October Bingo Calls page 4

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

I just caught up on the thread reading from days that I had missed. I just want to say I am just appalled that ANYONE would be ugly to Eunice. She has had possibly the worst year of anyone I know. I cannot believe anyone would be cruel enough to make it any more painful for her than it has been already.

Shame on you, whomever, you are. I pray that God will turn your ugliness into compassion. What a sad, bitter, person you must be. I pray your life will improve, so that you can show love and grace to others. In His Name, I ask these things.
Janet

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Thank you, Janet................I do believe it was the straw that broke the camel's back for Eunice.................She said that it was a DGer who used a hotmail account . When Eunice got through crying, she tried to email her back and the user of the hotmail account had removed it.

(Zone 1)

It is so sad that people have to be so judgemental. Even though I know we are only human I just wish we could put ourselves in the other persons shoes for a day .... or even an hour in some instances! I know I am far from perfect and I have to give myself a good talking too quite often! I just always pray for help in trying to be a better person ... wife, daughter, sister, aunt, friend and I am always asking God to help me be less judgemental about people and situations, to try to think positive instead of negative. And, he has helped me ... I continue to be Thankful for Blessings in my life and to pray that others will be so blessed. There is so much ugliness in the world, if each one of us just took a little initiative each day to be more gentle and kind the world would be a better place. It gets so I hate reading the paper or watching the news anymore because of all the bad news .... unfortunately the media reports mostly the bad in people and not much of the good. It might be contagious if media would swap it around and have one page of the bad in the back of the paper.

Uh oh ... here I go with my ramblings again. I just am hoping that whoever wrote to Starfly with such negative comments has had a chance to think about the hurt they caused.

I'm gonna stop now.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I suppose it is hard for me to understand why someone wouldn't have the guts to come right out and talk to the person they are questioning. I have no problem with confronting someone with dignity and we usually end up being good friends.

However, creating a special account to say something that hurtful and then erasing the account before a person could reply is just evil to me. Knowing Eunice and how sweet she is........she will never tell us who did that but the person knows and Eunice knows..............but most of all God knows. Afterall, we only play really in life for an audience of ONE.

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Gail if you speak to Eunice again please tell her not to let one ignorant person keep her away from all of her true friends here on DG.The person who wrote her that email obviously has some real mental problems! One persons hatefull comments should not make her feel unloved by us all.We all miss her dearly and hope she will come back soon...

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Eunice, come back! I wanna meet you :)
We could share strep starting stories *lol*
The person that wrote to Eunice could not have been a "gardener" because I have never met a person who was a gardener that could be that cruel, unkind, thoughtless, or hateful. Everyone I have met that is a gardener has been just the opposite.
Like everyone has said above, God knows who this person is and I pray that he will help this person to understand the pain they have caused. An apology is deeply warranted but may never be given so Eunice, don't let it take you away from all your friends here. That person is only ONE small person, not the rest of us :) Come home :)

Karen, if you check in today....I'm thinking and praying for you and missing you too :)

Gail, you take good care of your son and have fun with your granddaughter. BE SURE to take care of yourself too :)

Lin, I LOVE reading your stories so if your hubby falls asleep, you can ALWAYS D-Mail me :)

Brenda, Thank you for being the Bingo Queen this month. Remember, a little to the left today :)

Nancy, I hope you have a GREAT day and thank you so much :)

Everyone, thank you for welcoming me on the AV/Gessie forum. It really feels like "home" now. Funny, it's pretty much the only forum I "hang out" at now because you have all been so kind to me.

Need some advice friends. It has been about 7 days since I put my very first leaves down. Out of anticipation, I gently scratched the perlite away from a couple of them last night to see if there was anything happening. There are no roots yet :( I have them nice and moist and not wet and they are in bright light but not direct sun and are even on heating mats and STILL no roots. Should I be concerned? I know these things don't happen overnight (like I want them to) and hubby is forever telling me "patience Kim, patience" but I want to SEE that I'm doing something right *lol* Is this normal?

I have high hopes that my Birthday babies come today. If so, I will be sure to post pictures (and take some cuttings *lol*) :)

I hope everyone has a GREAT day.
Kim

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Kim, some leaves that I've put down have taken forever to even root (like a month)... others root at once and start popping up "ears" in 4 weeks... So as long as your leaves still look good, you're doing everything right! BTW, if you used rooting hormone, skip it next time. It doesn't seem to do any harm, but from accounts here as well as my experience I think it slows the process down for AVs.

