regarding your video on trees and shrubs

Homer, GA

Hi Dave,

Im new to your site so bear with me. I watched your video on planting trees and shrubs and a question occured to me. You said do not put the mulch against the plant. Why!

I use a mixture of red mulch and aged horse manure on all my transplants ,so far with a good deal of success.
am i missing something? The trees and shrubs i work with are leland cyress, tea olive, gardenia's and roses.

great site,congratulations.

You don't want to pile mulch up right to the trunk of the tree/shrub because that can encourage fungal growth. You can definitely mulch the plant, but you should leave a gap between the trunk and the edge of the mulch. Some plants are going to have more problems than others if you pile mulch too close to them, and you won't necessarily have problems every single time you put mulch right up to the trunk, but you're definitely increasing your probability of running into problems if you do it that way.

I'm not Dave...I just knew the answer to your question and figured there was no point in making you wait for him to come along and answer :-)
