growing a leaf !

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Gail. I just found this link on another forum and thought I would share it as well.

http://www.dirtdoctor.com/view_question.php?id=426

I had tried it and killed a plant, and had asked more questions about it with no response in a prior post on a different thread.
I was wondering what you alls thoughts is on this as well. We pitch a lot of old coffee and thought it was worth a shot? We also throw the grounds in our compost.
Thanks again, Tammy

Yeah, I'm finding the DG site to be real SLOW. I have high speed internet but it is taking a long time just to go from one thread to the next!

Regarding plant food. I think anything for flowering plants (higher middle number) would be fine and if you have the Miracle Grow specifically for AV's than it will work. I have Dyna Grow (7-9-5) and Eleanor's VF-11(0.15-0.85-0.55)
and one I got from Gail and I can't remember without going out to look what the formula is on that one. I go back and forth from the different ones. But, I use these plant foods for everything, not just African Violets.

Interesting re: the coffee grounds! I've heard over the years about folks using them around their plants both in their gardens and for house plants. I also read once that coffee grounds won't hurt but they don't have any beneficial use for the plants either .... so? I don't have an answer for this one. Never tried it.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Lin. I was wondering how, or if at all, it might work with some of my other house plants? I bought some different varieties of angel plants and wondered how it would do. I bought what is marked as "Purple Waffle", but they had more than one type of plant that had the same tag? The one I have has fuzzy purple and green leaves, but can't find it in a search for purple waffle. Guess I need to post it on the ID forum to find out for sure what it is. Thanks, Tammy

I might just start trying the old coffee method just to see what results I get.

(Zone 1)

Tammy: Maybe you have this plant, if the leaves are fuzzy purple?

Lin,
Yes that is it. I just found it on their web site. It is so irritating that people do not care enough about their plants to put the correct tags on them! I adore this plant, it is soooooooooo beautiful! I was able to make 2 plants out of one, which tickled me pink since it was a $7.00 "little" plant! I will have to get a pic and send it to you as I put the smaller part in a large glass vase. DH thought it was REALLY pretty! :)

(Zone 1)

Oh, I bet that looks great in the glass vase! Please post a picture here for all to see!

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Lin, I just looked at a LOT of the pics on the link you posted and I realized that I seem to buy all these teeny tiny little plants that are going to turn in to HUGE plants! That, and the ones that were gave to me! Like the kalanchoe. :) Which, by the way, one of the leaves with the little "flower" head was touching the dirt and has now rooted in it! I think, unknowingly, I must love these plants that tend to get so large! LOL

(Zone 1)

Is your Kalanchoe the one called "Mother of Thousands"? That one will grow teeny babies all along the leaves and if those teeny babies drop off and fall on the ground you have thousands of new plants! There is one that is very invasive down here in Florida ... you plant one in the ground and you will have hundreds of thousands!

Lin, that fertilizer I sent you is the 12-36-14 which encourages greatly the number of blooms and the size of blooms on any kind of blooming plant. I use that 3 times in a row and then use a balanced fertilizer now.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Well poo, I got a glare no matter where I sat it to take the pic. This is the best I could do for now.

This is the one you ID's for me, Lin.

Remember, the one I said I would have to buy a HUGE pot for?! LOL

(Zone 1)

Thanks Gail! I couldn't remember and didn't want to go out back to find it. My Florida room and covered deck and pool deck are a mess! I need to do some fall/winter cleaning! I have dirt and leaves and plants and pots and tools and stuff all over the place. Can hardly find a space to sit much less walk around! I was out there fertilizing day before yesterday and left the container out there.

Tammy: I don't remember ID'ing that plant ... nice one though! I am getting so old!

I love the looks of your purple passion plant in that vase! It looks fabulous! I know what you mean though about trying to take a picture of glass .... the flash causes a glare! But, I can see it and I really like that plant in there! I just love planting inside glass containers!

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Lin. It is all your fault, too! LOL Just kidding! You did give me the idea, though. :) I will have to see if I can go back again and find the post for you so you can remember IDing that one. :)

I looked it up earlier cause I forgot the exact name, so I remembered whereabouts it was! :)

(Zone 1)

LOL Tammy! I don't remember things 5 minutes after they happen!

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

LOL! Maybe you should move to zone 6b and give your brain a "cooling off" period! LOL I would even give you starts off all of my pretties, if they were still kicking that is! :) :)

(Zone 1)

Whoa! I bet it's COLD in zone 6b! I'd rather be here where right now it's 64 degrees outside! Although, I've never been to Mo! Isn't that the "Show Me State"??

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Yahoo says it is 46 right now, but I just took the dogs out and it seems much colder with the wind blowing! I can't say as I blame you for wanting to stay where you are! Yes, it is suppose to be the "Show Me State", but I donno what we are suppose to be showing! HA HA HA

Susan,

The AV's you gave me are beautiful! Here's a picture, the one on the left is the baby and it's a little darker than the big one. I couldn't get the camerato capture the actual colors but they are both a darker blue than you see...

I had to post this one as it has been a great bloomer for me, even if it is run of the mill AV!

I just love the purples and blues...especially when it has an edge

*******edited to say 'bummer' Susan about your son. I am so glad they have identified it early enough to treat it with the right antiobiotics. You have had more than your share of worries this year.

Terri,
I feel so bad cause I finally meet someone who is normal and then the ***t hits the fan.... Bagles sound wonderful... Tomorrow is the last of the baby showers for Mandy and then Turkey day so we should be able to get together after that... Or at least I hope...LOL
I am going to do what Gail said and put the styrofoam under my heat mat and then the flowers will get the lamps on the shelf also....
Brenda, I am sorry I did not get to mail out your cuttings yet but will do my best for Monday.... I have plenty so if they don't make it alive this time there is always another time :-)
Hugs to All,
Susan
