I am not getting old!

Surry, VA(Zone 7b)

I can't say that I've gotten too forgetful, but alot of things/knowledge that I've stored my head over the years finally fits together like pieces in a puzzle now. I wouldn't trade this part of my life for anything in the world.
When I was growing up, I remember my father insisted on watching Perry Mason and my mother had to watch Peyton Place. They watched Mitch Miller, but for some reason he scared me,(maybe the beard), because I thought he looked like the devil. lol I would also hide when the Wicked Witch of the West showed her face in the globe during the Wizard of Oz. Memories....

I was going to send you a message, but after I read all of the above, I forgot what it was.

I go back further than you guys. We didn't have tv or a telephone back then, although my grandparents did. Theirs was the "candlestick" type. Radio was our only entertainment. Mother had her programs during the day starting with the Breakfast Club, Ozzie and Harriet, Aunt somebodys Stories, Helen Trent, One mans' Family Pepper Youngs Family, Queen for a Day (Where they only got one wish) Lum and Abner. Afternoons I got to listen to Little Orphan Annie, Jack Armstrong, the All ?American Boy, Captain Midnight, Green Hornet, and later on was The Little Theater on Times Square, Inner Sanctum, The Texaco Star Theater, George Burns and Gracie Allen, The 64 Dollar question where the host went down into the audience and asked a question. If right, they got 1 silver dollar, then it was doubled. As each question was answered right, it went up higher , ending at 64 silver dollars. Oh! that sounded like so much money! And not everyone got that high up! Also Bob Hope, Eddie Cantor, Red Skelton, plus Truth or Consequences! Not the way they did it on tv. Here if the question wasn't answered correctly, they were sent out on the street to do a consequence! Sometimes they dress them up funny and have a hidden microphone when they had to do their stunt or stop people! Anytime major news was breaking, Newsboys would run down the streets shouting, Extra,Extra! I would be sent running downstairs with 2 cents to get a paper! Mail delivery was twice a day, and mail was always delivered NEXT day for 2 cent stamp, first class, or envelope unsealed with flap tucked in, was 1 cent. (third class). Good old days!

How could I ever forget them! Remember also, penny candy? Jawbreakers, Mary Janes, Snaps, candy dots on a long paper strip, Guess What (2 candy kisses and a toy), little wax bottles with a sweet liquid inside, little tin pan of fudge and a little wee spoon to eat it with, Tootsie rolls were about 4" long, green leaves, jelly beans, caramels, all 3 for a penny! Even the 5 cent candy bars, Butterfingers were about 10-12" long, Three Musketeers were about 5" long and divided into 3 smaller bars: vanilla, strawberry and chocolate in the one package. Oh my, I think it's time for me to head to my hidden stash of chocolate!!!

Memories are great and remember most of yours, Sis & djm906. How about after the road was paved, floating popcicle sticks down the gutters after a rain? The local veggie guy going down the road w/his cart and horse selling his produce, and us stealing into his garden after dark to just to bug him, becaus if we ever took anything Daddy would come after us with the belt. Did you just see in the news that if you spank a kid "once in a while" he/she won't be messed up for life? Amazing how we made it through roadrunner and didn't go out and do something awful.

Eyes! Have you been in the cooking sherry???? LOL.

Oh, And the ice man! When he would chop the chunks of ice to the size he needed, and sling it on his back to deliver to someones house, we kids would dash over and climb on the cart and shove ice chips into our mouths. Yes, Agapanthus, How well I remember floating popsicle sticks in the gutters after the rains, or even in big puddles! Sometimes we'd find big black ants and put them on the sticks, so they could take a ride.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

djm....cooking sherry, moi?? Just a little "South Dallas Koolaid, thas all....

yep, remember the ice man and the coal man. Someplace in the cellar there was a hole where all that black stuff would slide down. Then you would have to sweep the floor because of all the black stuff all over the place. NEVER did ants on the sticks......although I could have blocked that out or had some brain cells fried during the "hippie years: lol

djm906 do you remember the two for a penny candy? I loved Mary Janes candy. How about those drive-ins where you could buy hambergers and french fries, not to mention the movie drive-ins where we would all load up in the trunk of the car lol. We still have one drive-in movie left in our city and we plan to go to see a movie this weekend, now how is that for memeories. It's to bad that the kids of today don't have the chance to enjoy some of the things that we did, maybe there wouldn't be so much violence if they did.

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

The drive-ins were great. You'd talk to the speaker and they would bring your order out to your car, and hook a tray on your window with the food on it. Plus the movies. We'd put the kids in their pajamas, and take their pillows, plus a pile of goodies. Lovely evening out for 1.00. Too bad the drive-ins aren't around any more here. Oh yes, I remember the 2 for a penny candy, and for a nickel, you could get a whole bag of goodies! Nice to take to the movie show that you paid only 10 cents to get in. Two full length features, news, coming attractions and a cartoon or two. Some days you'd get free candy bars or comic books as you left the theater. And for women, free dishes (on Tuesday afternoons). Living was easy!

(Zone 5a)

Djim906 we still have one drive in movie here and I hope that they don't close it. It is located on S. High St by a shopping mall, I hope that they don't get gready and decide to expand the mall.

Wow! Does it show regular movies? The last one around here several years back only showed "girly" movies. You'd see cars pulled over to the side of the road, (You could see the screen from the road) and all the old lechers hanging out their windows watching for free!

(Zone 5a)

Yes it does show regular movies, no girly shows. We still get two movies but we have to get our own refreshments and no freebies. We always take a piece of carpet and padding to lay on in the back of the van.
We are suppose to go this weekend if the old bucket doesn't have to work Sat. I hope they never close my grand kids love it, we have a lot of fun just trying to get there early enough so that we can park beside each other. The kids get a kick out of going from our van to their car for goodies.

That sound like a perfect way to spend an evening. If it gets hot and muggy in the evening, you have the air conditioning in the car. Remember the old days when you'd leave your car door wide open to get any breeze, or go sit on the hood of the car and watch the movies?

All I know is that I'm on a first name
