Ironically, Charlene, they did build a dam to divert the mud and keep it off the lawn. Neither my husband nor I told them anything about the irises, which were way overgrown with grass and a long way from where they were drilling. I'll start tomorrow moving chunks off. The bed that is covered was the "oldies but goodies" bed, nothing high dollar. On the positive side, we do have a very good well. :>)

Mitch, I'm hoping we don't have to dig very deep. She has too much shade to grow water lilies, and most other things can grow in shallower water. If we raise it a few inches above the ground, it shouldn't have to go through too many roots.

That said... I just finished digging the hole to enlarge mine. I found roots--FAT roots--and I don't even know whose roots they are.

Also found my cable. :) Aren't those things supposed to be deeper than 18 inches????

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

mmmm I think I am going to have to talk to my daughter she works for Baker Hughes in Tyler and see just what she can tell me as to if you can go after the drillers.
I do know that they have been sending the field engineers over around Decatur and areas around Dallas lately

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I built one at one time out of landscape timers and a shower curtian... it was very nice for the rent house before buying this place. simple design too... all above ground.

Pattie, I "found" my Comcast cable last fall while digging a hole for a plant!! I thought they had buried it right next to the back fence, but it was out a good 2 feet. I put my shovel right smack through it. The good news is the repair guy came out the very next day and it didn't cost me anything. It's not a good way to find out exactly where the cable was laid, that's for sure.

They put it inside your yard? That's really bad. It's supposed to be in the easement area.

Mine runs from the alley right up the side of my yard. I did know it was down there, so I managed not to cut it. But it's been cut several times before. There's a patio there and it's in the way of the lawnmower, etc. Very inconvenient.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

lady, you need to call them. They will send a two man crew out to bury it.

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, my cable has to run through my yard, as there is no easement area (there is no alley, all garages face the street in my neighborhood). The cable box is in the back corner, so the cable runs alongside the fence and then cuts directly through my backyard and ends up at the back of my house (I hope I described that in a way that makes sense). Everything is below ground, and I even "thought" that I knew exactly where it was. The repair guy said that Comcast won't charge me until I cut through the cable a few more times, so that made me feel better.

Perfect sense--that's how mine is too. Our electric meter is on the side of the house next to that little patio, so that's where they put the cable too. They do have to run it through your yard somewhere. At the time we didn't have that area landscaped, so they just went right through the middle. :(

Christi, you are right. All of our cable wiring is no longer up to "standard" (theirs) and really needs to be redone. I'm sure they would bury the cable deeper if we asked. But... I just really don't want them digging through there. We have mature trees out there now which would be disturbed. And my little pond sits on top of it, with a paver path and a lot of plants. Besides all of THAT, we had a contractor out in July who dug up that whole side of our lot and then, before he abandoned the job, buried everything under 15 inches of garbage. We are only now getting all of that cleaned up. I'm just not up to doing all of that again!

FIOS finally made it to our neighborhood this week (yea!). So hopefully it'll be a moot question.

Hey PAT...I talked to my daughter and her BF tonight.
Is the mud slide from an oil well or a water well?
If it is from an oil well drilling then you should call the company that owns the well and talk to them
most of them will in fact either pay the damages or fix it...now mind you they could just send some guys out to do the work but they are stil trying to fix the problem.
They both said the companies usually put down rock so it won't do that
They also said IF you have no luck in getting it taken care of to call an attorney as most in Texas are versed in oil well stuff and if the one you call isn't then they should be able to tell ya who to call that is.

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you, Mibus, but this is a water well mess and we totally own it. We are not upset with anyone, and we have the equipment to do the clean-up. Thanks for your concern!

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

ok well I wasn't sure so I thought I would check since my DD works as a field engineer for Baker Hughes and so does her BF...So we all know for future reference IF anyone comes to drill an oil well on anyones land...LOL

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Pat.....Good luck on finding your Iris they are beautiful, and I see you even had them tagged!

TARogers......your request may have gotten buried with the mud there. LOL!! It is in the Spring you say??? I am getting seeds ready now for a seed exchange and as I look through them I can see what I have an abundance of. What is your deadline on receiving?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Ted~ I have a lot of the Cassia alata coming ripe now. It is an annual up that way, as it is here. Mine got about 9' this year. I have some other great seeds too. I'll make you up some and send them out.

I would like as many Milkweed seeds as I can round up myself.............
I give them away anywhere I can. I leave them on the counter at the Wild Bird Store near me too. I will send sasbe to anyone who can email me. I advertise "Free Seeds" on my 'business card' for Butterfly Conservation... I always like to have MW!! Don't worry about cleaning them out.. I will do that when I get them.

Deb, your Cassia photo makes me anxious for spring ... and it is just barely fall now!!
:-)

Carla

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

There is so much to do before spring... whew!

Next weekend DH, the kids and I are going exploring on our land in the Big Thicket (Hardin County). I am hoping to find some interesting plants there, and maybe bring back a few. I want to see what seeds I can collect too. If I get any good pics I will make a thread about it.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

That would be wonderful Deb. I hope you get some good ones.
Josephine.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

debnes, does the cassia reseed itself here? also, i can start collecting scarlet milkweed if you want those so lmk.

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

The Spring Fling thing is not until April. So everyone has time. I have been out collecting seeds from my garden also.
The class this month was on butterfly gardening.
I have to give a class on Hypertufa during the Spring Fling.
Gave Mitch all my old seeds and then found out I had to find seeds. LOL

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

When do those Cassia Alata seeds ripen? I was at my mom's new house last Saturday and we drove by a Dallas Elementary School that had a big one in their nice learning garden, but I noticed there weren't any brown seed pods. They might have already collected them all, but I wanted to see what the pods looked like on the tree.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Heya Staci!
I just went out and took a pic of the seed pods I will be picking today. This also shows how cool the leaf branches are at night, and in cool overcasts or rain. They are still folded together at a little past 7 am. This is only one of 7 branches of seeds here in this pic.

Yes Barbara! I would love the seeds for the MW. Don't remove them until the pods are split open a little, (or a lot). I will send ya a sasbe.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Yep, the one I saw had only green seed pods so they must have picked all of them. It was the first time I had seen one in person and it sure was a neat plant

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Wow Deb, they do make a lot of seed!

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

deb...........if you don't pick the cassia seeds, will they reseed themselves? and i will start collecting the pods on the milkweed.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Barbara,
They have been known to, but it happens more often in zone 9+. Here they could germinate but not as many likely to germinate that way here.

Just stuff the MW seeds in paper lunch sacks, when you get the envelope you can just put the sack in the env. from there. I will sort and clean the fluff off them here.

Thank you!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Hello Everyone, Richard received his Dave's tee shirt, and Deb got a check and found the book she was missing, so the extra money was very well spent.
Thank you all very much. Looking forward to seeing all of you next year.
Josephine.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

i got your envelope today deb. i already cleaned the fluff and i have them in a paper envelope. i will do my best to get them off tomorrow.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you Josephine! Bless your heart bigtime!! I really didn't expect that, but it was amazing of you!! My library is all back together now.. whew!

Cool Barbara... I was hoping I put the address on right, lol.
Thank you so much!!
