Dave - you might want to try planting the Acidanthera in a pot (or a few pots) and lifting pot and plants into the garage for the winter, near a warm wall. Then simply replant pot and all next May.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I might try that too. What other colors do they come in?

Van Etten, NY(Zone 5a)

As far as I know, that is the only color. One of the things I love about Acidanthera is that it is very tough and forgiving. I'm sure the more you do, the better it is, but this is all I do. Late in the fall I dig out the clumps but don't separate them. I put them in a bushel basket in the dirt part of our cellar which rarely goes lower than 45 degrees. In late May or early June (our zone has a late frost date), I get the basket, separate the clumps, peel off the old "oniony" skin so that I can see if there is a shoot started. If I can, I pull off the hard, dead wad of stuff at the bottom of the bulb and toss it. Sometimes I leave it on. Then I plant them. They really multiply so I end up throwing the smallest ones and the ones without shoots in the compost. They come up like little grassy glads, around 2-3 feet high, and it seems like nothing will happen. But in late August they start to bud, many to each stalk, and they are still blooming now when most flowers are gone. I plant them with compost and bone meal.

bebop is right, Victor. That is the only color. They're some relative to glad's.

Dutch Gardens is where I buy mine but I've seen them at Home Depot, as well, in March and April.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

oh thanks everyone!!!!

I loved the desert rose... love at first sight! they had 3 kinds... could not let this one pass!

Eleanor, I fell asleep during the Red Sox game and later I woke up to see them loose!!!! so I just checked DG!!!!

Bebop, I am not very sure how many roses I have... I am going count them tomorrow.................

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Kassia - whatever amount you have is just short a few of what you need.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

LOL... I agree... but Pirl, right now I am just thinking of how many can I fit into the new beds... I did one bed specially for the dahlias...

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I planted a new rose by a trellis this spring. It wasn't doing anything so I added a dahlia - now they're both fighting for the space. It's always how it happens.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Same thing with women. Add a second one to the mix and...

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Cat fight!

Our snapdragons are still going sttrong as well. We plan to let them sit and re-seed themselves, too, as we just fell in LOVE with the soft colors. And the red!!! Oh my goodness ~ the flowers looked like velvet!!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Blaze of glory ... again.... if anyone needs a good orange climber... this is one to have.... it's really a good rose....

:)

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Looks good Kass. I tried the cup and saucer one year - it did flower a week before frost.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Al, good to know... I wonder if I should start the seeds inside the house by Feb...

Onewish - I think that was the only clean finger I had... this past weekend I could not get my feet and hands really clean... saturday I trully had green feet... I cut the grass wearing just flip flops... needless to say I had to put tons of cream on my feet and wear socks.... but sunday my feet were black... I was laying mulch... so today I only got my hands dirty... and had to give myself a manicure as I watched CSI Miami...
lol... I love clean nails... but that does not stop me from gardening without gloves!!!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Everything's beautiful, Kassia. Even your feet and nails. I love that teeny tiny bloom!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Very nice Kass. How can your fingernails be so clean??!!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

I am picky Victor... I love french manicure ... and I am a girly girl in so many aspects... but I am very proud of all the callous I have!!! signs of a great time gardening!

That plant with the tiny flower is a Cubea ... I will post a picture of the entire plant... so cute!

Van Etten, NY(Zone 5a)

This calliopsis is another survivor of a light frost. It's really a little flower, I'll send a picture of the whole plant next.

Here's a bed of about 6 plants. This was taken in August. It doesn't look anything like this now, just a few stragglers, like the one above.

Nice. How big a phone do you need??!

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

geez. i remember my 1st friends who had a "car phone". They could bring it inside with them, but it was like a little briefcase - had a handle & everything. We thought - Wow. That is amazing - a phone you can carry with you!
i feel old.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

here's a big cell phone:

Can't imagine people using that!

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

it could be a great item for personal safety. you could call 911 AND hit your assailant on the head, rendering him unconcious...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Assuming you can lift it.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Early technology is always funny later. The first portable computer weighed like a hundred pounds I believe.

My crazy ruffles cosmos are similar Amy.
