Release these 2 Monarchs today, but placed them on the Hatsu Arashi blooms first before they flew away! :-)

looks like photos of Kurumsibori that I've seen!

This photo

should win a photo contest!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks Beth!

I appreciate the "possible" ID on the one you think could be Kurumsibori. Cool!

I don't know about a photo contest, but the butterfly photo took my breath away when I uploaded it to the computer. I knew the Monarchs (or any butterflies for that matter) would look awesome against the deep blue Hatsu Arashi blooms. But it turned out far better than I was expecting. That's one of the neat things about raising and releasing butterflies ... they can be staged if they aren't to anxious to fly away after emerging from their chrysalis. :-)

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

OMG Becky - that picture is FANTASTIC! And doubly cool because they were butterflies you raised. You rock girl!

ROFL!!! Love the "Chocolate Chip" name idea, Ronnie! LOL! It actually looks like chocolate CHUNK to me! All melted and googy! LOL! Can ya tell I need some chocolate RIGHT NOW!!! :-D

Thanks Joanne! I have been raising and releasing butterflies for 3 years now. Most of my garden beds are host and nectar plants for Butterflies and Hummingbirds! Which is why I love red blooms so much! My yard went from looking barren to looking a bit like a maintained jungle. So much nicer now! :-) More work, but always a labor of love! It's taken my family until now to start appreciating it. They thought I had literally lost my mind when I started adding garden bed after garden bed. I have a neighbor who gets up on a ladder to peer over my privacy fence to see how my garden beds are doing. I have invited her over to look several times, but she must enjoy it a LOT to be peeking from time to time. She says she doesn't want to bother me! LOL! She has a pool in her yard and a large house with little room for plants or garden beds, so she gets her fix by peeking at my gardens. Ironically ... she doesn't swim. She's afraid of the water. If it were me ... I'd either sell the house or fill in the pool! LOL!

Thanks, Sandy, Jackie, and Ronnie!

Can someone post or d-mail me the link of the photo contest y'all are talking about. The DG contest is over. Is there another contest? I would love to submit my photo to promote butterflies and morning glories! :-) I enjoy sparking people's interest in the creatures and plants that I love! :-)

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Becky no more contest until next year!!! Save those pictures!!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks, Ronnie! Congrats on having one of your photos win 1st place! Is your beautiful photo of roses or begonias or another plant? Just amazing your photographic eye! Another friend here on DG won two different 1st places also. She submitted the photo of the scotty walking along the bridge and I think the one of the butterfly. :-)

So where does the profit of the calendar sales go? Anyone know?

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Wow Becky! That butterfly picture is a Winner for 2008. You got my vote on that one!!!

luvsgrtdanes, I voted for your roses. It was as if nature had arranged itself in a orderly yet artistic way just for you that day! I almost fell out of my chair when I saw I made runner up!!! Now, I`m inspired to try and practice more with my camera settings like X was showing us here earlier.

It is warming up here thank goodness! It is spring like weather and a day to run around and get some things done so I can enjoy my Sunday off.

I got a few pictures this morning but I think it will take more than one warm day to bring these babies out of their slumber. The purpureas are jumping to the chance to bloom while I`m noticing shut down of growth on the nils. The nils are definitely sulking about the cooler nights we have been having. I do see some buds on the nils and hopefully they were able to form normally and I`ll get a few more pictures before it`s all over.

Maybe later we could start a thread on the last recorded blooms of 2007? The picture and approximate date if not exact date. That would be fun. :)

Thanks for the vote Karen!! I loved your photo!!

Becky mine was in Roses a pink rambler that set the scene itself one misty morning!!

Our weather here is not too bad, at least the sun is shining!! Not quite as warm as Florida or Louisiana!!

Becky.. Great photo
Andthe Hatsu Arashi has such a grand color.. do you have anyseeds you might trade away..
Idon't know what you might like...but I bet your butterflies might love this baby.. it has so many flowers open together...I've just received seeds of across between these two similar flowers...take a look.. I'd also consider trading seeds from others..having similar dark blue or light blue ruffled flowers... Karen...pleasealso take note...I'dlove the lightbluedouble Kikyo ..the picture in the opening post here..single/double.. it's the color and ruffles that has me..
Please check out the cross I have... from the Canary Islands native...

Gordonhawk,

That picture of the blue double kikyo is a chance occurance in a growout. I checked for seeds and nada on the seeds. :(

I will just have to keep trying.

Karen...well.. maybe we'lll get to find another one like the first one.. from the same person responcible for this one.. { Praying!!!!! } Thanks...
Gordon

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

I`m that person responsible. I crossed a ukigumo with a kikyo(both parent plants came from Komeri on ebay) and got a round blizzard flower. The F2 seeds from this was what I grew out.

Here is another result of that very same grow out. This one got the leaf color, round flower and variegation from the ukigumo and the color of the flower came from the kikyo.

Hi Gordon - We will have to see if this vine produces any seeds. If it does, I would be more than glad to trade you for some seeds! Maybe by the end of this month I will have some seeds. Maybe. Right now I don't see any pollinated pods forming. Maybe I need to pollinate some of the blooms myself. (Probably.) Just d-mail me to remind me that you are interested! :-)

Karen - You've certainly gotten some interesting blooms from your ukigumo and kikyo cross! Such fun to see what we can create by crossing different cultivars!

This is purpurea shibori mix from December 3.

Fantastic blooms everyone... the ones I brought inside quit blooming so all I have are leaves and seedpods at the moment. Once in awhile Acapulco Blue blooms.

Becky, one of your unknowns up there looks like Star of India posted on 11/30 4:42 pm, the one above it is gorgeous too. You've got alot of Stars..!! nice growing there.

Ronnie, congratulations on that photo.. looks fantastic.

Karen that last one you posted looks so bright and cheery.

The speckled ones are nice also..

Well, if I don't post too much, that is because we are getting ready for the company we are expecting... Happy Holidays everyone.

Magnusiana The tiny 1/2-1 inch flower
has a colored stigma which I couldn't capture.
I doubt if I will grow this one again, just too small.
The leaves are nice though. I have a few seeds if anyone
wants to add it to their collection.

Here are seed pods protected in the small nets a DG member sent me. I don't know if I should say the person's name because they might get clobbered with requests for them....but they probably would be easy to make.

Stictocardia beraviensis blooming. Not pretty blooms since I've mis-treated
her something awful. She's root bound and needs a larger pot. In a 10
gallon or larger now, what a thug. LOL

Thumbnail by patootie
Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Thanks for posting the picture patootie; the blooms are pretty! I have seeds for that and had no idea what it looked like.

Joanne

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

She's in a 10-gallon pot, and needs a bigger one? Wow! How old is she?

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

She's only 3 yrs old. She grew huge the 1st summer I grew her. I cut her all the
way back last fall, 06. She put out new growth this spring and summer but I
never did pot her up and that's what she wanted. Got some kind of bug
after her. I've given her some
Bayer 2 in one, fertilizer and systemic.
That 1st summer, she had 4 stems each growing as much as 10-20 feet. Good Grief. LOL Very impressive with some lvs over a foot tall and 10 inches across.
The bamboo (bent) trellis's couldn't support the stems.
Nothing timid about this vine.
