It's lovely Beth. This bloom looks more red than any others I've ever seen.

You can still see a little pink in it but overall I am very impressed by the color.

Beth! Those are beautiful!

It reminds me of rubies. Karen

Those are beautiful Beth.. rich color too. Start hand pollenating just in case, then take the plant inside by a sunny window.. the one I had started blooming inside next to the window that got full sun most of the day.

Thanks A, these ARE blooming inside under metal halide lights. I am taking extra care of this plant in the hope that it makes seeds. Any MG left outside is exposed to the possibility of a cucumber beetle coming along and munching off all of the sexual reproductive parts of the bloom! I have seen this happen so I brought it inside and have hand pollinated the two blooms it had this weekend.

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

I've only got two blooms so far, but should be one more tomorrow.

Beautiful, Beth! Sort of like mine, but mine does have a white throat slightly visible.

just what we needed, Beetle Birthcontrol..lol.

Where did your seeds come from revclaus? They look like a good strain!

Very pretty, an awesome red!

Judith - Nice solid red Scarlett blooms! Funny how the seed companies sell Scarlett O'Hara and it's NOT. I grew some commercial packaged seeds earlier this year and they looked more like Wine and Roses. :-/

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

I got my seeds from an online friend some years ago. Hopefully I'll be able to gather my own this year.

Becky, I've got one vine from the same seed batch that looks exactly like Wine & Roses! Pretty, but not SOH! I also have a Wine & Roses volunteer from last year that hasn't bloomed yet, and if it doesn't bloom soon it'll be lost to frost.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Those are stunning Beth! Getting very close to a true true red! It would be interesting to cross them with mine and see what pops up! Mine has the white throat, but the color is a truer red than what's passing for SOH from seed companies.

I wonder if word got out there what they Really looked like and how pretty they really were then sellers would be scrambling around trying to nab that real SOH? Would it cut back on the Nots you think?

That very thing is happening right now and time will tell if a difference is made. Think positive and keep on truckin` chasing them seed bandits around with these gorgeous pictures and it might help them come around. :)

Lovely color X

I have the feeling the white throat is a dominant trait...there are so many of them!

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

It looks like from the grow out that we are doing with the pink x purple that the white is likely dominant. The color in the throat is likely to be recessive. I also know you can get a color throat from a pod parent with a white throat so it might be a dominant trait where either they have the white throat or they don`t.

If that was the case, then you might could easily breed that out if you had a red flower with the only undesirable trait being the white throat. Karen

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Well, that is redder than the one that appeared in NM as seen here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=3578088
and redder than the ones that Dee got as seen here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=3257009
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=3962372
but it should be entirely the reddish color that is showing in the throat and around the area of the secondary folds...and I swear that is the color that mine bloomed...

I know I tend to grow my plants in an acidic medium but I don't think that totally accounts for what I got...

Just going to have to keep on growing out the old seeds that I got an select for the best ones...

Maybe somebody else has better(?!)...but I tend to strongly doubt it(!)...if someone else had better ones they would have shown them by now...

Personally I prefer to select from what I already have than to play around diluting them with otherstuff that isn't showing up as red and has less than solid throats/tubes...

So,these blooms aren't as solid red as I was awaiting but I can see that the right color is(!) in there and may just need to be brought out a bit more...

Still nice looking blooms...

TTY,...

Ron

P.S. - Beth why don't you bisect the blooms to show what the tube looks like(?!)...all the way down...

P.P.S. - Hopefully these photos won't show up on ebay by some unscrupulous purveyors of deceit...

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

If I get blooms after I am SURE that seeds have developed, I will bisect and photograph one. Right now I am just worried about getting seeds since the plant waited so late in the year to bloom.

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Ron,

That is why I watermark all my pictures I show on here. It is to protect the flowers. I strongly suggest Beth begin to mark her pictures. Karen

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

In the beginning I did watermark my photos, but it seems to ruin the presentation of them. In any case, an unscrupulous person can just crop off the DG watermark and still use the photo. I'll look into different types of watermarks.

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

We can still email the files to our friends we know we can trust but it worries me to think of them being misrepresented and abused for dishonest gain. The Adobe photo deluxe has a text feature and you can lighten it by degrees so people can see it but your ID name is on there and not easily removed without a lot of work. I notice more people on ebay are using watermarks. Karen

P.S. You might be able to find a free trial for something like that if you don`t already have it.

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

I've got an ancient version of Adobe Photodelux, Business Edition, but I can't find anything about watermarks there.

Wow! that's old!

I agree with Beth about the watermarks detracting from the photos...and I definitely like to look at fine details that may be obscured by watermarks...most of the stuff of mine is so rare no one else has the seeds to be able to use the photos but Ipomoea nil is another story...

If I see my SOH on ebay that person better have their will made out...

LOL, if anybody copies the photos I'll just send Ron their information!

after I learn how to use the camera, I will get one of those watermarks.. I've been thinking about it for a long time. It reminds me of a something my EX-Husband said to me once.

I saw a sign that said "Cake Decorating CLasses" and I said, wow, I want to take a class, and he said "Don't you think you should learn how to make a cake first??"

Hey, who knows how to cook at age 19 :)???

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Beth, I thought the wm distracted from the picture quality too but the feeling of being robbed sort of changed my mind. If someone sold junk seeds using one of my pictures then it would really bug me. I`m not trying to tell anyone what to do but only making a suggestion. :)

I did find one of my photos attached to an ebay sale and emailed the perp. She had either gotten the photo (of Cameo Elegance) from this site or from Flickr. She was very apologetic. I don't know how much a watermark helps...if you didn't take the photo it's not your intellectual property and most people realize they did wrong when they are confronted.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I usually hide my moniker in the photo .. unless you are looking for it you don't see it .. or I put it in a place where it would be very obvious if alteration was done.

Wow....if it's in that picture I can't see it.....

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

I give up, too...can we have a hint?

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

X - Nice...you always do a nice placement...but the photo could still be cropped just above your dodad and still be used...

I see it, I see it!!!! barely
