Good idea, Critter! In fact, I think it is such a good idea I am hoping that from now on, the first winner gets to choose which prize she wants and on down the line. That is a great novel idea and people who win will get a choice of what they need or want.
November Bingo?
I think that is an AWESOME idea!
Picture of "the lady" tomorrow. She's being starched as I type *lol*
Oh, can't wait to see her Kim!
what fun! i will pay postage as long as it is not out of the country--then postage might be more than my soaps! seems first winner picking first prize is a great idea!
This sounds like so much fun but I'm not sure. After reading this one and the last Bingo thread, it sounds like you have to be home during the day. And I'll be at work! COuld check on my lunch hour but that could be any where from 12:30-3:00. Unless I'm not understanding how it works- which is HIGHLY possible. Actually I still don't have a clue. If I do it I'm just going to try to hopefully figure it out as I go along!
PS: Just have to share- My older daughter(22 yrs old) who lives in Missouri just found out she won a contest she had entered to be kind of a spokesperson/model for some big sports thing there. I'm so proud! Has a calender coming out and is shooting commercials for a couple of businesses already. Is a little motherly bragging OK?
Dianesjungle: Motherly bragging is highly ENCOURAGED!! Congrat's to your daughter! I know you are proud of her!
Regarding Bingo: Some of us are retired and some work full time. Those who work just check the bingo thread at night to see the calls that have been made for that day! So, please consider playing. If you can't check in during the day, you can always pop in later in the evening when you are home!
Thanks Lin!
Ok I'll be one of those checking at night I suppose!
Planolinda- I guess we'll be the newbies
And Kim-
I can't wait to see your doily! I love victorian decor- I use that style a lot in my house
Hey, please pass our congratulations along to your daughter!
Occasionally a game comes down to the wire with everyone seemingly waiting for one last call... and then whoever is quickest to post wins. But since it's possible to Bingo! any time after 15 calls have been posted, sometimes the winners are spread out and somebody posts Bingo! late at night when they check on the thread.
Welcome to all the newbies :) I'm a newbie too :) Not a newbie to Dave's but a newbie to this forum and to gessie's. So far it's been a WONDERFUL experience. I'm struggling right now with streps but so far so good with the others :)
Congratulations to your daughter Diane! She must be BEAUTIFUL!
What do you other newbies like to grow? I have a few hoyas left (been dwindling these down a little), crown of thorns, a few adeniums, a couple epiphyllums, a plumie, Oxalis, aeschyanthus, nematanthus, I have a few episcia babies which are doing great and that I rooted (wooo hooo) and 1 chirita so far. I have (because of the sweet ladies here) some streptocarpus but am REALLY struggling with these. So far these have been the most challenging for me. I'm hoping they make it but a few of them are quite questionable right now :( I'm trying to start babies from leaves but this is not turning out like I had hoped either :( I refuse to give up but think I will wait until spring before adding anything new to the decline :(
Last month was my first month playing Bingo and I really enjoyed just "hanging out" with everyone here :) It's SO much fun.
Karen, I miss you dearly and if you check in at the library, know I'm thinking and praying for you daily.
Brenda, you must be completely exhausted from your trip! I hope you are resting well and can't wait to hear about all the fun you had :)
Gail, it's nice having you "home" with your babies and they are all looking WONDERFUL!
Nancy, hope everything is going great ((((( hugs )))))
Lin, sure wish we were having your weather and all your plants look great too :)
Everyone, welcome to the greatest forum on Dave's :) and I hope all of you have a WONDERFUL day!
Stunning! You obviously take your time blocking and starching them... my grandmother used to say that was her least favorite step. That Victorian lady is just gorgeous. Her skirt is similar to the pattern of the antimacassar I have on the center back of the living room sofa... and yes, a solid background shows her off very well. I think she'd also look wonderful in a frame, on a fabric background. You're so generous to donate her as a Bingo prize! I know she'll be, well, prized. :-)
Well thank you very much Jill.
Yes, she would look stunning framed with a solid black background :) GREAT idea! I framed a crocheted butterfly one time. Hmmmm wonder what I ever did with it *lol*
Yes, starching and blocking are my 2 least favorite steps *lol*. I think it was the first time I have used the ironing board in over a year *lmao*
If I won that she would be in a frame in a matter of weeks. That piece of handwork is priceless. I am simply amazed that you show the kind of patience to complete such fabulous detailed work!
Oh my goodness, Kim!
Lovely doileys kim!
The soap prize sounds great too!
Looking forward to this game!
Kim,
They all sound great. Dish cloths are a great idea I never thought of.
Crit you idea about the prize picking is a good one.
I have a headache that is making me sick at my stomach so am leaving now and will be back later.
