November Bingo?

North Augusta, ON

We were lucky, we lived right next door. Gramma taught me to knit and crochet, and I got to stay home from school a lot to help Grampa in the garden.

Kim and I have made so many deals on dmail I am just too excited!!!!! What skills and patience you must have, Kim.

Lin, you are right in saying that we are getting the best end of the deal. As far as afghans hand made, when I lived in cold country I found this woman who made me 10 beige pure wool afghans for the house (a leaky cold house in the mountains). We couldn't even get the house warm enough to sit around without a wool afghan wrapped around us. To this day, my kids each have 2 and I have the rest of them.

Wool lasts forever I guess because they look as nice today as they did when she first knitted them back in '81.

I just threw away 2 beautiful poncho's I made my daughter that she outgrew. I hated to throw them away but they aren't "cool" anymore and I didn't know what else to do with them. Gram still makes over 40 pairs of mittens every year and donates them to the town hall for kids who go to school with no mittens. And she is FOREVER making baby sets. It's one of those things though, most people don't really like hand made gifts anymore. With that being said, my mother in law and sister in law BOTH asked for hand made something this year which totally surprised me. It is nice to have the needle back in hand again :)

Kim, this is a chatty thread by definition, I think... no worries about going O/T. And you definitely didn't cross any lines with regard to the AUP; I just wasn't sure where the discussion was going and didn't want anybody to get into hot water with admin.

One of my grandmothers crocheted and tatted, and the other was skilled at knitting and needlepoint. So we have some wonderful heirlooms and "memory pieces" from them! I've done a little knitting, and I'd like to learn to crochet. Grandma taught me how to tat, at least the basic knot, but oh golly is it hard to get all those little bits lined up as you go along with the lace!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

With all the rest of the "retro" clothes I'm seeing (ugh, most of those tops were unattractive the first time they were popular in the 70's!), I can't believe ponchos aren't "cool" anymore... I'll bet they will be "in" again soon!

(Zone 1)

I remember back in the 70's making a couple of small latch hook rugs. It was fun and I could do it while watching t.v. And my dear MIL taught me how to knit in 1969 but I never really learned how to knit anything in particular. Hubby and I drove cross country from Florida to California when he had to attend a school for the Navy and I knit a long scarf that ended up being used for a Bird Cage cover!

A lady who attends our University Basketball games made me a Royal Blue & Gold (University's color's) scarf last year that I take to games! She is always knitting ... makes tons of baby blankets for the nursery at the hospital. My friends mom used to crochet and knit all kinds of baby blankets and caps and little baby sweaters when she was alive and donated them to hospital nurseries.

Poncho's! I remember them well ... yes they were popular back in the 70's. I had one that my MIL made for me that was not knitted, but rather patchwork! When I think of it now, I think it was hideous ... all those vivid colors of patchwork fabric ... but back then I dearly loved it! I did have one too that my aunt either crocheted or knitted ... can't remember which ... just remember it was kinda open weave. I had totally forgotten about poncho's!

Hey Critter, are you still here? I see the Chat Room is open sign and I go there and this is what I get. I typed in my message and hit send but nothing happens! Any ideas?

I typed in: Chat Room is open but nobody is home?

The only handwork I ever mastered was needlepoint. I chose to always do petit point which was so tedious but I loved it. An artist friend and I would color the canvas with designs and sit on the cold winter nights in the mountains by the fireplace and just needlepoint away.

It would normally take me about 9 months of hard work to complete a canvass of 20x20. The last things I made before quitting were Christmas Stockings for the kids in petit point with all those glistening new threads they had just come out with. The ornaments on the stockings were as bright as real life in those new colors.

Other than needlepoint I never attempted any other craft!

I'm here, but haven't stopped by chat yet tonight... I'll go there now..

(Zone 1)

I still can't get in the Chat Room for some reason.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

chat room looks pretty much as usual to me... try again? are you using firefox? sometimes there are issues with internet explorer...

Gail, I can't imagine having enough patience to do petit point... that's as painstaking as tatting!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

There are half a dozen people in the chat room at present... ?! *pouting* because you can't get in!

(Zone 1)

I'm using Safari ... will try Firefox and see if I can get on!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Kim, on the poncho one thought might be in the future if you have any senior citizens centers, they might have grandchildren that they take care of, that might be able to use them. We have both a food bank and senior citizen center that are always looking for blankets, coats and anything warm that can be worn in the winter.
I take sweaters, coats and blankets to them. I just wash or clean them and you would be pleased to see the happy faces. In the summer, they do a fan drive. Many of our seniors take care of their grand children and many, many of themdo not have air conditioning or fans.

I've been known to undo knitted things and reuse the yarn :))

I had some beautiful hand knitted sweaters, couldn't give them away, so I undid them and reused the yarn for afghans.

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

You know, I would have done both of those suggestions but my daughter had stained the ponchos and I wasn't into doing all the stain treatments etc. to get the stains out. I'm domestic but not THAT domestic *lol*. I had made them with spare yarn and they were ready for the trash *lol*

Happy Halloween EVERYONE!

Is it too late to include me in the November bingo? Edited to say, "i've never seen such beautful doilies Kim". I started making my own soap last year. There's no comparison to store bought. like all the prizes, don't have room for more plants, but I might win one Ilike better than what I have. Count me in if I've made the deadline.

Cindy ... The game for November hasn't even gotten underway yet, so Please join us when it does! Keep watching the AV forum and when Critterologist is ready, she will post a new thread with the heading "November Bingo!" And, she will give us all the details of the game and a list of names to choose from for your card. I am going to be the cardholder for the November game so I won't actually be playing the game, but verifying when people get bingo. It really is a lot of fun so we sure hope you join in! I think it will probably be around the middle of the month for the game to begin!

Was just re-reading this thread and noticed I somehow missed the question about what different things do we newbies grow- I have quite a large Philodendron collection probably about 50 or so different species. Add to that another couple dozen or so of Monsteras, Syngoniums, Scindapsis, and Epipremnums. Besides having the usual planrs most people have. One very stubborn Rose Grape(Medinilla magnifica) has only bloomed for me once a couple years ago, but I have hopes for the near future? A fair sized Orchid collection- few dozen- Those are new for me. And a lot of succulents. And new last month 11 Episcias! My first! ....Might have been easier to tell y'all what I don't growLOL

Forgot Hoyas! How could I?! Dozen or so of those

I'm back home now after some extra time in Pittsburgh (helping out my folks)... My new laptop has arrived, and my FIL tells me his new high speed conection is working nicely, so we're all systems go for starting the Bingo game the day before Thanksgiving!

I'll post a new thread in a day or two with a list to choose from (I'll link it here so nobody misses it).

Hope everybody had a wonderful weekend!!

(Zone 1)

Welcome Home Critter! We missed you! I hope everyone is getting ready for the November AV Bingo! I look forward to being cardholder again!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Friends............I am going to take a break to get ready for the holidays and will be back before Christmas........so don't think I am gone(LOL)
i won't be playing bingo though the prize is still available if wanted.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

You know somebody would love to win your plants, but it might be more fun for you to offer them during a month when you can play. It's up to you!

I'm wrestling with my new laptop, trying to get everything that I need loaded onto it so I can run the Bingo game next week. If I'm successful, we can start on or around Thanksgiving Day... otherwise, we'll have to wait a few days until I'm back at my desk.

Either way, I've just finished making a list and checking it twice. I'll be posting a game thread soon so people can get their cards chosen and sent in to Lin!

(Zone 1)

I'll be watching my d-mail for everyone's cards! And, watching for the Game Thread too!
