When Are You Planting Bulbs This Year?

Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Hello everyone.

Just curious. Has anyone started planting their bulbs yet?? It's been so unusually warm here, that I've been holding off. Do you think I should wait until the temperatures are consistently lower, or would it be okay to plant them now? It's still in the high 60s and 70s here.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

The only bulbs I planted earlier were my fall crocus. I just planted allium and cyclamen since it was going to be getting colder the next couple days. I'm still waiting for another bulb order to come in.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hi Karen,

Looks like it will be getting cooler over the next few days. Anyway, I have planted them in the past when it was still a bit warm. Never had a problem. They may start to send a up a bit of foliage but it died back when the cold comes and did not affect the Spring performance.

(Zone 4a)

I already planted miine over a month ago....

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

I planted Iris roots a few weeks ago. I still have daffodils to go. I am ready to skip winter and go straight to spring....

Van Etten, NY(Zone 5a)

I planted daffodils today. Frost warnings for the weekend.

Mid-Cape, MA(Zone 7a)

I've got 100 daffs and 50 tulips that are awaiting their planting--which will happen in five days when I return from a trip. Then I just have to find places for them!!

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

i will plant bulbs in the next 2 weeks or so, when DH at last gets home and can help me!!!

(Zone 4a)

Hey Victor that is good to know with my bulbs - even though it was warm here I don't see anything coming up (thank goodness)...I hope they stay down till next spring!!

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

I usually wait until end of October or early November. I only have a few lilies this year.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Either today or next week.
I have:
50 Daff's (Rijnveld's)
60 species tulips (little beauty & alba coerulea)
10 darwin tulips (appledorn)
15 allium (caeruleum & mars)

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

We FINALLY got all of ours put in this weekend ~ in the rain, no less.
Let's see ....
about 200 daffodils
about 250 crocus
only about 30 allium
and about 100 tulips ..

It took just a couple of hours and a couple of changes of wet clothing, but we can say 'done'!

Westbrook, CT(Zone 6a)

Last week. 50 Fragrant Rose Daffs, 200 crocus, 200 misc small bulbs. 50 more going in today and yes, let's say done and done.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Now it's mulch time!!!

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

went to lowe's yesterday - still only 25% off.
i'm wondering when the heck i bought bulbs there last year at 50% off!

and why can't i find a single late WHITE tulip to go with my queen of nights?
all the white ones are early or mid, i swear!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Bluestone Perennials has 50% off bulbs. Not too many though.

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

Planted crocus vernus three weeks ago and it's just started to come up but the frost last night should solve that problem

Today's plantings:

Scilla siberica alba 250 (Van Engelen's were out of blue! I waited too long)
Muscari Valerie Finnis 25
Crocus sieberi Tricolor 200
Crocus tommasinianus roseus 100
Crocus vernus 'Negro Boy'.50
Galanthus nivalis Flore Pleno 10

Species tulips, galanthus elwesii, chionodoxa forbesii, eranthis hyemalis, puschkinia libanotica alba, more crocus, more muscari and a couple other things I forget left to put in. Did have a plan, I think, in my head for what the lawn should look like next spring but now I have no idea. Not mixing things up much and trying to make things flow, Whatever it looks likes, its going to be coming back for a while. 1,850 bulbs have arrived and the sales are yet to come.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow! You've been busy David - look forward to the photos next Spring!

Winamac, IN

My sister just dug up some of her spring bulbs, and I was wondering if I have to cover them with Mulch or something when I bury them this weekend. I have dutch hyacinths, tulips, and muscari.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Yes. Do that, portiaraylee. Plant them. Water them. Mulch them.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I still have not bought any. Procrastination!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Just got my last order today of some tulips and daffs.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Finally ordered some daffs.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

'Way to go, Victor!
What kind of daffs did you order?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

'Money Maker', 'Calgary' and 'Rip Van Winkle'.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

I think next to DL's and Hostas, I love my daffs. This year I got 160 King Alfreds, 20 Actaea, 10 Hoop Petticoats, and 50 Mount Hood. I also, gulp, bought the Gigantic Allium...it hurts even typing, but I spent 6.99 a bulb...ahhhh...the agony of it. And I bought 10. LOL. I grabbed a couple of bags of species tulips, I believe Tarda, and the yellow...can't remember. That's it with bulbs...unless I see them for 75% off...lol.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

The purple Allium Thom? Deerresistantplants.com has the white giants for about $13 for three.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

i want species tulips (anything but yellow) but no one seems to have any!
i got my 1st daffodils this year - thalia, which are small and white and have multiple flowers.
i planted 2 kinds of anemones last year, and didn't get a single one.
sigh.
i want more of the frittilaria i had last year, uva vulpis, but haven't been able to find them anywhere in person or online.
Still looking for a white single late tulip.

Mid-Cape, MA(Zone 7a)

Amy, is this a white tulip that you might like? Dutch Gardens has a so-so rating in the Garden Watchdog, but I have ordered from them successfully in the past.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

ooh - thanks. i'll check it out!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I love daffoldils, crocus, and tulips. So, we planted over 500 bulbs this year. It should be interesting to see where each one 'took' and will bloom for spring. I know that I will be heartbroken if only a representative few actually sprout and bloom for us. We really didn't plan out the bulbs gardens, other than to say that we want daffodils here or lots of crocus there. Part of having our family fun for fall planting was to let Taelar take a handful of bulbs and kinda toss them. Then we planted them where they fell. Like said, it should be interesting!!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Candyce, That's what all the books suggest you do.
Until the rain stopped me I was planting daffs today. The vast majority of them doubles. Thank you Brent & Becky's
Amy, Check them out for species tulips. I got Little beauty anf the white one with purple center (something like oracula curril...) Or John Scheepers in CT has them.

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

Sale on species tulips here

http://www.bloomingbulb.com/CartDefault.asp?Category=3529

50 Red Riding Hood Tulips & 50 white species crocus for ten bucks and change.

Tulip Saxatellis $14 a hundred.

Crocus are as low as 4 cents. 6 cents for tommies.

My first order from this company. Looks OK in Garden Watchdog.

That company and other sales are being discussed on this thread:

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I like the quality of the John Scheepers bulbs. We got a few, just to see how they will perform (both the blooms and the company). The bulbs looked fantastic, and spring will let us know how the bloos will do.

Mid-Cape, MA(Zone 7a)

David_Paul, thanks for the link to BlomingBulb.com. I didn't know about them before--and thanks for giving the Sale-Bulb thread link, as well. Great info.

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

Hope the prices aren't too good to be true, CapeCodGardner.

Mixed species crocus are now two cents each in lots of 1,000:

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Wow!
But, perhaps they are bulbs from a couple of seasons ago? I'd be wondering, too!!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Candyce, I've bought from John Scheepers before. The spring outcome is always fantastic with their bulbs. You can pretty much tell what they're going to be like judging by the condition of the bulb. Well, unless you get something you didn't order. That hasn't happened to me with J.S.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

That hasn't happened to us either. And, I really like how knowledgeable their Customer Service people respond to every question in such a positive manner.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

They offered a great ground cover one time so I called and asked, 'Jeepers Scheepers, where'd you get those creepers?!'
