Hello All,
Well about a month ago Gail sent me some leafs to grow as I have never tryed this before... Well I told her you would all hear me doing the happy dance when and if I saw any life in them... WELL I am doing the happy dance... YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH One that is a Chirita is growing a baby .... I am so thrilled I dont know how to act... I will take a picture of it tomorrow to show you all..... I also have a few AV leafs still alive and I can't wait...
Thank you Gail.... I also have now grown a coleus from a leaf... Does not sound much to some but for a person who never did this before it is great... Also Kim(Dimmer) had sent me some things and they are also still alive... I can't thank you all for the help and the kindness with helping me to learn this...
I am hoping now things will slow down in the house, as we had my DIL's baby shower today and I can stop cleaning..LOL Who wants to clean when we can play with the plants....
Hugs to all,
Susan
growing a leaf !
I had the same experience this weekend. Gail had also sent me some leaves to plant and they had rooted so I decided to pot them up in seperat pots and lo and behold I have babies on some of the leaves. I am so excited. I too am grateful for all of the help and advice I have gleaned from this web site.
Yahoo!
Hi Ya Susan and Begoniadude! ! Isn't it exciting when you see the first sign of little baby "ears" popping up next to Mom leaf??!! Now you will both be hooked for life on these wonderful plants! I still haven't gotten the hang of Streptocarpus yet but I'm loving Chirita's and Episcia's - two plants that are new to me!
Can't wait to see some photo's of your babies!
Still WAITING for my leaves to show some kind of life.
I'm in the same boat with Lin, still haven't gotten the strep thing down yet but loving episcia and have 1 Chirita that is still living. Meanwhile I watch full grown streps shrivel up to nothing :(
SO happy for your success :) Can't wait to see a picture :)
Congratulations!
Kim
I sure am glad to have the company Kim! LOL ... not that I'm happy you aren't having luck with Strep's. I'm just glad to know it's not just me! Mine do the same thing .... just slowly seem to shrivel up to nothing and die completely! Now, I did have one Chirita (Diane Marie) that died. Don't know what happened there ... she was a real pretty one too.
I think Episcia's are my new TRUE love!! I am just so thrilled with my first bloom! I keep walking by and staring at it every day! Hopefully some of the other Episcia's will bloom for me before long.
I have to say Lin, Episcia's so far have been the easiest for me also :)
I had some unrooted stolons (from Karen, who I miss dearly on a daily basis) and not only have these rooted but I THINK I may see a new leaf on a couple of them :) I have 1 Chirita and so far it hasn't shown any signs of being unhappy.
I really don't know what I'm doing wrong with streps but I'm all done making myself sick over it. I was literally REALLY getting down and nautious over them but have to concentrate on what I AM making happy at this point.
Still have leaves down but so far no sign of babies yet so I really can't wait to see Susan's new little ears :) I LOVE seeing people's babies :)
Kim
I have had the same problems with Streps. Most of the leaves that Gail sent me just rotted away. I have found though that those that have the end stem seem to root for me. All three of mine have rooted that way. Still looking for babies though. I will be moving them out to the greenhouse tonight. It is cooler there and a little more light than under the bulbs.
Woo Hoo ... I am so glad I am not alone! I was really thinking something was wrong with me. LOL. Just kidding of course, but it sure is good to know that it's not just me. Kim, now we have company!
Kim, I learned long ago that it was a waste of time to get depressed over plants. I finally got real mad and just said .... Live or Don't ... if you don't like it here than that's okay, I just won't adopt any more of you again! LOL. But I do end up trying again. I just don't worry about it much anymore if a plant doesn't survive.
Woo Hoo .... Way to go Susan! I am doing the Happy Dance with you. Great growing gal!
The green on the perlite is algae. I get it too ... from all the high humidity/moisture.
Hello Susan,
I just re-read your original post and see that you wrote "about a month ago". I am SO happy to read that because it hasn't been quite a month for mine yet so I'm not giving up hope :) Most of mine were put down on 10/12 so there is still plenty of time for them to smarten up *lol*
I have had some rot but I know it's because I overwatered them. I tried the leaves 2 different ways and the ones in the solo cups with perlite, vermiculite and a TINY bit of soil have roots. No babies yet but I'm sure they're working on it *lol*....or they BETTER be *lol*
Kim
Susan!! They look Marvelous..You will be hooked now for sure..lol...
Hey Kim..don't ever give up hope..just when you think they aren't going to make babies.. you turn around one day and there they are.Sometimes its takes a couple of months before I see any little ears...just remember...Patience..My Dear..lol
aaaaaah, Patience .... LOL. I don't have much of that!
Me either Lin..LOL but it sounded good when I typed it : )
They little leafs get bigger everyday... Also I planted allot of passion flower seeds and they are also coming up... I love it...
Hugs,
Susan
Susan
I noticed that the one leave has brown don't worry about it I had a few and the babys still come. Or maybe that is the color of the leave LOL or well let it grow and it will come ok have to go to work oh it is so cold out side but I will dress warm will be getting back on the computer maybe in a month when road construction comes to a close take care all
Dimmer(AKA) Kim
Great going Susan!
