Pelle invited me to start this thread, and my first thought was "Yikes," because everyone here takes such awesome pictures of the gorgeous birds they've spotted. I must admit, I do lurk here a lot, and really don't input too terribly often, but hopefully that'll soon change. :) Anyway, we started from here, where there was an amazing conversation going on about handfeeding wild birds, and then Pelle lucky to have all the great birds in her yard today -- including the nuthatches ... http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/782930/
It has been rainy and windy for this entire week, so I thought I'd take a look back on the pictures I've taken this year, and the one I'm posting is kinda special to me. Back in May, I was doing some gardening, and noticed something that didn't look quite right in the bird feeder, and to my horror, I spotted a sparrow that was stuck in the feeder. How the heck did he ever get in there in the first place? So, I'm panicking, the bird is panicked, but, I got my wits about me, and was able to set this guy free.
DAILY PICS VOL. 27
LOL, When I first saw the thumbnail I thought the photo was sideways.
Thanks for starting the new thread indiana! :-)
I've had this happen myself several years ago where a bird was stuck in a feeder.
Well, pelle's request came to me as a pleasant surprise to me to start Vol.26 and I really enjoyed being part of it and I felt the same like you Indiana_lily! I had to have a real dig at my pictures to be able to grab a few 'postable' ones.
Here is a hawk on my neighbour's tree. My new FZ8 [Panasonic] took this pic with a 12x zoom a couple of months back.
Great pic!
He's a beauty Dinu!
I'm glad you're liking your Panasonic FZ8 so much, Dinu! You take such awesome pictures!! Hopefully, I'll be able to learn how to use mine almost as well as you use yours!
Um, did I mention that I'm afraid of birds, but trying to get over it? :) So, since I was the only one home at the time, rescuing that bird was uh, interesting. LOL!!
Thanks for asking me to start the thread, Pelle. It was fun.

Heres a Song Sparrow I saw a few days ago when the sun actually made a brief appearance.

Do you see the Hawks very often Dinu?
LOL, that would have been funny to see adel !
Dinu, I shal be in Karachi on Saturday, I see lots of Eagles there, I will try to photograph them, haven't been down in India yet.
Oh seemama, we would LOVE to see any pics your able to get! Pelle :-)
Okay at this point I'll do just about anything to keep this thread on the top above the old one.
Has anyone else on the East started noticing that their seeing alot of
Grackles, Cowbirds and Starlings?
I saw 1 Starling yesterday (probably scoping out my place, grrr).
Lots of Grackles today. Pelle :-)
None here yet. Nothing for the past two weeks but cardinals, sparrows and doves. And not many of them. We have had misty rain solid for the past four days. That is unusual for us this early.
Same weather here Frank plus its very chilly out.
You know, I miss my cowbirds. Where are they? Oh, and I guess I need to keep my eyes open for the Junco's too.
I have a few Gold finches that have come back. Guess they went on vacation for a bit. :)
I had 1 male cowbird here today probably hanging w/ the Grackle crew. :-)
I am seeing loads of red winged blackbirds. I have noticed a few cowbirds traveling with them. I also have seen a few grackles here and there but not the migrating hoards I usually see. Maybe the big grackle flocks are still to come.
edited to add, Wow indiana!! I wonder how that sparrow got in there?! I guess where there's a will there's a way lol.

I haven't seen to many Red-winged Blackbirds around.
Had a Sharp-shinned Hawk swoop so fast through the yard today. So amazing to watch them turn direction of flying on a dime.

We've got Red-tailed hawks around here. Didn't seem to be as many this year as last, and the bunny population seemed to have exploded this year because of it. About 3 weeks ago, my daughter and I were standing outside looking at about 6 - 7 just circling our house, it was quite the sight! We made sure to take our little chihuahua/terrier mix inside, in case these guys were hungry! Anyway, he's a not so good picture of one of them....
seemama,
So you are visiting Karachi? Any plans down south to our part of India? You'll find lots of birds in that area for sure.
pelle,
Yes, hawks, eagles and kites are very common and they are found making circles in the sky and it is just a pleasure to see them do that almost non-stop!
Here is a pic of a Kite I took about a month ago. Sunshine and blue sky helped me in this shot. It was on the move quickly and I had to follow it within the frame - which was a bit tough. But am happy it ended this way.
Dinu
Nice Kite Dinu
Beautiful catch Dinu!
Indiana Lily, That picture is of a Turkey Vulture and the 6 or 7 you saw were most likely of the same. No need to worry about your dog. They ( the vultures) only eat carrion.
Jimbo
Thanks for the sound of the Song Sparrow pelle, fancy that, it has quite a repertoire. Nice pic, you had sun briefly? Lucky! Haven't seen it here for 3 days solid now.
LOL adelbert, are you trying to say the bird turned blue with cold? We will have matching colours then! I can see those Pelicans floating on a water spray, they have to get their fun somehow!
Dinu, great Hawk pic. I would have been happy with the Kite pic too, flying birds are not easy to get!
Indiana, I am pleased to see some not-so-good shots, it's actually quite good, just high up! It must have been a sight to see all those Hawks circling, perhaps they have a rotational system of leaving their food stock to breed ready to feed their young later in the season, or they could move from area to area in search of it and you have the goodies.
Does this mean I need to find a not-so-good pic? The first one I took last time we had sun, a Blue Tit was on the edge of the clipped leylandii. As I took the pic a Dove flew in, it flew out, got both!
Edited to say, OK they're not Hawks, good story anyway!

Thank you Jimbo. Actually, Pelle told me this last night, but I never got around to editing my post.
I didn't realize we had Turkey Vultures in my neighborhood. They kinda give me the creeps. Shoot, so now I cannot call my daughter's dog "Hawk Bait" anymore? We do actually have red-tailed hawks too, though. They like to screetch when you enter my street, it's the wildest thing.
Yes, I am seeing an increase in the dreaded starlings in my area. My banging tools are ready as is my electric blowing machine to scare them off. Great pics everyone! GM
Dinu, I leave Florida tomorrow morning for Karachi, I have seen lots of birds flying overhead there, first time I went I saw lots of green parrots, but haven't seen them again, lady next door keeps exotic birds and has a peacock which pops in over the wall. We are going to visit my mum in law, but not coming to India, my husband was born in Dehli - pre partition days, I know he would love to go back one day.
But I will be able to see some cricket while I am there - that I am looking forward to.
Seemama,
That's wonderful! The bird and the information, both.
Cricket.... Aaaah. So you have already known my other interest! I wish you the best of times on your tour - hope we can catch up on the action live from Karachi!!
Best wishes. "See U Mama"!!
Dinu
I am a seema- m- a and Cricket is the only game to play - if only America had stayed in the colonies a little longer we could have taught them too. Alas no computer over there, so I am out for a month, I shall miss seeing all the new birds, the colours of the birds in USA is just amazing, I have the cardinals who are brilliant red, and the blue birds really are blue - I enjoy this forum so much and can't wait to see all the different species. See you all again in Decenmber
You might meet our DG friend "gumlla" who is also from Pakistan. Why not meet him over there as he is also a very keen gardener.
Okay Seema.... [I was just bading good bye to rhyme your screen name there].
This Mynah was looking down from the top of our house, at something in a very very funny manner! I laughed at this picture.
Dinu
See you all again in December
Have a nice trip!
