I talked to them as well and they really don't want us to come. I had talked to them approx 2 weeks ago and perhaps I talked to another person. The guy I talked to this time said he didn't remember talking to me but perhaps I had talked with his partner. But I had told them we wanted to come this Sunday and while he said, 'the garden isn't looking its best,' he did not go so far as to openly discourage me from coming, the way this guy did now. And he definitely knew this Sunday was the date we were looking at and he just told me to call back closer to the date with numbers of people.
So basically we aren't welcome. :( I mentioned that we were very interested in the sculpture and that some of us were interested in purchasing but he just really didn't seem to want us there. So.....I think we need to reschedule for the spring when things are perking back up for them. Bummer!
Gwen
Little and Lewis field trip
I don't think we should cancel our trip. I just did some research and it looks like there are some other great places on/near Bainbridge. We already know that we are going to Dragonfly farms, so that's good. Bainbridge Nursery is also open from 10:30 to 5 p.m. here is the link to thier website http://www.bainbridgegardens.com/welcome3.html They also have a cafe so we could all have a lovely garden lunch together, here is the menu link http://www.bainbridgegardens.com/newrose.html
Savage Plants and Landscape is also open and they are having a 20% off sale, check out thier website http://www.savageplants.com/promotional.htm Looks pretty fantastic to me!
Here is the link where I found all of the info: http://www.visitkitsap.com/search/things_to_do.asp?act=search_results&CityID=&ID=16&SearchResultsStart=1
Heck with L and L if they don't want us and our $$ I'm sure somebody else will :0) Just my 10 cents worth. Rachel
I want to go to Dragonfly farms for sure. I emailed Heidi about some of the things she has on her plant list that I haven't found anywhere else - like Tetrapanax 'steriod giant'. I WANT this plant. I have wanted this plant for a long time. I only hope I can afford this plant!!
It is way better to see L and L in the spring anyway. They are both really nice. Maybe they just were not on the same page.
I'm in the back of Gwen's car with the maple - this just gets more and more interesting. Pix, when you go to Savage ask them about the lack of colour in the Maple/vine maple. I saw that they have a section just on Japanese Maples - so they should be able to advise. Take a couple leaves with you to show them. I await info, with breath held! And as far as little and lewis, take heart - THEY don't know what they are missing! poopoopoo.
I am looking forward to the Photos Tills, many thanks.
if some of you are still planning to go I could meet you at BG or Dragon Fly Farms, I have some garden art that I make, I want to show Heidi, so I told her I'd be up on Sunday. so whatever you come up with I'll meet you. her prices are a lot less than other nurserys, and she has the eye for the unusual, she worked at Heronswood all those years, so she knows what the customers are looking for. Savage nursery has a large selection of Acer Palmatums among other things. Jim
I'm still planning on coming. Directions to Bainbridge Island seem easy. I want to print a map from 305 to wherever we're planning to meet. From there I'll just follow the leader. (I hope)
Katy
I live in this area I'm trying to come up with a good location to meet for both ferry riders and those who are driving. There is a Safeway on High School which is 2 lights from the ferry and 4 lights from the Agate pass bridge. What do you think?
If you are on the Winslow Ferry.
If you are riding the Edmonds That can be a little more tricky. If you don't know the area. Need to know who will be coming that way ? I can meet you if you want on the way, let me know.
Salvage plants is in Kingston there also is a nursery on Bond rd. called Little Valley Nursery, Which is on the way to Savage from the Island.
I like the people there, Haven't gone lately. Will have DH call and see what sales they are having.
Also from Valley Nursery On my road is Molly Ward Gardens, but they don't sell plants, Its a great place to have a Wedding or special outing. Ill call Sam a see if they have any thing going this time of year. Have known them for years. It Used to be the old Yarn Barn before he bought it, you could buy any type of yarn there was.

So I am avail Sunday. What are the plans? A couple nurseries and lunch? Carol, are you going to be up for shopping in knicky knacky places as well? I've never been to Bainbridge and would really like to check out their overpriced tourist area if we're going to make the trip. ;) Esp if we have the BIG car.