Brenda, keep that colander right where it is! I'm so excited... I got both calls yesterday! :-)

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Jill, I didn't use rooting hormone because I had printed out information on LOTS of different sites and received some GREAT advice from all the ladies here and not one of them told me to use rooting hormone so I didn't. These are strep leaves (I don't grow AV's) and they all still look nice and crisp and neon green but, NO babies yet and I want babies. After all, it's been 7 days already *lol* I know, patience, Kim, patience. OCD kicks in, I check on them 4 times a day, I talk to them, sing to them, ALMOST dance for them............and still nothing *lol*

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Oh, whoops, I missed that they're streps. I think it took even longer for my strep leaves to root! Same thing though -- as long as they're looking so good, they're doing fine, roots or not. :-)

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Good laugh for today:

Yesterday there were no boxes.......so I was like "OK, now what are you going to do?"
Then I started thinking......I know....Streps are called Cape Primrose, I have some Primrose out in the garden!
Put my shoes on and went out to see what I could find.
Lo and behold, one fresh crisp Primrose leaf that hadn't been killed by the frost.
Cut it off, brought it in and planted it like a strep leaf.
HELLO....KIM.....you truly ARE and addict! *lol*

(Zone 1)

LOL .... Kim, I think you are right .... you ARE addicted! I understand though! Every week I'm out doing yard work (getting ready to mow the lawn now) and I see stuff that needs cutting back. I cut back all the hibiscus two weeks ago and have some cuttings rooting out on the deck! I'm going to try and just ride my mower around today and not pay attention to anything else! Hah! I know that won't happen! Have to always be on the lookout for what needs a little trim!

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Kim you sound just like me when I put my first strep leaves down BUT I at least waited a month before I was poking at them. LOL I have one leave right now that I put down in June in a plastic baby food container and I can see so many roots that container is getting clogged up but it has never sent a baby up!! What's with that??

Hmmm, I was thinking of switching over to the tupperware colander for Lin today. Just because it was a wedding present and is now more than 30 years old shouldn't hinder any vibes right?? :0) It still works just fine and is my "go to" colander! How many of the rest of you have that light green tupperware colander, the same ones our mamas had??

~Brenda

(Zone 1)

:) .... My Tupperware was the Gold color cause my kitchen appliances were that Harvest Gold color of the 70's! But the Avacado green was in then too! I used my gold one for something in the garden years ago, then got a white one ... it's out in the shed with potting stuff and gets used to rinse pebbles and stuff! I use a stainless colander in the kitchen!

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

I had to wait for DH to leave for work (he's getting a late start as it was 24 degrees this morning and they are working outside) before I could take the latest picture!! You'll notice I've switched to tupperware but it is tilted to my right today!!! ROTFLOL Diane just look what you started here!! We shall see if future Bingo hostesses are as brave as we! LOL

And todays calls are................

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

OMG Brenda, that is JUST 2 cute!
Can you stay EXACTLY like that from now on as I had both calls today so I think that must be the perfect combination for me.
Maybe I was a tupperware lady in my past life or something *lol*
You mean hubby didn't take your picture? *lol*

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

I'm in for my short stop! Hi everybody!

You look just beautiful my dear. Now all you need are some noodle earrings. :)

Smitten Kitten is so pretty

(Zone 1)

Well, I've got Smitten Kitten on my card but Gail didn't have either. I agree with Makshi, how about some noodle earrings and something for antenna .... we need a stronger signal down this far south!

..... now, I'm back to mowing! I finished the front, now need to do the backyard! It is so hot here ... next week we are supposed to have a couple of nicer days with temp's right around 79/80! Not soon enough for me!

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

Do your families look at you like you are from outer space? Mine do sometimes.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Makshi..Ohhhh Yes!! Eyes roll and heads turn away, and ears tune me out whenever I want to talk plants with my family..LOL...They just don't get it.!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I'm in Austin, been to Whole Foods Grocery for my son and cannot believe I have to shop at HEB at home. He made his list and asked for granola and lots of yogurt. When I got to the bins, there were only about 8 kinds of granola to scoop out............so I just got a little of every granola offered.

