When Are You Planting Bulbs This Year?

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

On Christmas Day, pirl???
What? You didn't get enough presents to unwrap, you had to unwrap daffodils?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

It was warm out and I was employed so I had to make use of any time that I could to get the job done.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Well now ~ THAT makes perfect sense, then.
It also makes for frozen fingers, but I bet you enjoyed the fact that you did all that Christmas work when they all bloomed a few months later.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

No frozen fingers. I wore a sweatshirt and slacks so it had to be around 50 to 60 degrees and, yes, that spring was glorious.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

oh - brr.
well, that's another chunk of bulbs in. off to take a spanish test.
do you plant allium now? what about oxalis? i'm confused.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Yes to the allium. I don't know about the oxalis.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I don't think oxalis is hardy around here... unless we're talking about the dreaded clover in my grass. I think that's hardy on Pluto.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

this kind has pink flowers and blooms in the summer. the "bulbs" are hairy-looking like coconut fibery.

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

Half a dozen or so crocus vernus came up this morning.

Or so they thought. I shoveled more dirt on them.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

my uva vulpis (which i FOUND! AT LAST! at HD in north haven - YAY!!!) were mostly sprouting. but i planted them and i will hope for the best.
i can't believe that after searching high and low for months HOME DEPOT 6 miles from here had the d*** things.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Pirl, Christmas Eve with the miners helmet??

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Great news for you, Amy. Of course, if you had gone looking for them at HD they'd have been sold out.

Dave - no head lamp needed. It was a bright and sunny day.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

amethystsm I am glad you found your uva vulpis I planted just a few this fall too, but I have never seen one so I hope it like I love other Frits. I love the common name Fox's grape.

Brent and Becky has 50% off today. I was bad, but tried to limit them to ones I could just pop in with the dibble. But a few Narcissus that were some of the more expensive ones left just jumped into my cart. Bulb Badness. Patti

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Patti - I just went to their site and there's a message at the top that the catalog is closed for 2007. I'd love to have a link to the sale. Thanks.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Pirl, try this and hit remaining stock. Patti http://www.brentandbeckysbulbs.com/spring/bulbs.php

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Patti!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

410 bulbs later.........

Thanks so much!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Pirl, you were quick and almost as bad as me (430). I hope I don't get an email from Becky saying they had already sold out. I am holding off entering them in my journal until later today just to be safe. I hate deleting entries. Patti

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I still may increase some of the smaller numbers to larger ones. We'll see. Then, of course, just in case they're out of something ...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - I feel inadequate - only bought 200! Thanks Patti!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Victor, your reputation far makes up for the puny order. Patti

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Oh no! Victor probably ordered the ones I wanted!

I had them all on the screen, minimized the page so I could check my intended planting spots, and the one second power outage wiped out everything. I guess it's as good a way as possible to spend another hour.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

It's rainy and very windy here right now, so I suppose that the power will flicker once or twice for us as well. Nope! No online shopping for me today. I'd probably end up with double orders. (Would that be a bad thing?)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Patti. Wow - the bar is pretty high when 200 is 'puny'!

All of mine will go in my large boxes, and get transplanted in Spring. A lot easier - especially this time of year! Don't have to deal with clay soil, rocks or roots.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I grew quite a few lilies in pots, Victor. Maybe that can inspire you to buy a few more. Acapulco is beautiful but Lilum Pink Perfection is GLORIOUS.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I think I have Acapulco. PP is nice - don't know how I missed it! I didn't order any Lilies - sacrilege!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Oh no!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Think I can still add to the order?

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Victor, are you ordering lilies? If so you got a lot. Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I just added a couple. Pink Perfection and x Amarcrinum.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I think I'm going to take next week off work and get my bulbs in the ground. This weather isn't turning out like last fall and winter. It's cold and getting colder!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I just replied to an email and said the exact same thing, Harper. Last fall spoiled us!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

True, but up until about ten days ago, this Fall was very nice as well!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Yeah. It's chilly, and there's about 6" of snow predicted for Sunday evening through till Monday morning. That's much earlier than last year.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Yes, it was nice up until Thanksgiving. Then that cold, bitter wind came and blew all the leaves off the trees and took the warmth with it. Wish I had gotten out when it was still beautiful.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I know what you mean, Harper. But each time I go out, I sigh, because my gardens are all cold and brown! I can't wait until Spring! And, just knowing that the gardens will be all snow covered soon, well, it almost brings me to tears! Planning and planting and wishing and hoping and crossing my fingers brought me so much pleasure last season.

Mid-Cape, MA(Zone 7a)

Quoting:
But each time I go out, I sigh, because my gardens are all cold and brown!

Candyce, I feel your pain! I feel so ambivalent about this time of year, because I recognize that many of my plantings MUST go dormant to have their annual glorious spring display. . . but, but, but. . .they look so miserable now! Sad brown foliage, curled up or flattened or missing entirely. I want to pull a nice big blanket up over my plants. Guess that's what Mother Nature does with snow-cover--except we don't usually get ALL that much here on the Cape, so things just look. . . brown.

Quick, hand me those seed catalogs.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That's why every garden needs evergreens!

(Zone 5b)

Just scored some 75% + off tulip bulbs at Agway yesterday...just kept putting it off, but since they had a BIG sign that said 50% off, I went in to find them even better priced. Took home 2 full grocery bags full- 330 in all for $25, and NICE sized bulbs!
Will share them between our business's Adopt-a-Spot and my house, but MUST get them in the ground this weekend for certain! Not frozen yet, but weather is turning fast. I'm in Z5, and we're at 40-ish now during the day.
Hopefully I'll glean nice rewards from my cheapo investment.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Wow! Two big bags for $25? Nice going birdsnb.

Victor, I'm slowly building my evergreens, but it's too slow! Wish they'd grow up already.

Ha! Emily, I thought you were going to say, "Quick! hand me the tissues." Seed catalogs are better.
