/

This is the only White Crowned Sparrow I've seen this year.

Outstanding pics sadie!!!

Love the WC Sparrow and WOW to the Mocker St. Francis pic!!!

Thanks for starting the new thread!

Marlton, NJ

I think they hold those black feathers year round; don't they?

Nice pic Mrs Ed!

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Nice photo Mrs. Ed! Ours have the black feathers year round but the bright yellow turns that muddy yellow looking color on the males.

I've got one at home I've been meaning to post. I think this particular Goldie is missing something in the back, it's feathers don't come together and there's always a white strip of underlying feathers showing. I'll try to post it tonight and see what ya'll think. It's seems to get around ok and eats good so I don't guess it's hurting it any.

Thanks Pelle, actually the St. Francis figure is holding a little bowl and it had rain water in it, the Mocker was swallowing his water but I thought it made for a cute pic :-)

Lesser Goldfinch with black feathers. Pic taken this morning.

Your Lesser Goldfinch are still nice and yellow, do they retain that color all year? Is sure does look like that sparrow is banded. I wonder if some of all species get banded or just specific ones, I'll have to keep an eye out here.

sadie-mae..........I just started bird watching this spring so I'm not sure if they stay yellow all winter. A friend of mine who lives 7 miles from me says his finch are all real drab.

Your Mockingbird pic was a great chance catch sadie, photo competition entry next year!

This Great Tit I got on the last lot I did 3 days ago, it was in the Robins tree soon after he left and seemed to be posing for me too!

Here it's peeking at me.

I took many pics as it checked me out, he kept looking down and when he left another Great Tit flew after him.

Hello.

Dinu, you mentioned how difficult it can be to get pics when birds are behind twigs. This camera can pick them out well unless the lighting is poor. It went further back to preen it's feathers.

sadie mae,
That IS a great picture of the Mockingbird with St Francis!! You should submit that to somewhere. Maybe your local paper.Incidently, what does that sign in the picture say? It looks like "Christmas Is." Were you there?

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Adel ~ maybe yous will stay pretty all winter!

Wallaby1 ~ thank for your comment on the Mockingbird. Now I'll just have to check and see if I saved the original or copied over it when I cropped it...
I just love your pics of the Great Tit, so colorful and nicely done! My camera does ok with the small twigs and sometimes not, always happy when they turn out good like yours.

jws ~ thanks :-) The sign is a daylily marker, my other obsession (the daylilies not the markers, LOL) and it does say "Christmas Is". It's supposed to be a beautiful bright red bloom but it hasn't bloomed in 2 years, I think it needs to be moved to a better spot.

Marlton, NJ

Very nice pics wallaby, I love the Great Tit!

Oh sadie I know "Christmas Is" daylilie; its a beauty!

I'm sure it will bloom if you move it to a more sunny spot or where it likes the soil better.

Beautiful pics, Wallaby!

Great photos!

Well thank you, I'm all fluffed and puffed. This one has a small twig across it's beak and head but the camera went through it. The conditions were perfect and all I had to do was crop these.

Great photos everyone .........

Saturday was quite windy here so bird activity was minimal. However, the wind blew in a very unique bird ---- a leucistic European Starling. This is only the second albino or leucistic bird that I have ever seen. A few year ago I had a Junco visit my bird feeder for several days. I took several photos of the Starling high up in the tree but 80% of the photos were rear-end shots. But, here are two photos ......

And, here is a photo of the Dark-eyed Junco for those who may have missed it.

Those certainly are unique, the Junco is beautiful!

Here's a photo of the Goldfinch I was talking about in my earlier post.
Do you all think it has some of it's feathers missing or is it just holding it's wings differently? I've seen it several times and you can always see that strip of feathers showing down the center of it's back.

I'll have to look through some of my photos.

Very different birds Charlie; I love the Junco!

Beautiful pictures everyone.

I get so jealous seeing all of the colorful birds everyone has. Most of the birds I have are pretty drab colored. Today turned out to be a great day for bird watching. It started out with a visit from this very red little house finch.

Next, my cactus wren came for a visit; and I actually got a pretty sharp shot of him.

I've got hundreds of white-winged doves; so it was a pleasure to see this mourning dove for a change.

Oh WOW! My scaled quail came for lunch; and she invited a friend to join her.

A few minutes later, another pair of scaled quail showed up.

Before long, the white-winged pigs showed up. But wait ... there must be about 8 or 9 scaled quail too. Look at all of them right near the pole.

Last, but not least, the day just wouldn't be complete without my Gambel's Quail showing up.

Beautiful shots Jane!

The Cactus Wren shot is very sharp!

Not bad for a first try nanny, we will be seeing lots of great pics before long I think!

Those quails will eat you out of house and home Jane, they do blend in well with their surroundings.

So, when the skies are so dark you can't get a decent shot if your life depended on it, what does one do? You take the nearest thing to you (sparrows), lighten it with 'D' lighting (still don't know what the D is for!) and call it art!
