DG in the spotlight again!

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Received the Nov/Dec issue yesterday of The American Gardener (American Horticultural Society's magazine) and guess who's in it? The website is password protected http://ahs.org/publications/the_american_gardener/index.htm but I tried to convert the document so everyone could read it.

Gardeners, pause amidst your toil
To hail our Dave, computer giant.
His site gives facts on plants and soil,
Makes us all more self-reliant.
Adding features every week,
No forum task too large or small. So
Thanks for giving us a peek,
We didn't know he's handsome also!

(Zone 1)

Very cute Don! Both the poem and Dave!

(Zone 1)

rcn48/Debbie: I got the e-mail with the attachment! Thank you so much!

This site has more talent than any that I know...Thanks for the poem! Jo

(Zone 1)

I agree Roadrunner! A lot of intelligent, talented folks here in this garden ... always willing to share and help with advice, seeds, plants, photo's, and even newspaper and magazine articles! DG .... a Garden of Family & Friends!

I Love this Garden!

Dolores, CO(Zone 5b)

Great article, and I love the poem! Way to go, Dave! Thanks for creating DG!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Had the opportunity to actually meet and visit with Dave at the Arlington RU in October. Most unassuming, down to earth person I have ever met. He would be an instant friend even without knowing the background. More exciting to me than had I met one of the so-called "world leaders". Guess it would accurate to say that for now, Dave Whitinger is leading my world as a friend and gardener. DG has enhanced my life tremendously. Thank you very much for posting the article and giving more insight into "our Dave".

How nice to meet Dave. Thanks for posting.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Ha - received my issue two days ago and didn't open it yet! Thanks Debbie!

Lavina, congrats on the retirement! Dave didn't found Linux, but a website called Linux Today which covered the Linux world.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Linus Torvalds founded the linux kernel, I believe.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - hence the name. He's the linux kernal Colonel.

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Victor!!! Honestly, you wit never ceases to amaze me. LOL

Exactly what usually happens to me - could be months before I get around to reading it - with all my recent "organization" was thrilled this was one time I had an opportunity to read it upon arrival. I was so excited to see the article, and a two page spread at that - couldn't wait to share it with everyone and glad you enjoyed it. I'd be happy to send the original article to anyone else who wants it - just dmail me :)

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Every small nursery I go to I mention DG to the proprietors. This would be an excellent article to hand them!
If this prints out nicely, I too would love a copy.

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Sue, send me your email address and I'll forward it as an attachment so you can print it out.

Scottsdale, AZ(Zone 9b)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thank you Debbie. I suggest people email the AHS and commend them for the article. Maybe at the same time you can request a print copy of it!

Wonderful Article, Dave!

I believe we are all privileged to be part of this great community.

Congrats on the recognition for a job well done, Dave!

Great article!

BUT! (and I think that Dave would want this known) Contrary to what someone said above:

Dave didn't found Linux. Pretty much that rests on the shoulders of Linus Torvalds. Dave actually started Linux Today several years after Linux started and was a boy genius for doing that.

Dave was 15 when Linux was born.

Just saying and as Fan of Dave's, I don't think he would mind me pointing this out while he is put of town.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Daisy - we did point that out a few posts up! Wonder how old was Dave when Linus from Peanuts was born??

Port Vincent, LA(Zone 8b)

I am so grateful for this awesome website. What a blessing to be a part of such a wonderful ,talented ,caring family. And Dave, you are to cute to be so smart. :) Thanks for DG. I too tell everyone about it.

This may seem a bit out of reach, but I will present it anyway. And I'm sure there are a million reasons why we can't. But I believe DGer's can do anything. Especially with Dave at the helm. Would it be possible to have a HUGE RU in Tyler Texas. It would be fantastic. I'm sure Dave could get us some Garden Tours together and rent a big hotel with convention rooms and all DG attendee's pay whatever Dave thinks it would take to cover it. We could have sceduled classes taught by DG Master Gardeners or anyone else with the ability to teach. Can you imagine the Hotel when we all show up with our "Daves Garden" T shirts and our garden gloves on. What a wonderful way to meet each other and show off our plants, swap plants and seeds. What a fantastic way to get over the no garden winter blues. Think I'll dmail Dave and start a thread.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10b)

He was -25. I think.

Port Vincent, LA(Zone 8b)

This would also be a great way for us to learn about the different mail order plant companies. We could invite them to set up booths to show us their new 2008 plants and seeds. Bring their literature and catalogs, give out discount coupons. Also vendors with Garden Items and tools. O yaa, it's looking like a long weekend in Texas. Of course we would each have to pay an admission price and our hotel and eats and tours. But, what a great way to spend a get away. February would probably be the best time I think. That will put Christmas far enough behind us and Spring right around the corner. Transportation would probably be the most expensive thing, because the hotels offer convention pricing. But we ladies from the MidSouth could all rent a bus or gather up everyone's RV' and everyone ride together. What a great way to go celebrate Dave's great success with Dave's Garden.

OH MY GOSH! DrapeLady, you are on to something. Mary Kay started as a small, word of mouth company. (I actually had a facial by MK herself) Anyway, this is an idea that has come. The regional RU's are great and I have had a great time just this last October meeting Dave himself. We need to pursue this NOW.

Christi

(just look at how the red hat ladies has taken over)

This is waaaay biggger than that.

Port Vincent, LA(Zone 8b)

Yes. I'm part of DWC(Drapery and Window Coverings) and there are conventions every year. Now that it has grown, they have about 3 a year in different parts of the US. Last year, it was in Washington DC. And thats exactly how they do it. I know it is a large undertaking, but my gosh, what a fabulous way to commend Dave and to meet our extended families. Oh and to drink at the huge fountain of knowledge that would gather there. And to share. I hope Dave sees this. He is young enough, full of life and knowledge. If anybody can do it , I believe he can. I bet Ortho and Miracle Gro and Home Depot and Lowes and alllll the many many rose growers in Texas, would love to have a shot at showing the largest number of gardeners in the world their products. It would be a green function, I can tell you that. :)

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Debbie - thanks for sharing the article with us! Very interesting. Congrats to Dave....he's amazing, and so is his creation!!
