Street Flute-seller

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

Yesterday, I was loitering in my garden looking for some shots [I took many]. Then I noticed in the adjacent street, looking over the compound wall this boy selling flute to two boys.

The boy tests if that flute works for him. The seller blows using his knack and practice. But the buyer always gets some funny notes! I overheard that after he bought and going back, telling his friend it is not that good!

After that, he noticed my camera on the wall. I called him to come nearer to see the shots I took. He was happy to see them and requested me a copy, telling me that he would leave the city the next day as they had come from Chennai, a city 250 miles away [they would have come in a group]. Many sellers like this converge on Mysore esp. during this time which is the famous Dasara festival season. Mysore's floating population bulges at this time and they are greeted by a wonderful climate too.

Then he seemed to pose for me.

I wanted to get a print and offer to him in two days but since he was leaving, he agreed to drop his desire. It's sad that they have to do this at such a young age, but poverty in certain areas leads them to such businesses and I guess that there will be organized units operating this. The bamboo flutes are made by poor people and sold for their livelihood and that has a chain. It's a "blow and throw" toy, no one minds their low quality, but then they are cheap mostly to meet children's desires! The situation behind it is sad, but very true.
