Newbie would love some Hoya cuttings/seeds

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Hi all, been looking at your pics and they are just lovely! I was wondering if anyone would be interested in helping out a newbie for postage? I would be very appreciative if anyone was willing to help me out! Misty

Hi Misty!!! By the spring I hope to have some to share!!! If I understand it right it's too cold for them to ship right now. Dmail me then and I'll get you some.

Hi Jeri! That would be just awesome! I just hope I can remember it by then! :) I don't know how "hardy" they are, but I received a Japanese Red Maple yesterday and it looked beautimus! And another dear DGer sent me a whole bunch of stuff recently that survived the trip, I was amazed! But, I got another in the mail today that didn't fair quite as well, so who knows? I will try to remember to Dmail you in the Spring.
Thanks a million!

Hoyas can't dip below 50 degrees. They are like succulents and turn to mush!!! This is my 1st year with hoyas myself. I'll try to root you some so you'll be that much further along in the spring.

Kinda sounds like my begonias, although I still have some thriving in a small green house I bought at Lowe's! Just as pretty as they ever were, believe it or not. :) The ones planted in the ground turned to much first frost. I just can't get over how many beautiful flowers and plants exist in this world! Some rooted cuttings would be just awesome!
Thanks,
Misty

MG...while you are waiting for Jeri to send you some hoyas...you might peruse the threads and do a bit of research on Hoya. They are their own 'plant'...specific needs and growing patterns...will save you alot of heartache to learn more about them.

I'd suggest you just keep your eyes open every time you are at a plant store. I just found a hoya nummawhatchamajiggy today at Lowes. So far, all of my hoyas have come from Lowes in either a basket or 4" pot. I've only ever gotten one cutting to root for me. I can usually get them to start rooting, and then they just keel over dead.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

A hoya nummawhatchamajiggy! I love it! :) I am at Lowe's quite often and haven't been lucky enough to come across one. I will have to ask them when they will be getting them in, cause with our Lowe's you have to buy the plants as soon as they get in because they are so short staffed that nothing is taken care of correctly. BUT, this is when you get bargains like Orchids for $2.50 a piece! :)

Fuquay-Varina, NC(Zone 7a)

they probably won't be ordering any tropicals since they are filling the store with xmas stuff. I'd try asking whoever is in charge of ordering for the nursery to order some hoyas in the mix. You might even try mentioning this to the store manager. = ) When tropicals do come in, search through the little 4" trays......I've found compacta, krimson princess, and krimson queen in there.

Darn, means I will probably be waiting for Spring to arrive then. :( When I first started gardening last year it was all annuals, which I love several of them, but this year we started with perennials. THEN, I came here, now look at me! LOL

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

Tammy that is exactly what happened to me!!! Now after a year I have around 75 and the list grows faster than the pocket book can accommodate!!!! LOL!!!

UHHO, I am in trouble then! LOL

Great! You will never be bored once you fall in love with plants! I am new to hoyas but would like to play with rooting mine. I will give it a try and send you some if they root well. Just add me to your dmail list to remind me next year. : )
I have found some at Lowes too!

Love it ... I hope you will you post it over on the AV forum too!

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

headed there now! :)

Alamogordo, NM(Zone 7b)

Cute poem, what does AV stand for? There are so many forums here I can't keep up! ; )

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

thanks! african violet. :)

Alamogordo, NM(Zone 7b)

Duh, should have figured that one out. I used to have a whole window of AV's but don't have the light here I had at the old house. So I only have one, it is blooming now. I even rooted some myself that bloomed their heads off. Ages ago though.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

LOL I have 5 now I think. :) I have a leaf I just stuck in the dirt that is still kickin!

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Lookin at more pics and still wishing for some seeds! :)

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

With seeds you have to wait a LONG time and then you have tons of a ??? Better with cuttings.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

I will try to be patient then. :)

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

If you are growing seeds...please don't pass them out (the plants) with a new name or what you would like them to be. PLEASE pass them out as 'seedlings'...this is so important!!!!

Carol

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Hi Carol, I don't have any seeds either, so no worries! :) I am not quite sure what you mean, but is it because it is a new hybrid with new seedlings, or because you are unsure what seeds you had to start the plant? I am a newbie to gardening, so I am still in the "learning" stage, and probably be there a LONG time! LOL

Thanks,
Tammy

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Got me one for half off at Lowe's today! WEEEEEEE HAAAAAAAA

Alamogordo, NM(Zone 7b)

Great! So what did you get? Did it have a tag?

(Zone 1)

Allright, Misty! Can you post a picture of your new baby? Would love to see it! Did it have a label on it with a name?

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

It didn't come with the label, but I will attach the pic and the link to witch one it is. :)

I think our Lowes has had those on the trellis too. Both our Lowes & HD have plants that are beautiful upon arrival from the nurseries but they go down hill pretty fast since they don't have anyone taking proper care of them. I have seen some plants that are just floating in water and others dry and crispy in a matter of a couple of weeks - and they are still asking the same price!

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

I have seen the same thing at our Lowe's, it is horrible to see that! Barb, our horticulturist, always seems to know when Shaun is around and asked if we needed another Christmas Cactus, half off, and of course I just HAD to have one! So I asked her if they had any Hoya's and she took me to them and I asked if she was gonna give me a deal on those! She said they aren't on clearance yet, but she said you can have this one for half off! I was tickled pink. Now I gotta find a larger pot to get it in and give it some TLC! :)

(Zone 1)

Misty: I think most hoya's like tighter roots so I don't think you should move it up to a larger pot, but I don't have many Hoyas so maybe some of the pro's on this forum could give you some better advice about that.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Hopefully someone will come along and let me know to re pot it or not then. :)

Fuquay-Varina, NC(Zone 7a)

hoyas like tight shoes

the ubergardeners might encourage you to unpot your new find, remove the soil, and replace with new soil.

all this stuff completely depends on your watering style, your humidity and light.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

The soil does look pretty poor, so I thought I might at least re pot it in new soil, but use the same pot it is in?

Fuquay-Varina, NC(Zone 7a)

yup
or at least the same size
