Thanks Cindy............I learned a lot with your post....................now i can get started with my leaves......................

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

So MUCH to catch up on!
Cindy, what an AMAZING epi that is! I can't believe you could part with that...I would have cried *lol* When and if you get haircuts of it, would you keep me in mind?
Your pictures are simply breath taking!
I'm trying to be patient with my cuttings and give them time to root. I have not looked at my leaves for 2 days now...I'm SO proud of myself. I'm struggling a little with some of the streps and yet others are doing fine.
I have some baby episcia stolons which I think are rooted and seem to be happy. Not alot of growth yet but they are still babies trying to put roots on. I have them in the corner of my tub in the bathroom and when hubby and I take a shower I leave both of the doors to the bathroom closed so they can soak up all the heat and humidity. They seem to be VERY happy there. This is also where a few of my other gessies live along with the Pink Princess Philo and she's putting out leaves every 3rd or 4th day.
I will try to post some pictures today after work before the Red Sox spank the Rockies again tonight *lmao*...GOOOO Sox! Can everyone say that together....come on Brenda.....you can do it......GOOOOO Red Sox. Once you say it for the first time it comes easier every time after that *lol*

You all have a GREAT day and I will try to get some pictures posted tonight :) Been working like mad (during the baseball game) to finish up the last doily I have to do for Christmas. SOOOO Tired today! But it's worth it *lol*

Good morning, Kim and everyone.........................sounds like you are a busy woman!!!!!!!!

Isn't that epi to die for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Thanks Cindy, those were excellent and easy to follow growing tips for the epis!! Yours are so pretty that I know you know exactly what your doing! :0) Now to see one in HD again!!

It's Rockies Kim, Goooo Rockies....and they obviously need all the cheers they can get!!! LOL

I bought a small Dibley's Crystal Ice strep from eBay and it opened it's bloom yesterday. I have a small Bristols that just bloomed also (lost the name when I potted up and could just kick myself!) and I was surprised at the difference in the size of the blooms....The Crystal Ice is small and delicate.....Both very pretty though.

Brenda..........I love purple........my favorite color plus corn yellow.............

I know darn well that I should be cutting off these blooms before they appear........so that all the energy goes into growing big Iced Strep Flamingos..............but i can't........they are too cute in bloom............

Gail, you are simply an AMAZING grower! Would you look at all the flowers in the background in your picture! Absolutely stunning!

I saw somewhere talk about a Pink Princess. Can't remember where it was, so here is as good a place as any to post mine. ;o) I brought them all in since it's gotten quite cool and the place looks like a jungle. LOL This one threw out an almost completely pink leaf as soon as it came in. There's one tiny dot of green in the middle. LOL

Rain.............she is great!!!!!!! I am just loving our mid 50's nights and daytime 80's..........my plants outside look like plants for the first time this season except for early spring.................

Thanks Gail! She should be growing up a fern pole or something, but I sort of like the random way she trails down and then angles back up. She's a non-conformist. ;o)

It has hit the 40s several times at night here, and though I think they'd probably have been fine, I had the time that particular day a few weeks ago, so I just brought them all in. We finally got some rain this week and I wish they'd been outside to get that, but I wasn't about to lug them all back outside. LOL

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

This past Monday night was 47 and Tuesday night was 43..........but it is pretty now and in the 50's at night.........makes such a difference with plants..............but this was what we call a cold front and may not get another one for a month or so.............

(Zone 1)

Woo Hoo ... we have finally gotten some cooler weather here today! I know it probably won't last long but it's only 71 degrees outside! Cloudy, drizzly and humid but the temperature makes it bearable! Especially since we've been at 90-91 during the day for months and still 80 and 81 at night! Even last night .... I got up in the middle of the night and you couldn't see out the window ... foggy because of so much moisture. It was still 80 degrees at 2:00 a.m.!! and Humid! Ugh! I would love some night time temp's in the mid to high 40's .... but want my day's to be preferably low to mid 70's!

Davison, MI(Zone 5a)

OK, I have a list of 3, maybe 4 people for the pink epi. Gail, do you want a cutting, or are you just enjoying the picture for now? If you would rather I send you the cuttings now than wait till Spring, I will ask now. Everyone let me know your preference. If she offers more than 4 cuttings, I'll take them in case there are more people interested who haven't said yet.

And thankyou everyone for the compliments, makes me feel welcome.
Cindy

(Zone 1)

Oh, am I on the list??? Please, Please! Tell me what kinds of plants you like and we can do a trade! I don't have to wait til spring if you have enough now without totally stressing your plant!

