Safety Packaging

Frankfort, KY

I am sick and tired of all this safety packaging of our food, medicines, and tools that you have to get out a hammer and a chisel to open.

North Augusta, ON

Me too...but it is there for a good reason......those of us without children find it annoying...but those that have them are grateful.

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

Don't ya wish it was a choice though, like paper or plastic?

North Augusta, ON

Yep........and before it came along, remember? when our parents actually had to WATCH us to make sure we didn't get into stuff?

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

Kids still manage to get into stuff, I have no clue how though. A neighbor's little grand-daughter got into her meds and put a pill in her mouth. Very fortunately, she spit it out when the "candy coating" wore off and the taste of the real med hit her. They still had the ambulance and a trip to the ER just to be safe. Poor, beautiful little one's teeth were black from having to drink the charcoal stuff.

Those packages do serve a purpose, no questioning that, but I'm one who opens at least 4-5 pill bottles a day...and I have no little ones. I can also think of times when I was soooo hungry for something and couldn't get the jar open...and thought about breaking it! Or, how about this...did ya ever buy something in one of those big, heavy, plastic bubbles...the regular scissors won't even cut them anymore. I've been thinking about buying a hacksaw just to open packages...but figured I wouldn't be able to get the hacksaw open either!

allergy pills in little foil back bubbles!!aaaggghh takes my kids too many precious am
minutes carving one out

You can ask the pharmacy to put regular pop lids on your meds. I do and they are very good about remembering.

They had to start with the plastic clam-shell packaging on items because people were stealing stuff out of the packages and then they had to put safety wrappers on OTC items because of a couple of people putting poison in the bottles.

Arrrrrrrgh!!!! One bad apple...

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

Yep, you're right. I don't know why, but for some reason this makes me think of the "Pepsi Scare" a few years back. Remember that? Everyone was on the news claiming to have found all kinds of nasty stuff in their Pepsi cans? I think it turned out that none of it was true...but all it took was that first person to start it, then it spread all over the country.

Oh, wait, the Loch Ness Monster just emerged from my Pepsi can!!!!

Are Vampires Living In YOUR Fireplace? News at 11:00!!!

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

I saw a commercial on the Sci-Fi channel the other day...ok, not so much a commercial, but a "tip" from the Sci-Fi channel...it said....
"If something is sliding down your chimney, it's not coming to bring you gifts."
Freaked me out.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

This is one of my favorites to compain about too. Sheesh, I don't know how I ever grew up without all the safety stuff that is in place now.
Makes the stuff more expensive with more waste going to the dumps.
I have to ask a 5 year old how to use the lighter to light a candle, or how to open some asprin. You could actually get hurt trying to cut open one of those blister packs.
"sealed for your protection" means for "your frustration!"

(Zone 7a)

We had a raccoon slide down our chimney when we lived in Wyoming! It IS pretty freaky!!!

(Zone 7a)

Hospitals have a lot of people that come in for stitches because of those, too. They are trying to make them easier.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

blister pack = will get blisters trying to open

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Ok, here is my point. If they can make 22 different kinds of one brand of dish soap, they can make asprin (and the like) come in childproof and non childproof bottles.
Or are they afraid of lawsuits?
My pharmacy does put my medicine in a regular bottle. It is so much easier. Be sure to ask for it, it is so worth the seconds it takes to inquire.
The blister packs have got to go. The plastic can not even be recycled. We need to make a fuss.
Years ago I would rant and rave about tags in clothing. Now I see some labels are printed on (like in a t-shirt) Somebody must be listening to our complaints.

Perhaps my greatest irritation with regard to packaging, and there are many, is with Prilosec OTC. For example, the 42 tablet is packaged as follows: The first box contains three smaller boxes marked "not for individual sale"; following that, each of the three smaller and very hard to open boxes contain two 'sheets' with seven tablets, each in perforated "tear-off"sections that in turn require separating the two layers so one can peel off the back and release the little tablet. I just don't understand why it isn't reasonable to put them in a bottle like aspirin. Complain to the manufacturer ? Forget it. The product is made in Sweden and distributed by Procter and Gamble.

A close second is the "clamshell" stuff that you have to use a utility knife on to get to the 'goodies'. And how about cereal packages that are so hard to open, and meat or cheese deli packages that you tear a strip off the top to reveal a '"resealable" zip-lock' type thing that often pulls off the side making it "unsealable" ?

So much for this mornings pet peeves.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Ahhh, the ziplocks that need to be cut to get to the food. Yeah, that is another good one!
My biggest problem with all of this, is that someone sat in a boardroom and got paid for all the ideas that we hate.

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh, if anything comes in a resealable bag I *cannot* allow DH to open it! From dog food to deli meat he destroys those packages.

My recent favorite was on a bottle of juice I recently purchased at a convenience store. It had one of those pop-up lids. On the upper part of the lid it had printed..."CAUTION: Do not drink" (I read it out loud in front of the cashier and bust out laughing.) On the lower part of the lid it had printed...."if seal is broken". Now, why did they feel the need to separate the two parts of the sentence? Go look at a bottle of Fuze and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Hahahhahahahaha.
DD said the inside of her candy bar had a warning. "this is a snack and should be eaten in moderation"
She rarely eats candy, felt like she was being scolded by big brother.

(Zone 7a)

Labels are funny. DH and I read the instructions on an electric toothbrush box. It was manufactured in China. It read, and I quote, "To be used to help in the prevention of plaque." There was a tiny sticker that had the word "plaque" on it. We pealed the sticker off and it had the word "plague" under it. So much for the Chinese translation. It would have been great if it could have prevented plague!

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

I'm laughing so hard that my dogs are looking at me strange! Now, that's some kinda toothbrush!

(Zone 7a)

They could make a mint!!!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

boy do i share the overpackaging frustration. making it look like more product for the bucks, often.

next time in a dollar store, amuse yourself with the funny names, like luLucky Happy Toilet Bowl Cleaner.
but i admit, their english is a hackofalot better than my Chinese.

(Zone 7a)

And my English sometimes! LOL

Burlingame, CA(Zone 9a)

Grrrr, I find the worst "safety" packaging to be the little white disc that sits under the flip-top lid of a ketchup bottle and is stuck with some kind of super NASA type glue. I have to unscrew the lid, then get a sharp knife to a) puncture it and then lever it up and off or b) take a sharp knife and try and scrape it back from the edge. Whaddya think? Safe?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Good point!

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Looks like I am not alone. That catsup thing, Ugh.
On the label thing and translation...the toothpaste was the best. That is so funny.

I had a shirt once that I removed the tag, because I always do, and it read "line dry, low setting" I kept it, because I thought it was funny.

(Zone 7a)

I would have kept it too. Maybe they meant lower on your line. Like near the floor.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Yeah, not too close to the sun. Ha.

(Zone 7a)

No sunburnt clothes at your house!!! LOL
