Hi Joanne how's that new job going? I bet you have them eating out of your hands already.
I did well!!! As all of you my friends will see!! Christmas arrived early in Central this year.
My list:
H. Mindorensis
H. Calyana
H. Globulosa
H. Incrassata
H. Mathilde
Sorry no pictures my grandson took my camera for a field trip tomorrow. I'll get the pictures after school tomorrow.(I hope!!!)
Jeri
"Round Robbin Thread #2"
Excellent choices everyone. The box looks like it has some miles on it. Can't wait for pictures Jeri, you did good :)
Yay....I'm glad you liked my cuttings! I'm especially proud of the mindorensis and mathilde....the globulosa (I forget the new name) has never flowered for me, but I adore the leaves, which remind me of stained glass windows. Calycina has gorgeous blooms like the australis. The incrassata came from Mel, several years ago! (has not bloomed for me yet, either).
Julia
The box looks a little rough but I think that adds character to it. It's still holding up just a little wrinkled around the edges. LOL!!! I was so excited to see it none of that matter. The merchandise inside looked great!!! I'm telling you it's filled to the brim with HOYAs.
Jeri
I hope the next recipicant is as happy with his surprise. Thank you Julia!!! They are breathtaking!!! I'm gonna pot them up tomorrow. Hopefully my DGS won't break or loose my camera tomorrow on his field trip, there will be pictures.
Jeri
This is so exciting! I may not be on the 'list' but I'm still riding along with everyone!
Julia--
You have globulosa and the leaves look like stained glass? I just received cuttings in the mail today that I'd ordered from somewhere but didn't look like that. I would love to see a pic of yours if possible to compare.
I couldn't remember what it looked like but if I ordered it I know there must have been something I really liked about- like leaves like stained glass?! Hope it's the same one and mine just isn't 'there' yet.
Diane
This has been such a fun experience! Not only was it fun to get the box full of cuttings, but it's been great watching it get to everyone else, and seeing what they get! Count me in for the next one, too!!
Karen
Isn't it fun to see when someone picks your cuttings? Julia, I felt that same excitement when I saw that you picked a few of my cuttings (anulata, pachyclada, incurvula, and schneei)!
I have to say, everyone has been throwing in such amazing cuttings!!
Gabbi,
I also agree that it is fun when someone picks your cuttings. It makes you think you did a good job and put in something that was worthwhile for someone else. I felt great that Nan took my H. leytensis, and Mark took H. retusa and H. cumingiana from me.
Doug
Gabi, Indeed - thanks for the healthy cuttings! It is nice to know your babies were adopted by someone who will coddle them.
Some of the cuttings are already sending out rootlets in my mini greenhouse (I've been checking obsessively). Hope they all survive.
Julia
Thanks Julia!
It is very pretty! The cuttings I got yesterday don't have leaves that large or quite so rich green color that yours has. But your beautiful plant gives me hopes for mine! Anything with mottled, veiny, or colored leaves usually attracts me.
I didn't join this round robin because I have only common full size plants to take cuttings from. The rest of my hoya are just new cuttings. Hopefully by the next one I'll have cuttings from the smaller plants. I've been watching what everyone has picked from the box and I can't wait for the next round robbin to start. Enjoy your cuttings!!! And I'll see you next round-robbin.
Jeri I'm so envious! Those are great hoyas! What I find amazing is that at each stop I find at least one or two (ok lets be honest three or four....) that I would like to have.
THe job is good for my body (down 2 full pant sizes... yea me!) and good for the check book, so I shouldn't complain, but gosh I'm tired and my feet hurt :~) God bless All, -joanne
I know aren't they wonderful. They are nice and healthy too. Sorry no picture today. My DGS still has my camera.
This has been the most fun!! I can't wait to do it again!!!!
Jeri
Joanne,
Congrats on the weight loss. I need to get busy but don't want a job to get it done. :-)
Tami
Eddie from Epiforums got the box Saturday (is that today?) and will ship it off to TamiF in AZ on Monday. I will post what he took out when he sends me the details. Be on the look out for the box by mid week Tammy! God bless, -joanne
Here is the picture I promised.
Some of the vines were so long I made 2 cuttings out of them.
The Mindorensis is pretty yellow that's one of the reasons I chose it. Do yall think it's make it? I used Dip N Grow and then watered with Superthrive water before covering them with a 7" plastic dome.
Jeri
Oh wow -that is pretty yellow. I wonder why it yellowed so quickly, cause it was only in the box for a few days - is mindorensis known to be a fragile hoya? Mine has very hard leaves, so I would've thought it was pretty tough. Your other cuttings look great! Are all the mindorensis leaves yellow? It looks that way in the picture. If so, they will probably fall off. Hopefully there is one leaf that isn't yellow, and I even heard that cuttings can make it with no leaves at all - so you might be ok. I hope it makes it!
Gabi
Thanks Gabi!! I'm gonna watch it close. I didn't think it would make it to another stop. I love a challenge!
Jeri
Hi Jeri,
I'm surprised it yellowed so quickly! It was green when I put it in the box. Weird! If the stem is still sturdy and green, I think it'll make it with tender loving care. Looks like you're putting the cuttings in a mini greenhouse, which will help. Mindorensis is a vigorous grower for me....
Julia
Thank you Julia!!! The stem is firm. You think it came across some cold weather? The rest are fine. I've had very good luck with these 7" plastic domes. 2 weeks and I have a nice root system going. I've lost 2 cuttings all summer and I think the lid knocked them loose.
I had never even heard of this one.
I'll let you know how it goes!!
Jeri
Ok, Jeri. I'm assuming you're using a heat mat underneath the domes as well...that's what mine came with. I'd be happy to send you a new cutting if your mindorensis doesn't make it....
