(Zone 1)

Very Pretty .... as usual, Gail! I am loving Ramblin Spots, Amethyst, Buckeye Candy Kisses and that very last one you show!

Can't wait to see your pic's tomorrow!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Someone sent that Amethyst leaf to me...........i can't remember ever seeing that bloom.......but I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got a little carried away growing Ramblin Spots..........will have to get you one.......after all, I think I only have about 10 of her! (because I love her)..........

You will be disappointed in the display they had in Austin........i just wanted to go around and fertilize everything one more time (LOL)..............and all the gesneriads i bought......not one was in bloom.............they didn't offer any in bloom...........just small ones........which is ok but not pretty pictures..............

will show the display ones, though....tomorrow....

(Zone 1)

LOL Gail ... I can just picture you with a little watering can (and fertilizer) going from table to table watering all those plants! You could have put on a little apron and maybe a bonnet and some gloves and everyone would have thought you were working!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

No one has ever called me "Grace"...........Lin (LOL)..........more like a bull in a china cabinet............As you will see tomorrow, they are all so delicate looking like they need some more leaves on them...................but I can grow seeds.....alll my baby streps (a whole tray full came from some seed SnowRose sent me)............

Here is what I have to look forward to after and only after I get the rest of my boxes out tomorrow that i promised people 2 weeks ago..........
these are those seeds from that guy in Brazil.........lots of work ahead........

Thumbnail by gessiegail
(Zone 1)

Wow! That is the Brazil seeds??? Names please! I have sprouts from the Seemania sylvatica and I'm praying they will grow up! They are sooo very tiny. I sowed seeds from Episcia 'Strawberry Patch' (that I got in a trade) and knocked the container sideways earlier today .... I sure hope they are going to be okay. I planted the other brazil seeds just recently so it's gonna be awhile before I see anything from them I'm sure.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I will write them down tomorrow, Lin...............some of mine didn't come up at all.......(only one solo pot and I already have the plant.......so that is good)

Seeds really excite me......once I get these seedlings going, if they make it........i want to order again from him............his seeds seem to be so much better and fresher than the ones from the gesneriad society.............

I was so upset when a friend dropped my strep seeds............to the ground......but I am going to still get about 20 good ones...........so they ought to make it.........

********what is embarrassing is that i don't even know what i ordered.....half of them..........

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Gail your violets are beauties!! I know those little seedlings are going to be a lot of work to divide but that is just so neat to have all those wonderful and different plants growing from seeds that you planted!!!!

~Brenda

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I just let my interests bounce around kind of like my own personality (LOL)............I get tired of one plant and find another to get totally obsessed with...........next it is going to be hoyas and begonias................

Tomorrow i can't even unpack my luggage until I get yours, Nan's, Katymac's and Cedarnest's boxes off...........I may have to tie myself down (LOL).............and I need the space so badly..............

I always love your choice of whatever you are growing, Brenda........especially love your choices of avs ...........so delicate and airy............

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

I'm going to love my new AV trailers that will come from you!! I know what you mean about switching around with favorites. The streps remain at the top of the list for me can't beat those plentiful blooms, then it has to be the hoyas, the thick leaved ones have me hooked! I'm loving the trailing AV's I have and am going to be getting :))) ......but everything else runs in cycles! Well maybe it's not cycles so much as how I do with them, if I can't keep them looking good and happy then they are not going to be favorites for long!! LOL

Speaking of getting out some fertilizer I need to get over to my DD with some!! I gave her a Ramblin Spots awhile back and put it in a self watering pot making it as easy as possible for her. Well I saw it this weekend and the poor thing is so anemic looking that I might have to bring it home and nurse it awhile!! I doubt she'd even miss it as she feels I "force" my plants off on her! LOL

~Brenda

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

That is exactly what i do with my daughters...............give them a plant until it looks a little wimpy and wants to come home to be nursed..............it works great that way and satisfies all of us (LOL)

I will probably stay hooked on trailers for a while...........

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

I was originally bitten by the hoya bug when I first got into growing plants and now that I have discovered gessies have decided to part with SOME of the hoyas. There are still some that when I go around making the "tradeable" list that always get crossed off and have managed to still live here. I am REALLY loving this who new world of gessies and it means that I will have to repot my entire Crown of Thorns collection and put them in "community" pots rather than the "fancy" take up too much room pots *lol* I'm going to see how this winter goes with the streps and see how much they like it here. It's a real experiment that's for sure. Not only am I new to streps, I'm growing in winter...in Maine. So if they do well, I KNOW they are the plant for me *lol*
I'm very happy that I have been able to part with a few of my hoyas already as it has made a big difference in the amount of light that comes in. It's not that I didn't enjoy growing them it's just that they get SO BIG and really don't have the chance to flower like they should here. I need things that flower :) Everything I'm reading about streps, episcia, chairita's etc. really seems to be something I enjoy so I think I have found the family I belong in *lol*. I have some HUGE plants but they have great sentimental value and I can't part with them so I have to work around them (grams easter cactus, christmas cactus, etc.).
I LOVE MY PLANTS!!! They truly are my babies *lol*
My family has come to accept them as members of the family I think *lol*

hehehe...if it ever came right down to it? I believe I'd get rid of Hubby before I got rid of all my plants....but, he knows better than to ever give me that ultimatum...lol

Davison, MI(Zone 5a)

I used to grow african v. from seed. It was so fun to look for what color, and lf. variegation they would develope. Of course I wanted one of each variety when they bloomed. I expecially like the trailers, but only had blue.

I'm thinking of trading for a trailer probably in the Spring as I have plenty of new things to learn how to grow for now.

Love the pictures.

