Here is a photo of an Ipomoea purpurea that a friend got that isn't sure if it should remain blue or turn pink...

Thumbnail by RON_CONVOLVULACEAE

Oh my goodness! That is so amazing! I absolutely LOVE the half n halfs, theyre my favorite type of blooms. Does this trait remain?

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Hi Eva Sometimes the split colors will be passed on depending on the strain...the flaked and flecked strains are good to 'work with' for 'split' colored flowers...

TTY,...

Ron

P.S. - The flower I posted was a 'fluke' amongst a flush of regular blue I.purpurea...still very interesting...

Neat "fluke" Ron!!!

Ron - Your freaky fluke is marvelous! What an eye-catcher! :-)

My Sunrise Serenade is producing some whole instead of feathered MG blooms. What is this original cultivar that was used to get Sunrise Serenade?

Well, there's a freeze advisory for tonight, and I can't decide if I should put a blanket over the MGs or let them freeze. I covered them a couple of weeks ago, but it just seems natural now that's it's October. The problem is there are a lot of buds ready to open. It's supposed to be in the 60s tomorrow and 70s the rest of the week.

Here's an interesting pic from yesterday.

I believe Sunrise Serinade was a hybrid of Japanese Hige and Crimson Rambler.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Judith - What is this pretty yellow MG? http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=4058712

Eva - I was thinking a pale version of Crimson Rambler when I saw the bloom. Thanks for your reply. :-)

Sunrise Serenade was 1st offered by Mandeville & Co(Rochester,NY) in the 50's but fully double I.purpurea in many colors were subsequently offered by Park and called "Tinkerbell's Petticoat"...colors offered were pink, rose, red, blue, lavender and white...

Almost all the sunrise serenade plants occasionally produce single flowers.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Ron, I had no idea Sunrise Serenade was around in the 50's.
I would love to see a pic of the Tinkerbell's Petticoat, dbl purpurea's,
later offered by Parks. I bet a few people are still growing these somewhere.
I had a catalog from Burpees, the heirloom collection, which featured a photo
of a dbl white from many yrs ago. If I find it, do I need permission
from Burpees to share it here?

I snapped this photo just before dark, so it's not the greatest. Just wanted to post it and comment that it's from the same vine as the pink flower shown here:

Sandy - This one is amazing if it came from the same vine as the other blooms. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=4063444 What is it????? NICE!!!

Also your Sazanami is quite an eye-catcher as well! As is the Gypsy Bride and your Chocolate MGs! :-)

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Nice blooms Sandy

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Interesting kikyo flower.

A fluke since this only happens once in a blue moon.

This is mutant blue flower. This vine produces many different forms of flowers on one vine.

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Btw Sandy, Your Sazanami is beautiful and all your pictures are always very impressive. :)

This one is a chocolate ray pattern. This one isn`t normally wrinkly but the rainy weather and high humidity messes with the flowers on some days. The chocolate ray is dark and really stands out from a distance on this one.

This is from the pink x purple blizzard grow out. It is a vine that started darker pink and got very light.

oops...no picture there for the mutant that produces many forms of flowers.

Ok, one more try.

Does it make singles, too?

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

And finally, here is a pink x purple grow out with a darker pink in the center and blizzard pattern.

Hi Beth. It makes singles, in betweens and very double shredded much like the kikyo exept these have a somewhat different fullness to the flowers. They are mutants and also have varied leaves some smooth and some wrinkly and twisted on the same vine.

Pretty colored bloom, and it looks like the petals are slightly lighter at the edges.

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Thanks, now I have to go over to post a picture on Mid South forum and then I have to give my son his science paper. TTYL,Karen

Here is another old hand-colored botanical print to share. I wouldn't pay much attention to the species and name since so much has changed since the day this was published.

Wedding bells with zinnia in the background. These blooms are BIG!

Pretty garden photo, Beth! How big are the Wedding Bells bloom? My largest bloom is of course my Moonvine blooms which are 6-7" flowers! But some of the other ones I grew this year are almost as big! Love those big showy blooms!

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

I guess I'll have to take my tape measure to the garden. Size DOES matter, giggle!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Karen those are all beautiful. Love the Dbl Blue. The Sazanami light is
really pretty.

Beth, Wedding Bells is gorgeous, a wonderful color.
