In looking through the BugFiles database, the closest fly to the one i am trying to identify is the black soldier fly. However, the black soldier fly is about 2 cm long, has lower white legs, and antenna. This bug is considerably larger (about 3cm+), has a proboscis, no antennea, and jet black legs. I am posting for the first time. I saw a pair of these today, next to an open wound on a hardwood tree. There were also Red Admiral butterflies at the same wound, and I was able to take a picture of the fly and the butterfly in the same frame to show the size. I am going to try to post a second pic to give another view of this fly also. (my first post, so will try to get it right).