After getting lots of fresh fruit and juices, I looked up to find a deli and my mouth started watering. They had a big two sided salad bar (all for take out)...........I ended up getting 3 kinds of ready prepared meats, chicken and fish...........all kinds of veggies.....got honey maple butternut squash, marinated fresh aspargus, ...........just remembered I also got turkey meatloaf that I almost ate right there..............

They even had homemade desserts...............got a lot of those..............now remember, this if for a sick son............may have to go back when he wakes up and get soup (LOL)..........

The best part of the day was stopping in Sequin, Texas at a nursery that I thought might still have good plants...........they used to when I lived close to Sequin.................they had 4 big big greenhouse bays full of every kind of begonia you can think of and I got 21 pots of 7 kinds of hoyas for 3.35 each well rooted and ones I didn't already have...............
I just kept wishing I could shop for all DGers............I will stop there on Monday after I go by my grandchildren's house on Sunday night...............and take pictures of what they have in these greenhouses..........unbelievable......

I have begonias loaded to the top of my car........now they are on my son's balcony under a table...........they were unloading them this time of the year I guess.............the big 10" containers of rhizomtomas (sp?) begonias had been reduced to 7.00.................the 4" ones were 3.00 each.................
I don't know where I will put them in the car but I am stopping back by that place called GreenGate...........

Tomorrow i will journy out (if I can) to The Great Outdoors who sell hoyas........the only vendors in Austin of hoyas to my knowledge.......

Saturday morning is the big AV sale by the Austin AV group..............I wonder if i will have any money or space to put plants by then..............

Thank you Lin, for watching my card............sorry I didn't get either today.........don't have my list so I am glad you are reporting each day if i got any (LOL)

Gotta go...............
edited to say: Eunice, I am so involved in my shopping for plants I didn't even tell you how happy we are to hear from you..............come back soon and I am sure your brother likes having sis there.........

Woo Hoo Gail ..... I sure would LOVE traveling with you! What kind of car do you have? You really need an SUV or Minivan for all of your purchases! Can't wait to see photo's!

LOL about going back to Whole Foods for Soup for your son! I just made Taco's for dinner a little while ago and everything you mentioned is making me hungry again! We have a whole foods store here and I've never been in it .... going to change my ways!

Keep us all posted on what more you purchase and whether or not you are going to have to rent a trailer to tow back to Taft!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have a little Honda Element but with the seats down, it sure hold a lot of stuff..............the trouble is I brought everything I would need Sunday night to help my granddaughter plant up her baby avs and streps up that she planted at my house this summer. Her mother says her deveined strep leaves have big big babies as do the avs.........I even brought my own big barrell of mix, all the boxes of string for wicking, pots, etc............

I may just leave a lot of my clothes, etc. at my daughter's house ............she is only 2 1/2 hours away from me...........

I wish I could show you all my goodies plus I forgot I found a philodendron 'Moonlight'.........prettiest philo I have ever seen.............look it up somewhere......

My son's computer won't take my kind of memory card so I can't upload any photos until I get home........

I purposely bought a car that is too light weight to tow a trailer...............I used to get a Uhaul trailer every time I went plant shopping!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And that was behind a suburban........(LOL)

Whole Foods is simply the best food in the world. I got a big container of fresh pineapple a cut up (most of their fruit is cut for you).........he ate the whole thing along with his dinner.

You will know why he is slim and trim and I am carrying extra luggage...........he ate pineapple and after I ate dinner, I ate chocolate homemade chocolate macaroons and a big plate of chips and guacamole to die for!!!!!!!!!!

I will keep you informed of my plant escapades while I am gone.............
gail

(Zone 1)

Gail: I am checking our my local Whole Foods store tomorrow! I love fresh pineapple. I always would pick one out at the grocery store and have them shell and core it for me. I haven't bought a whole one in awhile. I need to get one and have them save the top they cut off .... years ago I rooted it and had a neat Pineapple plant! When my family first moved to Florida 40 years ago I planted a little one and eventually it grew the cutest little pineapple fruit on top! I watched that plant every day to see the progress of that cute lil pineapple! One day, I went to check and the little pineapple had been cut off! Made me soooo mad! I never found out who did it.

I have 3 or 4 of the Philo 'Moonlight'. I found real small ones at Wal-Mart this summer for $1.97 each! I just love them. I think the color is just so pretty.

I think this plant is in PF: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/62887/

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Mine doesn't look like the one in plant files............mine has mainly yellowish leaves with a little green............

