Brazos best blackberry

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

I offered these several months ago. We are going to tear down the old greenhouse and garage that these are growing all over this winter. In so doing we will have to dig up and throw away a bunch of this. Though I cannot swear that this is the type of berry, my Dad always told the story of how he got these through A & M. I DO know that they put off a berry bigger than a man's thumb and they are very sweet and are great for cooking or simply grazing. If you would like a start please let me know.

I would like gingers (love the blue or the shell kind) or fuschia that can handle Texas heat. However will also send for postage since I truly hate wasting anything.

aunt anne i don't have a thing but would love one of these for postage. i am assuming it is a thorned variety. not my favorite kind of plant but i would like one for my son and the birds. can you send the thing cut completely back to the first leaves?

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

I am going out of town tomorrow morning and won't be back till I get off work late Mon. So if you can wait till next weekend I will dig you a start. That's how I've always done them. And yes they do have thorns
:-( but more than make up for it with great production and taste. The stem will die back but plant it and it will come back, it doesn't matter how bad the stem looks.

I would like a dozen or so, I will overwinter them while here in Florida and redistribute to my friends who are in deep winter now. I would imagine that would give them a good start. What do you think? I can check out our local gingers and find you something you'd like.

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

Not a prob. Mittsy. Send me a d mail as a reminder next Fri. or Sat. and I'll get on it Sat. next.

Anne.

Ocean Springs, MS(Zone 8b)

Anne, I would love to have a couple if you have any left. I don't have any gingers but I can send you some cuttings of my blue Achimenes if you would be interested they root easy in water.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

anne, did you ever get the iochroma?

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

Never got an iochroma. Am still lusting after one though lol. Any one, every one.....well you know how it goes with plant lust. lol

Anne

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

well i have one that is wine i believe. it didn't bloom at all this year and it's plenty big. i had 3 -4 other colors but they didn't come back after the winter. i will see if there is a rooted one that i can dig or i can always send cuttings if you want.

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

cuttings work, whichever you'd like. Like I said I'll be in the beds next weekend.

Anne

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

so when do i need to send them so you get them when you want them. now i am going to send you 5-6 different cuttings to give you the best shot at a plant. is that enough? i will cut them and wrap them in paper towel. then i am going to wrap them in plastic and fill the plastic with water and seal it tightly at the top. does that sound good? usually i just wrap things like that with newspaper but i have heard some people say they put them inside ziploc bags. so which do you want me to do?

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

Send whenever you get the time. And since I've never tried to root iochromas and only once hibs at all, I've no idea which is the better way. Whatever you think is best works for me. I'm just so jazzed about finally getting an iochroma. lol

Anne

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

well i will be happy to send these, prob. today or tomorrow. there was someone in texas on another thread who felt that cuttings.......not rooted plants..........ought to be encased in plastic to keep the leaves fresh. she said it mimicked a mini-greenhouse so maybe i will send some both ways and you can tell us which looked the best.
also, just so you'll know...........there is a lady out in calif. who has rooted cuttings available on gw.

Ocean Springs, MS(Zone 8b)

Anne, if you are not interested in the Achimenes cuttings, I can send postage.

Thanks.

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm sorry Stetch I got so excited by the iochroma, sure that would be fine. In looking at the plantfiles it says that they are a zone 11a plant. Is that so? It's still ok, I would just put it in a pot as opposed to the ground. What are the ph requirements for it?

Anne

Ocean Springs, MS(Zone 8b)

Anne, I will send you some cuttings tomorrow, just cut them below a leaf node and put them in water and in a couple of weeks you will have roots on them. I pot my up in regular potting mix. Keep them inside until spring and if you want you can put them in the ground but not in direct sun, your weather is similar to mine. I keep some in pots and put some in the ground. Next fall when the foliage dies back you can dig them up and there will be little rhizomes that look like little pine cones, save those to plant for the following year.