It really means alot to me that you like the doily Gail. It's funny, I do stuff like that but really don't "get into it" around my house *lol*. You would never knew I did handwork to look at my house. Other than 1 runner I don't really display my work. I enjoy making them as gifts for people who cherish them :) I used to try to sell them but would rather give them away to people who admire them :) I'm thinking of doing a butterfly doily to use to trade for plants this spring *hint, hint*. I'm thinking peach with yellow butterflies? I need to start something new and can't decide what to make next. Since I'm having a hard time with streps right now, I'm thinking I would like to try again this spring but won't have much to trade I don't think as my propagation plans are not turning out they way I had hoped. I think if plants were given the spring and summer to mature they would fare better than my babies are right now.
Good Morning Ladies!
Planolinda: Your soaps sound wonderful. That would be a great prize to offer in the game!
Kim: WOW .... Beautiful work! I wish I had not only the patience, but the creativity and skill it takes to make something so wonderful! Your doilies are absolutely gorgeous! I bet it takes a long time to make one, especially the Victorian Lady! Those dish cloths are great! I've never seen any like that before! If you ever have extras, you should think about paying the $5 for a classified ad here on DG and sell them! :) I know of one customer you would have .... :)
Makshi: Feel better soon!
Well, I'm off to run some errands so will check in later!
Have a great day everyone!
Oh my goodness I LOVE all of those doilies Kim..Those are all just so gorgeous!! Oh my...One of your beautiful doilies for plants...I would jump(fall all over myself..lol..) at that trade!! I have a feeling with an offer like that you will be turing out doilies like a madwoman and need a bigger house for all the plants you receive.Awesome..Your workmanship is amazing! A butterfly one would be so neat I bet... You hang in there with those streps and don't let yourself get discouraged..you will get the hang of them soon I am sure..
A big Hello to all of our newbies!! Looking forward to getting to know you all better : )
kim yes you need to sale them it would make great christmas gifts lol hint hint
Oh, I want to see a pic of one of the Butterfly doilies! That and the wedding ring would have to be my favorites!
Wow, you ladies are making me blush big time *lol*
My Grandma is very proud that I carry on the gift she gave me. She ALWAYS has her needles in hand and I'm one of the only ones that continue her tradition.
Believe it or not, with the Red Sox games this weekend I was able to do the Victorian Lady in just over a day :)
Lin, the butterfly doily is pictured on October Bingo #2. The pictures are HORRIBLE because all of those pictures were resized and have copyright stuff printed on them :( I can't get better pictures because every single doily I ever made I gave to my mom.....we all know about that *lol* so I will never see them again but I'm moving on and making doilies now for my "new family". I will have as many as I can make this winter to offer everyone this spring :)
I can't tell you how touching it is that you all like them. Really makes me feel "complete" inside. I went a long time without crocheting because of the major loss of so many of them but I missed "kreating" and now have all you ladies to "kreate" for and it "kompletes" me :)
Kim's Krochet Kreations! Love it! Your username of kimskreations is perfect! Oh how I would love to have some talent and creativity ...... and patience to do such beautiful work!
Now I'm off to find the October Bingo thread to look at the Butterfly doily!
Ooooh ...... NEW FAVORITE ..... "Ribbon Candy" .... and the one with the Hummingbird and Flower!!!
Aaaaah ... Kim, they are just all so very pretty! Is your daughter learning to crochet? I bet since shes a teenager she doesn't have time!
I LOVE making the ribbon candy and that's one of my favorites too :)
The hummingbird one, I'm not sure I will ever make another one of those as there were SO many ends to tie in and it was alot of work. IF I made it all one color it wouldn't be so bad but changing the colors was so tough.
I'm trying to use up the thread I have on hand before ordering anymore. My selection of colors isn't the best but I told hubby I would finish up what I have on hand before ordering and I really want to get past Christmas before purchasing more thread. But I have some nice spring colors on hand and will make as many "surprises" as I can :)
Kim I want the hummingbird one. Like everyone else has said you have talent and should get paid for it. Just think more money for plants and maybe a new pair of shoes.
Please don't take this as criticism, but as we go along with this topic we need to remember that commercial stuff is against the AUP. It's fine to encourage Kim to sell her Kreations, but if you want to buy something from her or ask her about prices, please Dmail her. The AUP lets us discuss commercial transactions via Dmail (as long as the discussion is initiated by the buyer -- a seller can't just send out solicitations).
That said... Yes, Kim, you should definitely make some doilies to trade or to sell! You can see already that they'd be snatched up. Please put me on the list of people who'd love to be Dmailed if you decide to do sales. :-)
Kim, does crochet thread get "old?" Can I test some to see if it's still useful by just giving it a tug and making sure it doesn't break easily? I'm thinking that I might still have some squirreled away in my craft closet.. but if so, it's thread that I inherited from a friend 10 years ago! :-o (Yes, my craft closet probably looks just as you're imagining, if not more so, LOL.)
Thanks for that reminder Critter! It is so easy to forget the rules of this site when we are all just chatting away!
You will have to remind me what AUP stands for ... hee hee, I know it's about the rules and such but have totally gone blank on what it is!