Yes, I too, have strep leaves down since October 6th, and I am seeing the first babies appear this week. Yay!
Hang in there Kim! You'll probably see some babies next week!
Karen
BTW... I stare at mine... but that doesn't seem to make them come up any faster! LOL!!!
I have never gotten babies in a months time! It must be my overall cooler growing conditions here. It's at least 6 if not 8 weeks for me!! But no matter when they come up or when the seeds sprout it's FUN!!
~Brenda
I hear ya Brenda,The soonest I have ever seen babies is 8 weeks and thats during the summer..lol..I put leaves down august 9th and just this past week I am seeing little ears...I agree its probably our cooler temps..but oh yes... the babies are still definitely worth the wait : )
I LOVE hearing these confessions *lmao* as it makes me feel SO good that I'm not getting babies "overnight" like I THOUGHT you all did *lol* We are down to like NO sunshine now and just gray/dreary days so it may take 6 months but I refuse to give up *lol*
Congratulations, Susan!
You go girl!
Wow! Gail, is that Begoinia 'Bonita Shea'??? I gotta try that! Do you just stick a leaf like you would an AV leaf??? WONDERFUL! I had no idea ... I thought you could only grow Begonia's by stem cuttings!!
Look at those cute little baby begonia's!!
Lin, use your regular potting av mix..............only put a small piece of the stem in (like 1/4" of the petiole) and put under glass or something for humidity. You can grow any leaf like this. I try to put the leaf down on the soil (not in the soil but resting comfortably on the soil)..........
good luck and try all kinds of leaves. It is a kick to me! Remember my ZZ leaves I tried. I will show you a fun pic of how rooted it got with a big caudex and all (LOL)
Oh, I do remember seeing your post with photo's when you did your ZZ leaves! I think I might take a couple of leaves from my ZZ plant and root them!
Lin, all these rooted leaves make great trade items and fun to do anyway!
I just ordered my first leaves from Bluebird greenhouse. They arrived in great condition.
So, now I am waiting impatiently....
uh oh! rosewynd, you will be the next sucker to love this forum! It is a very addictive place to hang around. I order a lot of leaves from Cedar Creek Violets (great prices) and The Velvet Leaf is good, too.
****but the DGers are the best in trading
Hi,
Well two more leafs are popping out babies... I love it that they are not all the same ones ... I also have a flower on one of the little AV's that Lin sent to me... Is the first AV I ever had bloom after I bought it... Doing the happy here again...
Thanks for the kind words and also the help I have gotten... I am thrilled...
Hugs to all,
Susan
Susan, sounds like you need to keep doing the happy dance! It is working for you!
Gessiegail, I don't have anything to trade yet. But I will! I sold my old house and built (a mobile) on this new property, and that took a year - so I gave all my plants away. I've been here for 2 yrs now, but there was so much to do!
Now I finally have some house plants! I'm a real person again, LOL!
congratulations on a new home and new plants!
I know the feeling of being 'incomplete' until plants are growing around me!
So True .... I too am one who needs something green and growing! When my hubby retires in another 7 years his plan is to buy a larger boat (Trawler) to travel the waterways. He knows I will have to have a couple of plants on board! We will sell this house and buy a townhouse for our permanent residence but if we are traveling about on the waters I guess I won't have many plants at home, so will have to have a couple on board with me!
Hi Ladies,
I have two more babies coming from the Leafs that Gail sent to me... YEAHHHHHHHHHHHH Also Lin sent me awhile back some little AV plants... I always kill them... Well I have a pink bloom on one of them and I am just tickled... LOL I have never had one that bloomed except when I first got them.... so YEAH again...
I am sorry I have not been around much but I swear this house and life is going to kill me...LOL My son that had surgery not to long ago has a staph infection and they believe it is the new one Mercer? or MRSA? He will know for sure on Thursday when test come back... This son and his wife have had a rough year.... I truly hope things turn around for them soon....
I will send a picture tomorrow of the pink AV.... I also have passion flower seeds popping out ...LOL
I miss ya ladies...
Hugs,
Susan
We will keep you son in our thoughts and pray that it is not MRSA! At least they are going to find out early enough if it is to get the right antibiotic.
congrats...........let us know when you need more as you seem to have the hang of it going for you!
Susan: So sorry to hear about your son and that awful MRSA infection! They have been talking about that particular strain of staph in the news lately. The only reason I know anything about it is because my Mom was diabetic and got a foot infection that ended up mutating from one type of staph into the MRSA (Mersa). They switched antibiotics a few times and finally got it under control. So, tell your son to hang in there!
I will keep your son, his wife and your whole family in my thoughts and prayers.
Congrats! on your leaf babies! Isn't it fun growing from a little leaf? Yeah, post some pic's of your babies when you get a chance.
Don't forget to take care of you! Can't wait to see pic's of your leaf babies and your pink av bloom as well as the passion flower seedlings!
We don't know for sure if it is that type yet.. We will know on Thursday or Friday...
I am really loving this growing from a leaf... It is great to see the little ones coming up...
Take care of me??? Ok... I will try... It has been one thing after another here... Life has a way of that at times... I have no worries that things will be up again here sooooon... :-)
Hugs,
Susan
