growing a leaf !

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

don't forget, Susan, we want pics! (LOL)

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

You are going to get them Gail...LOL I had to eat first...LOL
Ok before I forget I would like to ask how do I get one of my lights not to shut off from heat? I have raised it low then high and it is still to much... I am only using one heat mat and that is for the passion seeds and the leaves... I just may move the light to another stand and then I have more room if I should get others...
Ok all the green leaves that are growing are from Gail... I now have two Chiritas, one strep, and one of the Esisica. I am postive that one AV leaf is going to do well as it is still alive and upright...yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh... I am also going to send a picture of the AV that Lin sent to me and it is blooming... Now I am ready to pass out for this one...LOL NEVER ever did I think I could keep one alive, nor to get one to bloom.... Thanks to all of you I have :-) The rest are passion flower seeds ... I have to read up on how to not let them get leggy... Also do you think I need to keep them in the plastic tray with the lid? I am so afraid to let the leaves leave there trays but one right from the start has been out on its own and is doing great... with the heat mat and the lights I have to water at least every 2-3 day...
Ok enought chatter now pictures...

Susan

I'm having such a blast learning from these ladies and looking at everyone's pictures :) Going to make the winter MUCH happier that's for sure :) Congratulations again!

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

These are from Lin and I think she sent me 7 all total and I gave two of the bigger ones to a Very Nice lady Terri who lives about 1 hour away... At the time I thought I would kill them all so those two had a good home..LOL Now I see I can do it...LOL

Yeah...hip hip hooray for Susan! You are doing great. I take my leaves (once they are rooted well ) out of the dome but I never use a heating mat for anything inside the house???????????

Sometimes I use my 60" heating mats under lights for hibiscus rootings, coleus, etc.......but not for avs. i can see why you would need a heating mat for a passion vine but not avs.......or its' relatives.

congrats!!!!!!!!!

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Ok Gail thank you so much once again..... :-)
Ok this is one of the passion fruit....
Hugs and be back later...

susan I just thought of something........Do you have a piece of styrofoam or something that doesn't conduct heat under your mat? If not, go to Wally World and get a piece of styrofoam and wrap the edges in duct tape so you don't have styrofoam pellets floating through the house. That will solve the problem of heat and should be done anyway with a heating mat.

(Zone 1)

I don't know anything about heating mats ..... have never used them. I am such a scardy cat with stuff like that ... I worry about fire. I have even been leery of the lights on the plant stands ... worried that they might short out from being on so many hours, and cause a fire! I guess you could call me a little paranoid sometimes! LOL. Now, I'm assuming the heat mats don't generate a lot of heat? I am thinking along the lines of a heating pad which gets pretty hot. I would be afraid it would heat up the styrofoam and cause a fire! :) Don't mind me ... I am a fraidy cat sometimes.

Gail: I must Thank You for all of your knowledge about propagating!! I had no idea that so many plants could be grown from just a leaf! I knew about growing AV's from a leaf, my dear Mother in Law taught me that back in 1969 and I had a hoya leaf root and a pepperomia leaf years ago, but I had no idea you could root begonia leaves or the ZZ plant!! I gotta try rooting some of my zz leaves and maybe a begonia or two!

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Thanks for the info Gail... Sounds good to me... I will get it on Friday...
Lin the lights are on a timer and like yesterday and today when the heat rose from the mat it turns itself off... I would never run anything without watching...LOL Plus my Mother in Law lives here and she is home all day when I work...
Tomorrow when I come home from work I will take the leaves that are growing and put them on the stand with just the lights no heat or dome... I am thinking the same for the passion seeds... I am thinking of putting them on a box so they don't get to leggy and can be closer to the lights... I was told when plant is leggy it is trying to get to the light...
I know this is stupid Lin but I did not know how to do any propergation except putting in water.. Now I know better and I took a coleus leaf and grew that... Now that was a proud day for me also...LOLOL Did you see your little pink one Lin??? So cute...LOLOLOL
Hugs,
Susan
PS. This is the best flower of all..LOL :-)

Oh My, Susan .... I TOTALLY agree ... that is the Most Wonderful Flower of all! What a gift!

I am so envious! We were never blessed with children so won't have any of those grandbaby type flowers to tend and spoil! Unless I can find a couple to adopt!

He is absolutely adorable .... a handsome little guy!

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

I have a question... Don't I always??? LOL I told Bmedel that I would send her some cuttings of my Begonia and I have not gotten around to it... Well I want to know is it to late to send at this time of year? I am zone 7 she is in zone 3b? Thanks for any help..
Off to bed I go...

Susan

I would think it's way too cold to ship now Susan, but maybe you can dmail Brenda and ask her what her weather is like. We are still @ 80 during the day here and 60 at night but we are supposed to have a cold front come through the end of the week. I think Friday or Saturday our high will be right at 68 or so and our low may be low 40's .... but fortunately it won't last but one night ... then back to the mid 70's. We've been having great weather! About 10 degrees below normal for this time of year, but I'm loving it .... low humidity too which is just wonderful!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin, we have the same kind of weather I have decided. We haven't had high humidity either. It is delightful. I will check but I think the newsman said we are getting a cool front in at the end of the week, too.

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Hey Susan!! As much as I would love that begonia I'm going to have to wait until spring . Do you know what our forecast is for tonight??? 10 degrees................ yep, no misprint here, TEN measly little degrees!!!!

