When Are You Planting Bulbs This Year?

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

oooohhhhh, Victor.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Couldn't stop myself in time.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

GROOOOAAAAAAAAN!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Normally I would not mind hearing women 'oooohing' and groaning.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Zzzzzzzzzz....

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

But not snoring - my wife does enough of that.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Ha!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

You asked for that, Victor!!
Good one, Harper!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I think it was her relaxing golden amber room having its effect.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

It's 'Amber Glow', and actually it has me energized to paint more rooms in the house. There's plenty!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Of rooms or paint, Harper?

I planted the stuff I can reach or that's my personal choice. I bought some itty bitty crocuses to plant in the "Garden Annex" - a spot where DH plants whatever he likes, whenever he sees it. A random effect, to say the least. DD#1 picked out all the crocuses early this summer (?) when B & B were having their pre-season sale. But will she help plant them? Nooooooooo.

x, Carrie

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You're welcome to come and paint my house Harper. I hate painting.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I heard that, Victor. So, are you saying that we can have a painting RU at your house??????

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Depends - RU really willing to paint?

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Plenty of rooms Carrie! ...and outdoor furniture... little do-hickeys... plenty to paint. Victor, I'll come and help, but I won't do it all. You gotta help too!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Absolutely, Victor.
It's not the painting I mind ~ it's the clean-up afterwards!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Candyce, what are you doing up?

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Couldn't sleep!
Must be an age thing.
Got all my morning chores done, though!!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I don't mind the cleaning up after painting as much as I mind the preparing: moving furniture, laying dropcloths, vacuuming, washing walls, spackling, sanding, washing again, priming...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I hate it all and that's why I generally don't do it!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

And Harper, if you DON'T do that stuff, it comes out so badly you may as well not have painted.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

It's true Carrie. I'm a perfectionist about it too. I like to make sure the walls are completely flat before I start. No holes or lumps. Sometimes the thought of all the work just makes me go back to sleep... or onto the computer.

It reminds me when I lived in FL. I had 9 big swimming pools to keep clean. At night I was a painter and cleaned condos. There was 900 condos. When someone moved out I had to go in. This sounds pitiful.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Most of us have had jobs like that at one point or another!

Mid-Cape, MA(Zone 7a)

I planted out a bunch of tulips today from the WFF "Stretch Tulips" collection--planted 'em in the dahlia-holes I had just created. I think (hope) that the term "stretch" refers to the long duration of blooms, not to the height of the tulips. . . would be sort of scary to see tulips as tall as dahlias. "Little Shop of Horrors" comes to mind.
Now I have to find time to get those 100 narcissus in. . . man, it's gettin' colder.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I am getting close to starting the mad bulb planting process with DH and his trusty electric auger. Now if he could just hit oil when he is drilling away, I could better afford my bulb extravagances. I have not done the count yet for this years foolishness, but it was a delicious amount. And I did just order more from Bleek on Tuesday as his sale prices are extraordinary. I wish I had left my dahlia holes to plant in, good idea CCgardener. Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Did my bulbs today. Not many this year - about 35 Daffs.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Do we have a link for Bleek? x. C

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

thanks!

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

Be sure to dmail him for other bulbs you might want, as he could have what you're looking for at a very good price! :-)

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I got my invoice from Bleek and Ingrid. My new order will be mailed on the 12th. Such a deal. I was afraid to ask what else he might have left because I would buy more and I can't even contemplate planting more this bulbs this fall. I spent the morning winterizing my dahlias. It seems odd to be digging up some and planting others at the same time. Someone (capecodgardener) suggested planting tulips in the holes that the dahlias have been dug out of. I wasn't smart enough to do that. Maybe next year. Patti

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

What do the numbers mean? 10-11, 7-9, etc. Not zones, maybe sizes? cms?

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

sizes

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

yep, I asked bleek and that's what he said.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Cape Cod, What a great idea about using dahlia wholes. Imagine how many bulbs Al could easily plant.

Harper, You do hickeys??

Mid-Cape, MA(Zone 7a)

Dave47, I had encouragement in this from a previous thread on the dahlia forum.

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/784771/

So for the last few days I've been pulling up my dahlia tubers, throwing some compost into the holes plus a bit of Bulb Booster, and switching in a bunch of tulip bulbs. The idea is that I just reverse the process after the bulbs have ripened and when the ground is warm enough for my dahlias to go back in.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

This is great stuff!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You treat the Tulips as annuals, Emily?

Mid-Cape, MA(Zone 7a)

Actually yes, Victor, I am planning to do that next year with those tulips that I plant in my dahlia "holes"--though in the responses that Suzy (Illoquin) wrote in the thread I referenced above , you will see how she keeps recycling her bulbs quite successfully.