Ok ... just remembered: Acceptable Use Policy!
:-) Yep, and there's a link at the bottom of the page.
You're so right... I don't know how many times I've been chatting away and started to ask somebody a business type question... Then I have to go back to edit my post and Dmail them instead! Vendors who are members can't even answer simple questions in forum threads (like "when will you start shipping amaryllis this year?") without crossing the line into "creating business opportunities."
And no, I don't think we've crossed the line, but I wanted to make sure we wouldn't veer off thataway! :-)
Good point! Hey .... I am one who always needs reminders! LOL .... as the years pass and I get older, the more my brain forgets things, so I appreciate all the reminders I can get!
Wow, so much to catch up on.
I never thought anyone would even want the win a doily as a prize. I donated it as a prize because I couldn't afford to purchase a gift certificate and really didn't have any plants that are ready to share. I'm SO happy everyone liked them so much, it really means alot to me. I don't sell them. To me I would rather give them away.
So, with that being said. I will be making them until spring and will offer them as trade items for plants because my propagation techniques are not working like I thought they would and I have more and more rotting leaves daily. I will offer any doilies I have for trade in this forum before posting to the "trade forum" as I enjoy gessies and love this forum the most.
I don't know what patterns there will be and I'm using up the colors I have on hand. I don't really want to get into special orders or making them to sell as it's just too stressful and I also work during the day *lol*
I hope I didn't cross any boundaries and I have not offered to sell ANYTHING here at Dave's. I have requested postage for heavy plants before mailing and have returned every penny over the amount of the actual mailing. I have run to Home Depot for friends in my pajamas before to pick up a plant for them *lol* and been reimbursed for the amount for the plant and/or postage and that has been all that I have ever done. Hopefully that isn't crossing the line?
Jill, your thread should be just fine as long as it wasn't exposed to wet/dry/damp for prolonged amounts of time. Some of my favorite threads are the vintage threads. They just don't make them like they used to.
Kim---you do wonderful work!! I did doilies when I was younger, crocheted, still do the occasional afghan, but a person can only use so many afghans and I don't know enough people to give them away to.
One of my best memories of my Grandmother was the constant clicking of her knitting needles, she knitted lace tablecloths----she could watch TV and the needles would be clicking away and she wouldn't miss a stitch. She taught me how to do both.
That's the same thing with Gram. She used to sit in her chair (and still does today) and I would brush her hair and we would watch Chips together while she sat and knitted. She taught me everything with so much patience :) I remember having the LONGEST chain because that was all I could do and she would be so proud of me. I still love to gather up my needles and head over to the "farm" (that's what we all called her house) and sit and drink coffee together while we chat and knit. I love my Gram!
Miss Kim: I want to be one of the first to send you plants in exchange for one of those Beautiful hand crafted doilies! What a great trade! I know I'd be getting the better end of that deal!
I want the one called "Ribbon Candy" and I want to frame it! It is so pretty I would not want anything to get spilled on it! I think it would look so gorgeous having 3 of them framed all in a row! They are works of art! Kim, I certainly appreciate the effort you put into these doilies. I know some are more intricate and take longer than others! You, my friend have a talent. I know your grandmother must be very proud that you are carrying on the tradition! I would love to be able to do something like that but my eyesight isn't what it used to be and I don't have a lot of patience anymore.
I have a hand crocheted table cloth that my husbands grandmother made many years ago. My Mother In Law lived to be 97 and his grandmother lived to be be in her 90's too! Only heirloom like that I have.
Ok, I will take an Afghan in trade too!!!
Y'all need to realize ... some of us are not talented like that at all! I have a beautiful afghan that my best friends mom made me years ago. My aunt was in the middle of making (knitting) one for me when she passed away in 1991 and my mom gave it to me with the knitting needles and all the yarn - I gave it to an elderly lady at the assisted living facility where my MIL lived before she passed away. You'd have thought I gave her a million bucks! I just thought it was nice she had something to do that she enjoyed and then could enjoy the afghan when she finished it! It was navy blue and light blue combo which are not my colors. I'm sure my Aunt would understand and was smiling when I gave it away!
THAT is a remarkable heirloom! I have never taken the time to make a bedspread or tablecloth. I get bored real quick so I have to have something I can whip up within a week or two or I get frustrated.
Sorry Jill, we got WAAAY off the Bingo trail here.
Lin, sending you a D-Mail my friend.
Kim .... cherish these times with your Gram! You are making memories!
My own Mom (who has been gone almost 3 years now) had two grandkids who lived right in the same city within a couple of miles from her. They are 38 and 35 years old now. Mom was so sad that they never had the time to come visit her (until near the end of her life). My grandparents all passed away when I was young and I would have given anything to have them around as I was growing up and even when I was an adult! Some young people today just don't take the time to spend with their grandparents ... just too busy. I realize jobs and life get in the way sometimes but it's a shame.
