Sara, I think it does have some peduncles on it - we shall see if I can keep it happy enough to bloom.

Thanks yall!! The collection of beautiful hoyas is thanks to some very genious friends and a great coop I managed to get in on. The pool was a left over from my GD's 1st BD party. The kids would never get it so I claimed it. I wish I had a few more it is working very well. The guys building the GH are suppose to start tomorrow. The weather man says rain Tue-Thur so we'll see how this goes. I think the hoyas are gonna stay inside until the spring unless I over heat them, I like it warm!!

Nice score on the H. nummularoides Ann. I bought the same EA basket at my local HD in June. The basket is now covered in blooms. It is the strongest sented Hoya that I have found so far. I have it hanging in my mudroom, and when I first walk in, the smell is cloyingly sweet and overpowering - sort of like a funeral parlor. It is remarkable to me that it flowered so nicely in the window that it hangs in, because there is not really all that much light there. I'm also thinking that it may have flowered from the good light reserves that it developed from being in my greenhouse all summer long. I think you will really enjoy your plant for years to come.

I've learned some good stuff from all your pictures, Jeri, Gabi and Chirstine!!

I've been treating my hoyas like African Violets in that I made sure they had plenty of space between each one. But from all these pictures of your beautiful healthy plants I can see that they don't mind crowding up together!! Oh man, I have soooo much more room for hoyas if I do that!!! Thanks for the instructive pictures!

Brenda...they often benefit from creating their own little mini environments ... more humidity etc. As long as they still get air movement...it works wonderfully!!!!

Thanks, Doug. Did you keep yours in the EA soil?
Ann

Waterville, VT(Zone 4b)

Ann,

I left it in the EA soil that it came in. So far I've had no problems at all with keeping the EA plants looking good that way. The plants are so darn thick though I can't get a finger in to tell if the plant needs to be watered so I can only tell by picking them up and hefting them. So far I've guessed right; my four EA plants look great. That also brings up another point. I'm thinking of making something that I can hang those EA plants on in the shower when I water them. They are so thick that no matter how careful I am, I end up with more water on the floor than in the plant. Also, sometimes I try to hold them under the shower to water them and they're too darned heavy to do that. I may invent some type of rod to sit in the tub this weekend to take care of the problem.

Doug, what about a shower curtain rod that is a tension rod? That's what I have my hoyas hanging off of over my bathtub. If your shower stall is one of those square ones, you could probably use a regular curtain rod that is a tension rod.

Ann,

That is a fantastic solution. It is so simple I should have thought of it myself. You saved me from some work. Thank you!

You betcha Doug - think of it is my payment for the mylar idea!

The scent of nummularioides reminds me of roses...but Doug, I had to laugh when I read your post about it reminding you of a "funeral parlor" Your're the only person I ever heard say that. When I had a bunch of carnosas and pubicalyx blooming indoors all at the same time, that is exactly what I thought!

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Now my nummularioides has never bloomed - something to look forward to - um, at least I *think* so! (LOL!)

I still haven't found a really good photo of (any) H. pottsii, and Gabi - though I looked, I couldn't find yours in the D. Liddle threads that I searched. Anybody have one?

Nan,

Here is the pic I posted of one of my pottsii leaves on the D. Liddle thread...

Nan,

I also just looked on www.hoyor.net and found some pics of H. pottsii.
Just go to that site and click on "photos", then go to the letter "P" and you'll find some pottsii photos. Also, you'll see one similar to the one I have if you go to "aff" (under the "photos" section) - it's called Hoya sp. aff. pottsii.

HTH,
Gabi

Hey, I don't mean to eavesdrop on your and Nan's conversation, but just popped in to thank you for the website. Neat!

I'm fairly new to posting at Dave's and have really enjoyed reading all the different posts and conversations. Everyone seems like old friends! So I hope no one minds me jumping in with a question-- where are some good places to get the really intersting Hoyas that it seems everyone else here has!? Other than the trading-- I don't think I have unusual enough Hoyas for that! Mostly the EA's etc. I have at last count about a dozen different Hoyas. Thanks!

Hi and Welcome Diane!! I'm going to d-mail you my favorite place to buy hoyas from as I'm just not sure of the proper procedure here, I'm pretty new myself.

Welcome Diane :)

A great way to get rare cuttings is to go in on the David Liddle group order or the Co-ops. You'll see posts for it, probably in the Spring.

Ann,

Here is my newly constructed plant shower with H. nummulardoides hanging, after a shower, on its new expansion rod hanger. I have to say that my plant shower is now the ultimate, and I'm very happy with it. The shower works like this: I purchased and RV sink off ebay to go into my greenhouse for the summer, and now that summer is over, I moved it into the shower we don't use in our upstairs bathroom. I took and aquarium filter media bag ( a fine mesh bag sort of like pantyhose, which would work equally well), and tied it to the end of the sinks drain hose. This means I don't have to worry about how much soil or perlite gets washed down the drain, because it is caught in the bag, which can be cleaned out as needed. I hooked a hand held sprayer on to my shower head and spray the heck out of the plants. The only missing portion to this shower was the expansion rod, which thanks to your idea Ann is now in place. It will hold the heaviest of hanging baskets, which sure beats trying to hold it in one hand and shower it with the other.