Another good find was a 10" nice full basket of variegated Bolivian jew for 5.95.............Snow sent me some cuttings earlier this year and I have been just rooting away trying to get a big basket of it..........now I have a big big basket............

This same nursery had the prettiest colors of bougie in several shades of orange to real dark orange ...........I think orange looks so great in the same pot as the regular purple magenta colored one that is the standard one.

I can't wait to go back through there on the way from my daughter's house on Monday..........They were really big baskets for 11.00..............think they are in zone 8 and trying to get rid of anything that freezes..............they do their own growing...........

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Gail you have me drooling between all the great food choices and all the fabulous plant buys!! LOL My oldest daughter made my husband and I a fresh apple pie yesterday and my husband cut a line down the middle so that I wouldn't eat more than my half! ROTFLOL It is good!!!

~Brenda

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Gail, it sounds like you are having SUCH a wonderful time!
Congratulations on the GREAT plant finds.
How is your son feeling? Any better now that mom is there?
I am totally exhausted tonight and want to post some pictures so I'm not going to write much here but LOVE hearing of your trip so keep us all updated and have FUN :)

Kim

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Brenda..................a homemade apple pie...........nothing is as good!!!!!!! That makes me want to throw one together tomorrow.........I like to use Granny Smith apples though there are a lot of good apples to bake with............

Why wouldn't my kids be happy when I come??????? When my children were growing up my brother's favorite thing to say was "If there is a next life I just want to be one of Gail's children, God".......................My son even asked me tonight if mothers just keep giving all their life to their kids............and I had to say yes........that I like to mother his sisters just as much as him............

Does anyone remember the days when life was simpler and everyone went to Grandma's house for lunch every single Sunday of the year?????? My parents didn't cook anything to take nor their siblings and spouses. Grandma did all the cooking ready to eat when we all got home from church. My very favorite desert that she made was friend bananas with a sauce (I just remember that it was sweet and I saw her put cornstarch in it to thicken it.........we poured it over the friend bananas)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Lin, did you see Jeremy's article on growing pineapple tops? http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/174/

It's one that I missed while I was away (with broken laptop). I just ROFLOL'd when I got to his instructions, "I begin by reassuring the pineapple that I have only good intentions for it..." That's just my approach when I'm taking leaf cuttings!

(Zone 1)

Gail: I too remember those long ago days ... the entire family (nannie too) all congregated at my Aunt's house for a HUGE Sunday dinner at @ 1:00 in the afternoon! In the South where I come from Dinner is the mid day meal and Supper is the evening meal! But, it was my Aunt who I remember doing all the cooking. We always had Roast Beef, Ham, Mashed Taters, Sweet Taters, Green Beans, Corn on the Cob, and assorted other veggies. I don't even want to begin listing the desserts! Always at least two different ones, usually three! We lived about 80 miles away so didn't go every Sunday but when we did it was such a treat!

Oh Gail ... Fried Bananas??!! Sounds sooo good! I love anything with Banana's. Every time I make Chocolate Chip Cookies I have to make a batch of Banana Chocolate Chip ones too! I just got a recipe from a friend a few days ago for a Hawaiian Bread that has Pineapples and Bananas in it. Gonna make some tomorrow!

Well ... I was gonna hang around and chat a bit but for some reason I'm hungry ... for something sweet ..... Going to the kitchen now!

G'nite all!

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

I hope that someday when I have grandchildren to be the Ya Ya (sounds funny but I think I want to be called Ya Ya *lol*) that has Sunday dinner every week :)
We used to all go to Gram's for nice meals like that and then it seemed like everyone got divorces and that tradition stopped but I sure did enjoy it as a kid. She would make pot roast in a pressure cooker and it was the BEST thing I had ever eaten. She still can "whip something up" and it tastes so much better than mine *lol*

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

A friend in Houston passed on a wonderful tip to me about bananas........if I can see that they all won't be eaten before they get too old, just throw them in the deep freeze and leave them frozen.

At any given time you want a snack take one out frozen and simply cut through in slices with a sharp knife............then the skin just falls off of each slice and it makes the best and sweetest snack in the world. You wouldn't believe it if you hadn't tried it!!!!

I am glad I didn't bring all my baby avs to plant up............not enough space in this apartment.............but I have more time for DG than when I am home.............
