What did you learn as a Girl/Boy Scout?

St. Louis County, MO(Zone 5a)

Just for fun, what did you learn as a Girl or Boy Scout that you still do? Do you stuff toilet paper rolls with dryer lint for fire starters? Make foil packs? come on, share!

How about campfire banana boats?? Yum Yum --
Leave bannana in the peal and slit down the center lenght wise.
stuff center "slit" area with chocolate chips, mini marshmallows and
cherry bits. Wrap loosly in foil and set on warm coals for 5-10 min.
Open and EAT!! YUMMY

Gulfport, MS

I learned to knit, and it's been a life-long hobby. Couldn't count the afghans I have made. My daughter learned to quilt--maybe it will be the same for her later.

catlover, that is nice. I learned fancy table setting, knot tying (still handy), fire starting (handy), and how to clean latrines, haha. I loved camping except for that part.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Brownies, scouts, etc.

In a special presentation, I learned all about
all the different people in the world. It was my
first real experience in learning the world had
different people of different color with different cultures.
I seem to recall singing a song about all the different people.

I learned my aunt, who was also the troop leader, was
hateful and spiteful, not to mention a chain smoker even
around the kids.

I learned that even after I sold all the cookies required, I would
never receive my cookie badge.

The fun came back into the picture when I met a grown woman
with my same name at a get together. She carried me around on
her shoulders most of the day and we had a grand time. I played the
piano, made tamales and had a great day!

A few times, we went to see the Ice Capades, the time I
realized that a rest room was not for taking a nap; which I so longed to
do. What an amazing thing for a young child to see.

One of the most memorable moments was realizing that a helium balloon
would truly fly away, never to be seen again.

Wuvie, you had some negative experience! That is too bad. I am glad you did have some good experiences also.

Rosemont, ON(Zone 4a)

My mother enrolled me in the Brownies, as I was too young to join the Girl Guides. I learned that I was hopeless at tying knots, and didn't quite know what I was doing with all these other kids who seemed to be much more skillful than me, and knew the words to all the songs. This was in England in the 1950's. I remember that one day we went on a bus trip to meet the American Brownie troop at a nearby U.S. Air Base. That was an eye-opener, as I had never met any American kids before. They were so confident and well dressed and bouncing with good health! They were very gracious to us skinny, shy, English children in ragged uniforms, and gave us Cokes to drink (which I had never drunk before).

I still can't tie knots.

Fayette, MO(Zone 6a)

I learned how to row a canoe and shoot with a bow and arrow.

I still have a sit-a-pon, we made them when my girls were in scouts and I use it in the yard when i'm weeding. I made a wide-body one, lol.
