fall RU: who's bringing what?

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Being new at this, i'm a little confused as to who is bringing what to the roundup, and how we go about trading.
Unfortunately, i don't have a lot to offer, but i have:

grandpa otts MG seeds
a few browallia seeds
2 small plants: coreopsis nana
some assorted black/red/green coleus (one is black dragon) in pots
2 small plants: bath's pink dianthus
a couple potted strawflowers still blooming strong, which should also be good for drying and/or seeds
a couple of basil plants which i think can go inside

if i can figure out how to divide them, i'll also have oregano, tarragon, and black peppermint, and firewitch dianthus

anyone?

this is a good thread--I'm a Newbie too. I'll watch to see what people say and then try to figure out what to bring.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Hi Amy:

I just saw this thread. Wow! For someone who said thay don't have much, that's certainly a lot that you are bringing.

My DD, Anna, and I will be at the RU. We won't be bringing anything, unless we think of it at the last minute. That's because we are boith new to gardening this year, and only harvested columbine seeds. Most of the columbine seeds have either gone to members already, or are spoken for by Anna's co-workers.

But we will both bring our bright, smiling faces!!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Amy, I am going to link this thread over in the RU thread and then they will see it. I think you may get more of a response this way.....hope you don't mind!

Still not sure if I'm coming (Mom turns 70 and Dad just had surgery), but if I do I'm not sure if I'm bringing anything yet either. To me the RU is all about meeting everyone. I really don't care about trading or eating or even Logee's. We could meet at a truck stop as far as I'm concerned! Having said that, I would probably try to find something to bring.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Thanks Celeste!
are you coming? i've gotten lost in who's in and who's out.
(i just finished planting the last of your daylilies this afternoon. After watching the Mets self destruct. i should have just worked in the garden in the 1st place. sigh.)

I'm not neccessarily bringing everything on the list - just whatever anyone wants.
The reason i say it isn't much is because everything i have is the sort of thing everyone has, and i don't think there is a demand for any of it.

Please don't remind me about the Mets, Amy!! I'm in serious mourning / shock here. Celeste is not coming. She has a family event.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

i *knew* there was something i liked about you victor!
i mean, other than the gardening and the witty repartee...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks. Group grieving is more helpful. I'm still shell-shocked.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

My condolences to both of you and to Willie Randolph, etc.

I am bringing black eyed susan for 3 people (possibly more if requested).

Not too exciting, but I have lamb's ear if anyone wants it. I find it useful.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Dave.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

I will bring daylilies, I'll have them tagged. And hostas...some won't be tagged. Go figure..daylillies and hostas...hmm...who woulda thunk it? I'm also going to bring the tubers of a whole butt load of sweet potato vines, both black and the green varieties...not labeled. Some elephant ears that I need to part with, and some plecanthrus that sprouted up all over the place. I can dig up some other stuff that won't hurt me...lol.
Can't wait to see everyone!!!

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

I might be bringing a dwarf maple, of unknown variety, that I'm afraid to try to overwinter...that one will be up for grabs. I might just go crazy the day before and thin all of my beds...lol.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I'm bringing Queen Anne's Lace seed for Amy? I have orange spotted Candy Lilly seeds and rose campion seeds. I have blackberry plants if anyone wants them (they will bear next year). I promised someone cuts from my neighbor's blue hydrangea.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Cat:

Was that me you promised the hydrangea to?

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Probably. I'm just going to cut off some branches as cloe to the bottom as possible that morning.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Hem - what kind of plectanthrus? I looked on PF and it looks like there are lots... Is it something you keep in for the winter?
I'd love black sweet potato vine - i am trying to do a little all black and silver (w/maybe some pink) foliage area.

Cat - i like the idea of a blackberry plant, but on PF some people seem to warn against anyone ever having them due to invasiveness. Should i be afraid?

Let me know if anybody wants any of my boring stuff!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

My vines are huge - but they only get so much room on my 50' x 100' lot. I pull up the volunteers and cut the canes back each year and they are fine.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Would anyone like some equadorian brug cuttings if I get them started? Or some rose campion?

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Seandor - i am interested in rose campion. i know Cat has seeds - are yours seeds or plants?

Cat - yes on QAL seeds and blackberry plant.

Hem - yes on black sweet potato vine. i'll be interested to see what your daylilies are - i am looking for one more very light/white one, and one more very dark/black one... (And then i have room for no more!)

Anybody want anything of mine? i'm heading out to pot up more coleus cuttings now...

The campion are plants :-)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Best of show would be Champion Campion???

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

You betcha!!

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Seandor - i'd love a rose campion plant/s. Actually, that might work well with the silver/black/hot pink area i'm trying to do...

thanks!