Julia
Oh Julia that is so sweet!!! Let's see how it does. I ordered an Excavata that came in with 2 yellow leaves and it made it so I'm not giving up yet. Of course this is my first winter with them inside so I may have some surprises in store. They did wonderful on my back patio this year. I can't wait for flowers!!!
We're still at 75 during the day and I have them on my concrete back patio. Our weather is suppose to hold until the end of next week at least. It has worked better for me than the heating pads.
Thanks again!!!
Jeri
I got an email from Eddie and here's what he said:
"OK, I took out Hoya "Black Star", Hoya veriticillata bronze and Hoya krinkle. I chucked out hoya obscura which had all yellow leaves. I put back in 3 hoyas to replace the ones I took. Thanks for all the fun! -Eddie
So TamiF, it's on it's way to you! Be looking for it tomorrow or the next day :~) Then me, YEA!! God bless, -joanne
Woo Hoo, come to mama !! Oh shoot, now I am not ready... It will most likely be here tomorrow, it has a looooong way to travel....
The box arrived this morning and is on it's way to Oregon. There are some super awesome cuttings in there. I was tempted to take two more, but from experience, I knew that I would kill them. What a great way for us all to build on our collections. Joanne I did not put mine in plastic bags, they are wrapped on the stems, but I just so no need in doing it since it was on it's last stop. There are a couple in the box that are def. on there way out. H. kerrii var. and the picta. Thanks Joanne for a super fun RR.
Oh I took out 2, and put in 8.
Pubicalyx "Red Buttons"
Purpurpeo fusca
I'm not sure the purpureo will make it, but it is one I didn't have, as well as the red buttons. Happy rooting everyone.
I hope it gets to you on Friday Joanne, I had it to the PO by 1:00, and oh boy did it need a new box. The box still had Marks addy on it, so that baby really held up well.
HAPPY HOYAWEEN EVERYONE !!!
Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! I can't wait! I sure hope purpureo makes it Tami but if not I have a plant that in the spring I should be able to take some cuttings off of.
This is so fun! I am on day shift Friday and Saturday so will leave STRICT instructions for the girls so they can get them out of the box and have them waiting for me when I get home. I will also want a detailed voice mail I can listen to on break :~) Perhaps I won't have them call and tell me what's in the box, it may make the 12 hours seem like 40!
Take care all, thank you and God bless! -joanne
I want to be in this next time so bad....
Wow, the box is finally headed home. What an absolutely wonderful experience watching the travels of hoyas across the states. I can't wait to see what you get in the box, Joanne. It will be fun to see what is in the box after all these travels and I bet you are going to have some surprises. I have thoroughly enjoyed this RR and looking forward to the next one.
Joanne retire and save the poor box!!! The mere sight of it has brought chills to all of our blood!!! It bears the drool marks of some and shaky hands of others!!! It should have a place of honor for the remainder of it's days!!! LOL!!!
Jeri
Maybe I should have it bronzed :~)
Uh Oh !!! I changed the box :{ It really needed it bad. I can dig it out of the trash can and send it to you Joanne for bronzing. LOL Thanks for the offer on replacing the hoya Joanne, will see what happens with it. Joanne are you sure your not feeling a little feverish, nasua, sore throat, anything?? I can call in sick for ya tomorrow.
Well the box arrived today!! in perfect condition, I might add... Here is what was in it:
H. sp. 1420 IML1420
H. naumanii IML 0198
H. aff. cardiophylla IML 1685
H. cv. Ruthie
H. sp. Abas
H. eitapensis
H. longifolia
H. serpens
H. linearis
H. limoniaca
H. affins
H. macgillivrayii
H. obovada
*****************
H. australis (don't think it will make it...)
H. fraterna
H. polyneura
H. cummingianna
H. compacta
H. lacunosa (speckled leaf)
H. shepherdii
H. kerrii var. (totaly dead)
H. carnosa Krimson Princess ('picta' written on the bag)
H. kerrii
I put eithere 19 or 20 cuttings/plants in the box when it was sent off and there were 23 cuttings/plants in the box today. The H. kerrii var is totaly dead and the only one that started in the box 7 weeks ago. The cutting of H. australis is questionable but may make it. I will pot these all up and post a picture tomorrow. The ones above the **** line are the ones I choose to keep for myself. The others I will pot up and see if they root. I would like to send them to people who did not get in on the RR but would like to have any of those. I also have lots more of the var. kerrii if anyone would like it. My concern is the temps at night. It was 28 degrees this morning when I got up, SO, my thought is we should wait until early spring, 1, for the weather and 2, to see if these root. I am open to sugestions and other ideas. Let me all know what you think.
I have had so much fun with this I hope we all plan on doing it again! I think Mel has offered to start the next one and I for one am on board!!!
Pictures tomorrow...Thanks again everybody! God bless, -joanne
It has been so fun watching this thread, I WILL be watching for sign ups on the next RR for sure!
I'm glad that you ended up with several that you were happy to keep Joanne!!
This has been so much fun, thanks to all for making it that way!!
~Brenda
Yay, I'm glad you got some choice cuttings to keep for yourself, Joanne! Thanks for organizing this. I'd love to do it again in the spring as well.
Julia
Perhaps in the spring we might get two boxes going. I have heard from numerous people who really wanted to participate in the trades and didn't.
I think there are a lot of DGers who grow hoyas but are reluctant to post and join in the fun. So, here's to hoping that springtime brings everyone out of the closet (LOL)
Just out of curiosity, why are other DGers reluctant to post here?
Joanne, glad the box came full circle and that you are happy with what you have. You deserve it!
I would like to be put on that list in the Spring!!! Can I just hibernate until then??
Gabi