I'm going to go make myself a note and come spring I will come a beggin' for that begonia! LOL

We do get windows here and there with decent temps when you can ship but that would be too much pressure I'm sure! I just don't feel right d-mailing you and saying "You have four days to get that begonia to me!!!" LOL So I'll be patient until spring..........but I do so appreciate your thinking of me!

~Brenda
P.S. Lin and Gail I'm disliking you very much at this moment!!!! 80 degrees?? come on???
You know I'm just kidding!! Isn't it amazing the variations in temps across this country??? We are snow covered with an inch or two and I won't be seeing the ground again until late March or April.........

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Brenda,
We will be in the 50's here tonight and not to the end of the week in the lower 30's... If I ship on Sat it would get there on Monday... I could put them in a blanket of sorts... I have to cut them as they are way and I mean way to big to keep in the house this size... Or I could play with planting and root you several...
let me know...
Susan

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

After seeing everyones beautiful pics I sure wish I could understand how to do that! I have 4 AV's, and although they are still alive, I just can't seem to grasp what I read on the web site of how to cut and so on! I have no clue what they are, other than one is purple, one is white, a pink one, and one that is almost a periwinkle blue. I do know that I am in love with the AV's and would really like to understand how to do this! Especially now that I have room to move other plants out to the GH to make room to grow more babies! LOL

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

mistrygardener,

Welcome aboard the AV forum! I bought my first Walmart african violet back in January of this year and have learned everything right her on this forum by asking specific questions.

Also, the stickys at the top of the forum have great information. I have learned a lot from both www.rachelsreflections.com where she has an index of subjects you can choose from. Then TheVioletBarn www.violetbarn.com has a place called culture on the left. It will take you to any subject about african violets you could want to know.

Please join in on the fun with us.

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Welcome misty....I too am new this year to propagating violets and I learned the basics by following the tutorials from robs violet barn that Gail links to above. Here is the specific page about doing it from leaf http://www.violetbarn.com/violets_by_leaf.htm

The rest has been gleaned from here at DG and it has been great, the only other thing I can do now to improve my results is MOVE to a warmer state. LOL

HI Susan....well if the begonia isn't real real dear to you (I don't want to experiment with something too precious or hard to come by!) I'd like to give the over the weekend shipping a go!! Although it is right now 11 degrees outside my house by the weekend I'm to be back at right about the freezing level so with some extra wrapping I think they would do ok. Here is how my mind is working....the box will actually be in Boise over the weekend and they are 10 to 20 degrees warmer than we are. Then early on Monday morning the big truck will bring our mail up the mountain to us and on Monday we will be in the upper 30's to 40's for day time temps so it should work....Does that make sense?? :0)

~Brenda

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Ship on Saturday, that's the day to ship :) Right Brenda?

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

That's right Kim! Saturday shipping from Maine to Idaho has had my plants here come Monday each time! I'm amazed to know that there are postal workers slaving away all weekend, at least in the transporting end!

~Brenda

(Zone 1)

Brenda .... Upper 30's for DAYTIME temps???!!! Unbelievable! That is COLD!

...... It's 77 degrees here right now. We are supposed to have highs of right around 80 all week with one day (Friday) high of only 68 - a cold front coming through! Yeah, Yeah, I know .... 68 a cold front ? .... hee hee but we will get lows that one night in the 40's and then it's supposed to warm back up again. This is my kind of weather. I don't mind mid to upper 40's at night and I love the daytime temps in the 60's and 70's with low humidity! Perfect weather!

Hey Tammy! Welcome to the African Violet forum! You will love it here! Great folks on this forum! I have learned so much from these ladies! Very generous with their advice as well as their plants! You will be addicted in no time!

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Hi all, thanks for the welcome!
Lin, you just knew I would end up here sooner or later, didn't ya?! LOL
I have felt welcome in most forums, for sure!
I want to get every color of AV that there is, then I think I need to try one of the other plants you all talk about on here, too! I have the 3 fairly healthy AV's, then one that is starting to perk up that I took from the Mother plant. I would love to learn more about them so I can get others addicted to them! :)
Thanks for such a warm welcome! Tammy

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Glad you are here, too, again!!!!!

Brenda,
I don't know how you even live in that climate. The weatherman just announced that a cold front is coming in tonight. We will have a low of 55 degrees tonight and a high of only 72 tomorrow (LOL).

It must be dry with little humidity where you live in that kind of cold or you would actually freeze to death if you had to add humidity to the temps you have.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Hi again! I was just wondering on your thoughts of using the AV food? I bought some yesterday and have used it, but just wanted to hear the "experts" thoughts on it! Thanks, Tammy

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

What AV food are you referring to, Tammy?

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

I'm sorry, Gail. I am having pc problems for some reason and my posts are not wanting to go through. I am using Mircale-Gro specifically for AV's. Tammy

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Well, I think it is NOT my PC as I seen on the ID Forum where ones post went on 3 times in a row. ?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I just blamed it on my internet provider and i feel badly about that. There is a problem evidently on this site. I will need to email my provider and tell him it is not their problem.

I have never used Miracle Grow for avs but that doesn't mean anything. I used a fertilizer that i get from Hill Country African Violets that is a 12-36-14. Now I am using it 3 times in a row then either using on the 4th time a balanced fertilizer like Schultz 20-20-20- or 10-10-10.

Everyone does things differently if it works for them. I just found that i didn't get enough blooms when I used an AV fertilizer all the time. That 2nd number needed to be higher to produce more blooms.

*******edited to say I am going to leave you all. Have been with my friend from out of town all day and just got home about 7 pm our time.........
