CLOSED: What is this giant black fly (diptera)?

Lillington, NC

In looking through the bugfiles database, the closest fly to the one i am trying to identify is the black soldier fly. However, the black soldier fly is about 2 cm long, has lower white legs, and antenna. This bug is considerably larger (about 3cm+), has a proboscis, no antennea, and jet black legs. I am posting for the first time. I saw a pair of these today, next to an open wound on a hardwood tree. There were also Red Admiral butterflies at the same wound, and I was able to take a picture of the fly and the butterfly in the same frame to show the size. I am going to try to post a second pic to give another view of this fly also. (my first post, so will try to get it right).

mrvaselineglass,
this forum is for problems with the data in bugfiles.

If you post this item to our Bug and Insect Identification forum: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/bugid/all/
you stand a much better chance of getting someone to identify your fly,

I was outside on the porch today and I saw a giant bug coming at me and it stopped and landed in front of me on the steps. At first I thought it was one of those black wasps or muddaubers. I looked again and it was a giant fly. Not like a horse fly but its wings were solid black and it had all the charachteristics of a fly the eyes and the shape. It even moved like a fly. IT was huge twice the size of a horse fly. It was at least an inch and half long. I went to find something to catch it in and when I came back it was gone.
I have never seen anything like it before in my life.
I have also seen a turqoise flying crab like creature if anyone has any info on either one of these please email me at dustinbhuckabee@yahoo.com
thank you
