They just won't stop!

Automated ones aren't so bad. It's the ones like I got a few weeks ago. The fire department people calling for money. I tell them that we already donate and before I can even finish my sentence they hang up.

Or like the time I was 11 or something. Some woman called and I cut her short telling her in no uncertain terms that we're not interested and she tells me that I just got my dad fired b/c she's his boss.

Well, being a naive kid I had no idea. So I'm sitting in my room worrying and waiting for my parents to come home. This is before cell phones by the way so I couldn't call them and ask.

I swear... If I some how ever manage to find that woman...

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

I am with you, that is crazy.
I should report these people who call illegally, but, to do that you need to get their name, bussiness, time, etc, and that means talking to them. Isn't that what we are trying to avoid?
The bad ones hang up, if you start asking questions, so what do you do?

If you have caller I.D. and know it's a number you're not familiar with, just lift up the phone and hang it up again. Their systems are automated and they'll still continue to call.

Quoting:
I'm wondering why in the world I should have to give out my social security number to NOT GET JUNK MAIL?

I wonder the same darn thing. I still opted out but asking for the ss# is ridiculous.

Not precisely on topic but do you guys (and gals) get the deluge of catalogs?
I registered with a new site that allows you to opt out of catalogs. Save the earth
and save the postman's back... opt out of all those catalogs you don't want anyway.

I got something from Temper-pedic today...

I don't get a lot of catalogs, for some reason. Maybe b/c I'm not a home owner and I do most of my shopping in locally, on ebay or through companies on here.

I found some good info:

http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/tcpa.html

I put my name on their do not call list.... Again... Maybe it was a whole five years ago since I did this.

And this site:

http://www.dmachoice.org/consumerassistance.html

I'm going to fill out one of their complaint forms against Temper-pedic and send it in as soon as the computer is fixed that the printer is connected to.

I have a friend of mine who gets these calls from the telemarketers and he gets into a conversation with them about the weather and their family life and whatever else he can think of, to keep them tied to the phone for a length of time, it cost them money for each phone call they make and if you tied them up long enough, to where its costing them money they will stop calling. I have done this and it works.
And as far as the Fire dept. and all the other state officials who evers calls here who want you to buy tickets for this or that, I just tell them, a really sob story that will get them to lay off till next year then we start all over again. I have caller id if I don't know the number I don't answer, that works to. The mail stuff, I just burn it after 1 year on the mailing list, They either stop or I get a last chance to comply, still I burn it. I hardly get anything now.

We must have a different breed of telemarketers b/c mine don't stay on the phone very long.

I didn't read the whole thread but I hate junk mail. I love to get the prepaid return envelopes. I take all the other junk mail I receive, remove any personal info, fold it all up and stuff the envelopes as full and heavy as I can and pop them back in the mail. I would love to see the clerks face at the other end when they open the mail and get all my junk mail. LOL

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I like that, never thought of it, I just burn it

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

There is no weight limit on the prepaid envelopes and the companies pay by weight so stuff em full. LOL

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

And guess what. Even after I opted out on their marketing site for Capitol One I'm still getting letters.

I really don't think that they care what you send them even if it does feel good to do it, it doesn't get you anywhere.

I would really like to collect all the ones they send me, put all of them into a huge sack and drop it on the person in charge of marketing's head.

All the junk mail I get goes to the recycling bins at the animal shelter, and the animals get free treats with the money. I know because I used to work there. I have a paper grocery bag that I drop it all in, and when it's about half full (it's heavy!), I take it down there. Makes me feel good! Of course, I mark out all personal info first.

For telemarketers, someone on a different thread suggested this: record the three beeps that play when you reach a disconnected number, and play this when a telemarketer calls. Their computer picks up the tones and recognizes a bad number, so they automatically delete your number from their call list. Here's a recording of it that you can download:

KyWoods, the money? What money? They give you money for donating paper?

Sorry, I think I'm missing something.

We don't have problems so much with telemarketers, just junk mail. Emails are annoying but it doesn't bother me that much.

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

LOL, the money goes to the organization that has the recycling bin.

Its not people you are trying to get to, its the computers that are doing it, and they don't care who's lives they are disrupting. Its like the phone calls most all are auto-mated.

Santa Fe, NM

We have been getting calls from telemarketers who have very heavy Indian accents but introduce themselves as,
" Hello, this is Roger Smith" or "Bob Jones" and so forth. My husband has started asking, "What is your real name?" They always hang up!