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

k, sounds like a deal. As I said above, I will be in the yard digging next weekend. And things should go out on Mon. the 5th.

Anne

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

Anne...if you have any more that you could bring to the CS roundup I bet mom and dad would like some. I think we got one from you already and it is doing great.

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

one for postage? my poor garden is a disaster due to drought but i love blackberries

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

Not a prob. I will try to get all these written down before Fri. Have to give my sweetie this honey do list for Sat.

Anne

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

anne, the iochroma are on their way.

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

woo hoo, I'm so excited. I've wanted one of these for a year now.

Anne

Ocean Springs, MS(Zone 8b)

Anne, I mailed the Achimenes cuttings today, should get them in a couple of days.

Thanks,

Vi

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

So cool, I will get the boxes ready and hopefully get everything mailed out Mon. I'm not working that day so shouldn't be a prob.

Anne

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

how much you think postage will be?

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

I don't know. Depends on the number of plants you want and on the box that I can get. Shouldn't be that much. I'll let you know Mon.

Anne

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

okay what ever you send is okay. a few plants will be great as i want balckberries. we have wild ones here and they are bitter. ewww so a couple of plants will be fine with me. thanks

Ocean Springs, MS(Zone 8b)

Anne, did you get the cuttings ok.

Vi

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

Yes I did they were waiting on me when I got in last night. Thank you. My digger is ill today so I'm going to attempt to get them done myself in the morning.

Anne

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

how about the iochroma? and by the way, which cuttings looked the best.......the ones inside the baggie or the ones outside the baggie?

Cocoa Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

I will mail the white ginger tomorrow.

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

Mama, the ones outside. Though the truth is that the cats knocked over my glass with the cuttings so it may be an unfair judgement. I'm going to just plant them today.
Mittsy, that's great.

To all: My digger was ill yesterday and though he's on his way here (he lives abt. 2 hrs away) he's still pretty weak. So I'm about to go out and do the shovel work as best I can. Hopefully to get them out in the mail tomorrow.

Anne

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

Ok gang, I got them all dug and my honey got here early enough to help me box them up. I'm off work tomorrow and will be able to take them to the p.o. in the morning. Will come back on and post postage tomorrow for those doing for postage.

Anne

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

oh, reeeeally! you are saying that UPON ARRIVAL the ones outside the baggie looked better? doesn't matter that your kitty knocked them over after they got there. i was just wanting to know which looked the best when you opened the box.

Pawling, NY(Zone 5b)

AuntAnne, are there any blackberries left?? I would love to get some cutting if I'm not too late.. Unfortunately, I don't have much left at this point unless you're interested in an aloe plant. All the rest are already gone. Please let me know. Thanks.

Cocoa Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

I mailed the White Butterfly Ginger rhizome this morning. Please let me know when you receive it.

Rockaway, NJ(Zone 6a)

ohhh me too - I love berries. If there are any left, and you're going to dig them up again (I know you already did some), I'd love to see if I can get some.

I have Chocolate Mint in spades, but not much else save some random veggie seeds I harvested from store-bought vegetables.

I should buy some flower seeds just so I have stuff to trade with people LOL

Sevidra
Trust me I have more than I need for many years to come. And I need to take a picture of the blackberry vines. You'd be doing me a favor tor call all your friends and neighbors to bring shovels. Dad has never cared for the vines. Just picked and let them go. There are years upon years of vines out there. The ones I dug up are ones that were growing out into the yard. They are growing in the garage. So in answer to everyones question: trust me I have PLENTY!!!!! lol

Anne

Pawling, NY(Zone 5b)

Sweet Anne, do you want an aloe for the blackberry then?? I have aloe plants if you are interested. I also have plenty of seeds like Sevidra, both flowers, veggies and herbs.. Please let me know what you're interested in...

Lindy

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

ah no, i have experience with aloe. The only plant that I know of that will cross a sidewalk and take up root on the other side. lol Will look up the sevidra though