Davison, MI(Zone 5a)

Gail, how do you water the plants on that water tray with the grill? Are they wicked down thru the grill? I'm curious, I might want one of those set ups.
Cindy

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

You can order everything from Violetshowcase in Englewood, Colorado..........his catolog on line opens on Adobe Acrobat and I just phone in my order. These are called perma nest trays and then you order the 11x22 grids to fit the big perma nest trays. I love them.........I have to wick everything I grow because I am growing more than I can do!!!!! (LOL)

I go to Walmart and buy size 18 poly string for the small pots and 32 or 36 string for 4" pots..........the string can't be cotton and needs to be acrylic which is easy to find at Walmart.

The 11x22 trays are 6.50 and the grids to fit are 4.00 but they last 15 years. I just have started replacing ones I have had for many years........(I wasn't growing gessies but I was using them)

Then Violetshowcase makes the finest trays and domes for 6.50 together.......let me show you a picture......perfect for growing leaves, propagating anything small.......and also for putting baby plants which need a dome. They fit much better than the perma nest tray domes..........don't order them............

Here is a picture with new babies in it with the dome on and I didn't put the insert tray in the bigger tray.......just used blanket material with wicks...

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Remember these are NOT the perma nest trays...........these are different........

Here is the same tray with the dome that you just saw......but I put the insert tray in there..........without a dome........it has some baby streps in there.......some leaves with babies that haven't been separated yet........just a good versatile tray , insert and dome for me.

Cindy: I am actually dying for cuttings from your epi but would love to wait until spring.........I have too much growing I haven't taken care of yet..........please save me just a nice big leaf.......in the spring..thanks so much......you are too nice...........please know that I will send you something special too........called a trade...........

Gail: I swear girl, you have a regular botanical nursery right inside your house!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I do and my kids don't think it is as neat as i do!!!!!!!!! (LOL)...............everywhere they try to go to sleep there are gro lights on..............so.................Thanksgiving I am having to mistreat my baby plants by cutting back the hours a day the lights stay on.............afterall, the grands have to sleep somewhere (LOL)...............

What they don't know yet................is that next weekend my friend from Houston is coming in to go to the state convention with me..........and we are moving in from the front porch two more stands so I can add more gro lights in my bedroom................or wheverever i can find a couple of spots left over..................I keep moving furniture down to the barn..................

They just visit about 3 or 4 times a year and i live here all the time by myself............they don't really care............just like to give me a hard time about all the lights on............

(Zone 1)

They may tease you Gail, but I know they are happy because you are happy! Tell them there are many, many people here on DG who are just like you. Who needs furniture?? All I would need is a chair, t.v. and a bed to sleep in .... but actually, if the chair is a recliner, I could sleep in that! Then I would have room for more light stands and plant tables and plant stands!!

Davison, MI(Zone 5a)

Gail, thankyou for sharing from you experience. It helps so much.
I just bought some acrylic yarn (chunky size). You said string, would that be in the hardware department, or would yarn work as well?
Cindy

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I hate to tell you but yarn is ok.........but not really good as it gets clogged up badly .........therefore the plant doesn't wick consistently..............

Just remember any acrylic string that comes in a roll (looks like a big toilet tissue holder size)...........use # 18 on up to 21/2" pot and 32 or 36 on bigger pots..........it is very easy to find.........I am sure the hardware store has it but I just go to Walmart..............

I only started growing gessies back in January and anything I have learned I have learned right here on DG..........I miss Snowrose..........she hasn't been around this month and she is the master teacher for all of us..............

Some people use old panty hose..........and make a wick.......it works if you want...........you don't the wick too thick though............

(Zone 1)

I have used old panty hose and it works, just takes up a lot more water and if the potting mix doesn't drain well your plants could be too wet.

I bought my polyester type twine at Wal-Mart in the hardeware department. #18 is all I found at our store ... they are always out of the #32.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

darn it..........Lin.............i even bought you one and forgot to send it to you...............will add that to my to do list..................I wondered why I had so much 32 string.............ditzy me........

(Zone 1)

Oh no Gail ... I don't need it, really! Save it for trades! You know what you could do? When you send a plant in trade that needs to be wicked, just send cuttings of the wicking material along too. I know I bought some from Bluebirds with my first order from them ... and it came in a little zip lock bag .... 5 yards. They call it Fidgidy Wicks or something like that:

http://www.bluebirdgreenhouse.com/html/supply01.htm

I have tons of the #18 that I bought at Wal-Mart and I just use two if it's for a larger pot. I haven't checked but they've probably gotten the #32. They were out the first few times I checked for it. That's why I ended up buying a few spools of the #18.

Davison, MI(Zone 5a)

Thanks Gail & Lin, I'll get some next time out.
