I did also until I got the bright idea to put it in dishwasher...

Betty,
You put the cast iron in the dishwasher and it ruined it?

yup...not smart right..lol .. very rusty so in the garbage it went...

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Oh, Betty, wish we had been here to help! Even rusty
cast iron can be fixed and good as new again.

Some of our favorite cast iron pieces are from yard
sales, but after cleaning, have become fab again!

Thank you Wuvie...I did prime the back of one/ painted it with a scene and gave it to a friend...

Betty, the very one i used today was alittle rusted on the inside...I guess i forgot to season it before putting it away and i got a brillo pad out and got every bit of rust off of it....I have got to say that i love the iron skillets better then any other pot or pan. I have been looking for one to cook my spaghetti sauce, soups and chili's in. I have yet to find one i could afford. I have a really really old one that was my great grandmothers that my mother gave me. It is wagner ware....my my has a chicken fryer with lid that is griswold. The chicken fryer i have also has a lid and a deep chicken fryer it does not have a name on it but it is old and does have a number 8 on the bottom of it. I got it from ebay, paid under $50 for it.

I love all the ones i got, little bitty ones to the bigger ones.

Not so sure I want something that can't fit in dishwasher AND children and grandchildren say I'm the only person they know that can burn water...and rightly so...

Alamogordo, NM(Zone 7b)

I have a rule about not using anything that won't go in the dishwasher--except for my cast iron skillets! I love them and if they are seasoned properly, they are easy to clean. Food cooks so well and tastes so good in them that I don't mind washing them. Most of mine are over 30 years old.

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Bettypauze, I shuddered when I read you had thrown that skillet away. You can reseason them, and they are as good as new. I couldn't cook a lick without my skillets. I have about every size made, and some are reserved for specific cooking purposes. If you ever get the urge to throw one away again, send it to me COD!!

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

I wenced too when you threw that one away. I purchased a new Enameled Cast Iron 10" Open Round Grill Pan.. on QVC today. It has the grilling ribs in it and is red on the outside and white on the inside.
I also am lucky to have 2 dishwashers, one at the end of each arm. LOL
However I live alone. so they are seldom needed.;)

Promise/promise won't do it again..lol...will go in search of another one...think my DH used to heat it in order to season it right???

Alamogordo, NM(Zone 7b)

Yes, I think the new ones come with instruction. I just rub some shortening or oil on mine and heat in the oven when I am preheating it.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Scrubb well, I even use steel wool if I'm rescueing a 'trash skillet. Coat the skillet inside with a quality shortening like crisco. Set the pan in the qven on & up to 450º. Leave it that hot for about 30 minutes and turn off the oven.
Let the oven and pan cool undisturbed.
When cool rinse and dry.
Your skillet is seasoned.
;)

I don't heat it that high and just wipe it with a paper towel when it cools off. To prevent the rust in the first place, wash them with soap and water, dry with a paper towel and make certain they are dry by sitting on a burner. That is one thing I love about electric stovetops, just turn on high sit the skillet on it and turn off. That way I don't forget it!

Lilesville, NC(Zone 7b)

Cactus,
That is the way i do mine as well...I cooked everything from fried potatoes, friend chicken and so much more in mine....i then clean it with a brillo pad and then set it on the stove top and turn the heat on high for like 5 min and viola it's done then i just put it away. I used to put something like crisco in it, however the next time i went to use it, i had this gooey stuff in the bottom...eww so i stopped that.

Sometimes I hit is with a dab of pam spray and then wipe with a paper towel before putting away. That seems to keep the rust away and not be gooey. But my climate is very dry so we have to try to get rust or mold here!

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Any of those oils will leave that 'icky-sticky' Thats why I use the regular shortening. It does not leave the sticky stuff.

Okay, this is what we're having tonight. Sturgeon steak. Mmmm...

And I couldn't live without my cast iron.