Cindy

(Zone 1)

Welcome Cindy! I know you will love it here on the AV forum! So many really friendly and generous people! I only have one trailer that I got in one of my very first trades here on DG and I love it. I don't know why I haven't gotten more trailers ... but I know I will be adding to my collection in the spring!

You should join in on our Bingo games each month .... lots of great prizes and so much fun!

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Kim there is not a doubt in my mind that you can grow Streps in Maine. If I can grown them here in Idaho you can grow them in Maine. It will just be a little trial and error at first!! And now that you have them hidden behind your plant stand you can relax a bit. LOL You obviously have a green thumb as seen by your good results with all your other plants inside and out, your just on a learning curve right now.

Yes Cindy, you'll need to come play bingo with us next month, good prizes and fun chatting! I planted some mini AV seeds about three weeks ago and I'm starting to see a little bit of green sprout! Any tips or should I just leave them be?

~Brenda

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

2. Sinningia piresiana
3. Sinningia Carodsa marjera

Welcome aboard a new gesneriad fan!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have fun growing..........I have never tried to grow avs from seed................sounds fun though

Thumbnail by gessiegail
(Zone 1)

Whew! I am exhausted just from reading your list, Gail .... Wow! That's lots of seeds you've sown there and the babies look fabulous! I have two little Chirita Tamiana plants and one is getting ready to bloom! I am watching every day for that flower to open ... any day now! I can't wait to see all of your little ones grow up to see what they will look like as adult plants and oh wow .... look forward to seeing those blooms!

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

GREAT growing Gail!
Those are some VERY happy and healthy looking babies! Congratulations!!
Awesome Achievement Girlfriend!! (high five)!

Davison, MI(Zone 5a)

I didn't grow the mini's, and thought the standards & trailers were tiny enough. Too long ago to remember, except I didn't have a greenhouse environment at all. Just grew them in my little tiny living room under lights until they were ready for the next step according to the seed packet from Parks seeds (can't remember what that was -probably to six packs), then to the basement under bigger lights they went. I'm sure you know more than I remember of that fun project. To me it seems riskier to propagate from cuttings than seeds, because I still remember the great success I had many years ago with af. viol. seeds.

Would you believe I am still using my same little 24" light fixture (around 25 yrs. later). Though I had to replace the bulbs once. I'm almost as attached to my little old-fashioned florescent light fixture as I am tomy plants. What a funny girl. Ijust bought a new one, but we're sending it back - it's damaged. Kinda glad, I still like the old one.

I don't know about bingo. I'll check it out some more. I love plants so you'll be hearing from me but can't hold my phone line up for long so I'll be in and out.

Pictures are so much fun. Love to see what you all grow. I'm just learning our new program todownsize my pictures for the internet. Will need some help from my husband I see already.

Be a watchin, there will be pictures on here from me any time now.........
Cindy

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I do feel like a high five.................never tried these..........once they are getting bigger, i can't wait to order from that man again.............really good fresh seed............probably most excited about the two begonias I specifically wanted and they did germinate............keep this list so you will know what you want as they grow..........

So...........the rest of the week will be spent dividing these babies..........I even asked a young girl who has a baby to bring the baby and i would pay her to help me plant up all these babies.............or...........a better idea............she can unpack my clothes, etc........and i will play with plants.....................

edited to say: come back and play with us soon cindi or cindy????????

Cindy: Look forward to seeing your pic's. You sound like me with computers ... My hubby is the computer person in this household! My laptop is giving me problems again ... can't access email and can't print from my laptop!! Grrrrrrr! Sometimes when I'm sitting here in front of the t.v. with my laptop (as I'm doing right now) I am too lazy to get up and walk into the study to the desktop machine to print something or pull up email! Looks like I will have to do just that until he can check out my laptop!

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Looks like I missed alot on pretties on this thread too...Ccino your av's are wonderful looking!

Gail..You sure do grow alot of beauties! Wow that Heatland's Lime Sherbet is sure going to look nice on my stand..hee hee that is an awesome plant as are all the others you grow.Your seed babies look so cute. You do really well with seeds!!! I am still learning when it comes to seeds...actually when it comes to anything..lol

Cindy..welcome to the av forum..Looking forward to your pics!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Nancy, if she gets broken up in shipping..............I can show you how to take her out of the pot.............cut the roots from the bottom and sink her about 1/2" down into the soil ...........she will take off again...................she is a giant plant...............

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

I have a feeling she will travel just fine gail..I will let you know..Ok I think I know what you mean...I need to do that all the time with optimara anabelle and isabelle.only the reason with them is they get such long necks..LOL..if I wouldn't do that they would easily be 2 foot tall!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

whenever mine get 'necks'.............take them out ...........chop right below and replant in a baggie...........works great..........or you can always grow new ones, too........those are the very best..............

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Do you mean you don't leave any roots on the long neck one Gail?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

no roots at all..................I will find the picture I took of the ones I did............give me a few minutes.................and will be back..........I learned from Rachel's Reflections.........

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Nancy..........I cut all the long neck off of each one (they belonged to a friend and had 1" necks on them)
I got big gallon zip lock bags, put some mix directly in the zip lock..........zipped them up trying not to touch the leaves on the plants...............here they are rooted and ready to come out and be put back in their own 4" pots..................

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Thanks Gail..I'll be here waiting...maybe done that way I can trick them into not constantly reaching for the stars...

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

OK I am going to give that a try!! How do you keep the leaves from touching the sides of the bags?..Just thought about it..do you blow air in the bags so they puff out away from the leaves?..think I got it now..thanks Gail : )

Davison, MI(Zone 5a)

Here's streptocarpus Gwen? I think

Here's Gwen & a pink one from the grocery store. This is last winters sunroom. All different now. But look at those beautiful streps. Wish I still had the pink one. My pictures worked and they're all downsized. Thanks to my sweet husband.