Plecanthrus...will need to be kept inside...it's one of those plants that do pretty darn well...the variety I have is 'Mona Lavender' I will also be bringing up some odds and ends that should be overwintered inside as well...the Impomeas(sweet potato vines) begonias...I believe they are all rex, not sure, 'Last Laugh' and 'Palomar Prince' Black mondo grass...that's Ophi...something or another. The largest clumps/most available of the daylilies I have...it's a combo between 'Ed Browning' 'Nasferatu' and 'Jungle Fever' These guys, I know people will argue, but essentially they are all the same, dark dark maroon/merlot flowers with a yellow/chartreuse eye-throat. I planted them all near each other and they all grew into one another. I'm also digging up and dividing 'Wedding Band' There will only be a small amount of those. 'Always Afernoon' I will have more than enough to share with everyone...Coreopsis 'Zagreb' everyone can have a clump or three...And the maple...that's up for grabs...no elbow throwing or spade chucking...not allowed... :-)

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I'd like to be on the short list for the coreopsis, if I may.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

oh . . . did I say I would be interested in some sweet potatoe vine?

I have some purple obedient plants (physostegia virginiana) which I am going to thin out and I'll bring a few along to the RU as well as some "perennial ageratum" which were given to me (mistakenly) as perennial bachelor's buttons but I think the correct Latin name is Conoclinium coelestinum. They bloom in Sept./Oct. and are spread (rather invasively--be warned!) by underground runners. (Picture of both on the What's Blooming thread.) I think I also have some extra tomato seeds I bought this spring (more than I have room for) which I will bring if I can find them.

I'm going to be busy potting everything up over the next few days...I just hope everyone takes what I bring...I'm probably going to pack "heavy" and bring way more than what is needed...it is motivation for me to really get my arse in gear and get out there and thing my beds. Until this DG thing, I only had 2 other peeps to share my extras with...my neighbors all think of me as that "crazy" garden guy and are essentially no help...the 2 peeps I share with, one keeps Brent and Beckys in busy and is more interested in bulbs, the other is very OCD on how/where she plants...and only wants certain things...I usually ended trashing them...so...don't cringe, the maple, daylilies, hostas, clematis, hydrangae, dogwood/physocarpis cuttings, and all of my other extras, I usually throw out, and I get so angry over it...so, with this RU, I'm sharin...lol.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

i can't believe i bought an "always afternoon", because i picked it as the one for the year that i'd add in my quest to break up the happy returns of the landlords. 3 weeks later, pixie is sending out many kinds for postage, and now Hem has even that exact one!
Why do i buy anything?!

BTW - i'd go for one of the dark ones to go near my modred - thanks.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I'm bringing some Monarda 'Raspberry Wine' and some houseplants that I don't want.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Seandor, I'd like rose campion, if you still have it. Hem, that sounds great!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I went to sort the Rose Campion seeds last night and there aren't very many (I was too late in getting them) and they really don't look viable - but I have baby rose campions growing if Seander runs out. I'm bringing some gray sage seeds. The plants have pretty purpleish flowers and die back early in the year.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Hi everyone - these are not really my rose campion. A colleague at work has brought a bunch in today. It looks like there are 15 plants - not big, I am going to put them in paper pots and bring them and those who want them can choose how many they want :-)

I already have some from her garden which I planted about 2 weeks ago, and they are thriving.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

i have a good sized, but ugly looking runner of black peppermint if anyone wants it. it actually made it thru last winter, few of my herbs did, and so far hasn't taken over the word. it smells WONDERFUL - like peppermint candy.
How do i divide tarragon? i was reading about doing cuttings, but i thought i was supposed to divide it at the roots...
i have a lot of portulaca, some in pots, if anyone wants that. it is still blooming like crazy.

does anyone want ANYTHING of mine??? i know its boring stuff, but i feel bad to take and not give.

edited to say: o yeah, my next door neighbor gave me a baggie of "Fancy Garlic Seeds" that his mom brought from Ohio. i don't know what they are, but i hate garlic. i may plant some far away & see what happens, but not all. So, definitely they are up for grabs.

This message was edited Oct 4, 2007 2:57 PM

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I would take a piece of the black peppermint. Garlic is supposed to be good to keep bugs off your roses. Unfortunately I have 19 heads of fancy garlic to plant myself ( what was I thinking? ) so I can't use any of the garlic seeds. Are they really bubils - di they look like tiny garlic cloves?

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

yes, very small, and the "skin"(?) is reddish, like an onion or a peanut.
are they pretty? or just for eating?
Do the plants smell?
The peppermint is yours.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Thanks. They are too small to eat and once you plant them they need to stay in the ground for two growing seasons to probuce bulbs of any size. I don't remember my garlic smelling - unless I broke a leaf or stem.
