want to make and seel root cuttings

Danville, VA(Zone 7b)

has anybody checked out the package that Mike McGroaty has on makeing and selling to wholesale gardening businesses. I believe he wants closs to 300.00 bucks for the kit, that is suposed to give the ins and outs on getting started. There is a money back policy. It also gives you a list of companies to buy and sell to, what to say on the phone so they won't hang up on ya.etc. Just thinking of some ways to try making a little extra cash. thanks Mike

Hi Mike,

I did buy his Book "Easy Plant Propagation" and received information related the wholesale garden business.

I hesitated to shell out 300 bucks on the kit because it just didn't fit into my budget and I wasn't sure if it would be something that I could handle alone. I probably would do it as a joint venture if a neighbor dediced to go in on it.

Let me know what you think of it if you decide to go thru with it.

Good luck.

rb250,

Virginia has a great horticultural extension service and a very active Master Gardeners program. You can get all the information you need about propagating perennial plants of all sorts by Googling the various state extension services and by contacting your local Master Gardeners groups.

As far as selling the cuttings you pot up, many newspapers have a special section in the want ads featuring farm and garden products for sale by individuals and I always see lots of produce and bedding plants advertised in season. You might also stimulate some sales by posting a color flyer of your products on bulletin boards in grocery stores and other such places around your community at the appropriate seasonal times. Once you establish a good word-of-mouth reputation, I surmise you'll have all the biz you want.

I'm not trying to knock Mike McGroaty, I get his email newsletter, but he's a great marketer and is just trying to expand on that with his 300.00 offer. If someone feels the need to have his consultation ... fine. But ask yourself ... what did folks do to start their bedding plant and perennial cutting home-based businesses before they had Mike to advise them?

Thanks Penny. Your common sense took some of the mystery out of the whole project. As always, doing all the foot work and grunt work oneself, eliminates much of the cost.

Teri,

I should've included that Pennsylvania also has a great extension service as does Indiana (Purdue). Cornell also has some great extension info to Google.

Penny,

Thanks for all your help.

I will look into the extension services here in Pennsylvania where I am a new resident. It is snowing today which reminds me of how much free time I will have while there is not much to do outside for the next few months.