Close up of H. nummarloides flower, which was talked about earlier on this thread. There has to be at least 50 of them on this plant.

Doug you come up with the best and cleverest ideas!! Have you done the trick with the scrubbing bubbles that meltn talked about? I'd love to shine up my leaves but I'm still nervous about those scrubbing bubbles going into the soil? I should have asked her about it I guess.

You out there metln? And were you pulling my leg or can you really use scrubbing bubbles on hoyas? :0)

I love your bloom, so pretty and tiny!

Brenda,

I keep meaning to buy some Scrubbing Bubbles and forget it when I'm at the store. I'm going to try to buy some this weekend. I would like to get rid of some of the water spots on my nicer leaved Hoyas. I, like you, am a little nervous about putting it on my Hoyas, but if anyone knows how to grow Hoyas, Mel does, so I'm sure that it is alright to do. I guess until I know better I will try to not spray too much on the soil.

Here is another bloom photo with my thumb in the way - helps give perspective.

Oh ye of little faith;~) I promise that I would never suggest using something that would harm your Hoyas.
I spray the entire plant (front and back of leaves), the pot and the soil without harm. I do not use it in direct sun light, but, I have never seen any damage to the plants. Spray a little on a cloth and wipe the leaves with the cloth. Once you see the shine of the leaf, you will be spaying the whole plant !
I wish I could take credit for the idea. I beleive I read about it in the Hoyan.
Given the current state of our environment, it is possible that those scrubbing bubbles are safer than the polutants in our air.
Doug, I love your bloomers!

Thanks Mel,

I like my bloomers too LOL.

OK, one can of Scrubbing Bubbles coming up!! Now to start showering daily with a hoya!! I love it, my husband will think I'm nuts for sure. LOL

I had no idea those H. nummarloides blooms were so tiny!! Tiny and yet perfect! Thanks for doing the picture with your fingers showing perspective Doug.

I also looked for some "Scrubbing Bubbles" at the store & found 3 different kinds. Since I wasn't sure which one she was talking about, I skipped it just to be safe.

Doug...your shower idea is the bomb. I love it. Wish I had a spare one to hang a rod in. Ha. By the way, why do you need the sink? Couldn't you just let the water go down the shower drain (covered of course by something to catch the dirt like the filter or some drain screen)?

Brenda...H. nummarloides flowers may be little but the carry a mighty scent. One or two open flowers can perfume a room.

Doug, that set-up is awesome!!! We really have very clever people on this forum!
Ann

Waterville, VT(Zone 4b)

Marcy,

The sink serves a couple of purposes. One, it catches all the washed out soil. Two, It puts you up at a comfortable height to wash or work on your plants. It is hard to keep bending all the way down to the floor to pick up plants. I sort of use it like a potting bench; I've repotted quite a few plants in it, and then what ever mess is left you just rinse it down the sink. Eventually you simply untie the filter bag from the drain hose and clean it out. There is no chance of soil getting underneath a screen.

I bought the sink, because I wanted to have water in my seasonal greenhouse and thought that hooking it up to a sink was the best way to go. A few weeks ago I had an idea that if I brought it inside, I could use it year round, and it works! If anyone is interested, In the greenhouse forum, I have a long thread titled How to Install a Sunshine Garden House On an Existing Deck. It is a page or two back and shows more pictures of the sink in the greenhouse.

I was in the gh doing some watering today and found this leaf on my hoya latifolia IML 88. This plant hangs a bit high in the rafters so the leaf is not visible to me from just standing on the ground watering it. You can't really get an idea of just how big it actually is from the pic but it measured in at almost 9 inches long by 6 1/2 inches wide!

Just lurking about the Hoya forum again. Have enjoyed this thread a lot! Love everyone's photo's.

Dmichale, that is one Huge Hoya! I didn't realize any of them had leaves that large. I like the speckling in the leaves. What color are the flowers on that one, are they huge too? Looks like a really nice plant.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

I actually have a few hoyas with leaves MUCH larger than this one. Both H. aff. latifolias IML 1410 and IML 1590 have leaves larger than the IML 88 H. latifolia.

As for the flowers on this particular hoya, i've only seen it bloom once since i've been growing it and I seem to recall them being and off white to cream color and being sort of plain Jane in apearance. I grow this one more for the foliage than for the blooms.

The flowers were what first attracted me to hoyas, but I just as quickly became a foliage nut as well and now pick and choose which hoyas to add to my collection based more on the leaves.

(Zone 1)

Wow ... even larger than those? I guess some Hoya's need a lot of space, huh?

I am very attracted to foliage on a lot of plants, rather than flowers ... especially variegated foliage! I do love the fragrant hoyas but have seen photo's of some that the foliage is just awesome!
