am ordering my first lillies--what color combinations do you like best?

Poland, ME

Near black, pink and white!

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Any and all combinations. I never met a lily (hosta, peony, daylily) that I didn't like. :) Ok, maybe there was a daylily or two, but... :)

Denham Springs, LA(Zone 8b)

I agree with Ticker. Blue being my favorite. I buy just about every lily, iris and daylily that I can get my hands on.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I have to agree with mainiac, that color combo is very outstanding. But then, if you just plain love lilies, you'll think any combo is gorgeous, like me. I like the fragrant ones and planting them in a place you pass often, near the house is a must.

Does that help?

Plano, TX

which are the fragrant ones?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Oriental are the most fragrant

Plano, TX

thanks!

Denham Springs, LA(Zone 8b)

I need to check out Orange Crush. Never heard of that one.

planolinda, just buy and plant as many as you can they are all beautiful!!

I think I need Anaconda too.......

Denham Springs, LA(Zone 8b)

I found most of these at the website listed below. I found several reference to them online about how great this company was, even thought the prices are a little high. The first two I want are named Elise, which happens to be my daughters name and Midnight, which is the name of my cocker spaniel that I had when I was growing up. Then after I save and save some more, I want Miss Libby.

i am ordering from the co op on dave's garden--bleeks is the company

Denham Springs, LA(Zone 8b)

Ok, I've heard of Bleeks. But I sure can't find a link. Would you happen to have the link?

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Ladysaltfire,
You will get very special lilies from the Lily Garden. It's pretty neat to be able to get them directly from the hybridizer. I'm happy with the ones I've gotten from LG.
However, the prices in the Bleek/4paws co-op are fabulous and there are some good must-have lilies included.
In the first post is a link to the webpage of the Glads and Lilies being offered in the co-op. I was in the daffodil one with the same company and got very nice bulbs.

Here's the co-op thread
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/792169/

I think that there's another lily co-op as well, here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/784499/#new

Fwiw, I'm kind of a lily newbie and am always teetering between budget and desire, so I tend to shop for price on the more familiar varieties (Stargazer, CasaBlanca, Sorbonne) to give me more budget room for the "delicious" ones like Elise or Midsummer's Eve.

Plano, TX

i also could not find bleeks in the garden watch--but several of the co op people have ordered before from them and liked what they got---this is my first time --excellent prices and fun pictures to choose from!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

His "regular" companies are eflowergarden and Touch of Nature, which I think is in the top 30 :)

Plano, TX

thanks --i will look them up

Denham Springs, LA(Zone 8b)

Ooh.. Pretty and excellant prices. Thank you.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

I like purple and pink and white - but I have to also say I love yellow lilies...especially yellow OT's!!!!

Plano, TX

the pink, purple and white would be pretty--what are OT"s?

Poland, ME

OT's are Oriental Trumpet hybrids. These type of lilies are not normally created by nature but by embryo rescue culturing. They have the fragrance of Orientals and tall strong stems (usually) like trumpets. These crosses generally produce stronger stems, uniques colorations, and long life bulb. Orientals seem to die out in a few years for most people. OTs just seem to get better and better... (my personal experience)

Plano, TX

oh my--do you do the culturing?

Poland, ME

No, that's pretty a pretty specialized technique. I think a few amateurs might try it, but I am not one of them.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Plano,

I agree with Mainiac on the "better and better". OT's are also a good choice in our climate because of the heat tolerance. You'll find most Orientals burn and the leaves brown and they're not good long-term performers. Most of the Oriental/Trumpet hybrids take it in stride and the stems are green until near frost. They get bigger and more prolific each year. Here are some of my "Silk Road" OT's - I grew these for about 3 years at my last house and transplanted them to our new place last fall. They were about 3 ft tall first year at the old place - and 7 ft when I pulled them...and still got to 6 and a half feet first year here! I think you really should give them a try.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

YES Mainiac - I love all the OT's but still haven't found one that performs like this one does! And what a scent it has too!!!

Plano, TX