Gwen
Pixydish, that sounds good to me, Jim
Are you talking about Dragonfly Farms on Hansville rd in kingston (Eglon) ? If so how about we meet in the parking lot at Kountry Corners Hwy 307 (Bond rd) and Hansville Rd. It is the Gas station where all the big carvings are and a large parking lot, They a building a new Rite Aid across the street.

Gwen, I just got home - I am definitely up for stopping anyplace you want!!! Let me know via d-mail how you want to meet up, okay? I'm looking forward to seeing/meeting everybody!!
Carole
Pixy- I'm up for anything! I will be at your house at 9 a.m. :0) Rachel
That's the one Tilly! Good idea to meet in a big parking lot! Should we all meet between 10:45 and 11 a.m. at Kountry Corners Hwy 307 (Bond rd) and Hansville Rd (Gas station with big wood carvings.)?
unite lets stone Land L or I could give you all some canes lol
Carole, give me a call at 221.8061. Why don't you come to my house and we'll leave from here. Can you mapquest it and print it out? I don't have my computer hooked up to a printer. Back out the time and let me know what time you will be here for us to leave. Allow time to stop and get coffee before we get on the ferry. ;) We'll go thru the Whidbey Coffee drive-thru at Ken's Korner on the way to the ferry.
Remind me to give you your bulbs!
I'm looking forward to this!
Gwen
Carole and I are confused. Are we going to Bainbridge or Kingston? Which ferry are all you taking?
Gwen
Gwen, I've been looking at maps and I think our best bet is the Edmonds/ Kingston ferry as opposed to going all the way through Seattle to the Bainbridge ferry. It looks to me like Bainbridge is a hop skip and a jump from Kingston so it would be easy to continue there if everyone wanted to (I've no clue where all these nurseries are, but sure as heck want to see them!!!). I checked the ferry schedule and it looks like we should catch the 9:20 ferry (35 minute crossing). If we miss that, we will have to wait until 10:10 which would still keep us pretty close to a 11:00 meeting with the gang. Hope someone will hop in here and confirm that I'm on the right track (or not!).
In case you prefer the Bainbridge ferry, we'd want to catch the 9:35 - if we were to miss that, we would have to wait until 10:40.
Pixy and I will be at the Kountry Corners Gas Station Hwy 307 (Bond rd) and Hansville Rd (Gas station with big wood carvings.) between 10:45 and 11 a.m.
Oh shoot. Pixy, I think we want to take the Edmonds ferry, not the Bainbridge - it will take us right into Kingston. (And we won't have to go through Seattle.) Please correct me if you think that's not the wisest!
Mary, you too, please . . . you take the Edmonds/Kingston ferry all the time to go to work in Lynnwood so you would know best for sure!!! I know you won't be home until midnight or so, but I'll check this in the morning before I go roaring out the door to Gwen's. (HA! I do not roar at 7:00 in the morning!)
You don't want to take my word for any ferries! I am completely unfamiliar with them. I just thought you guys were going to be coming through Bainbridge. Still, it's easy and quick to get to bainbridge from Kingston, then come back and get your ferry when you are finished. That does sound much easier than going through Seattle.
It's really easy to get to that minimart from the Kingston ferry...and it would save you time to take the Kingston Ferry instead-but won't you still have to take the Clinton ferry or drive to Anacortes and then down I-5 just to get to Kingston? Wouldn't it make just as much sense to take the Keystone ferry to Pt Townsend and drive across Hood Canal? (If the schedule works...) Then, you could take either Bainbridge or Kingston back.
And, I may not be able to make it tomorrow. I've got a recurring muscle spasm problem in my lower back that's started acting up this evening (I probably overdid it moving 12" pavers today) . It's very minor in the world of back problems but the worst thing I can do is spend all day sitting when it's acting up-and driving all the way to Kingston from here is plenty of sitting.
Susy-
I hope that you have a phenomenal recovery overnight but I sure understand if you don't make it. Take care. Rachel
Have fun you guys. Pix, don't forget to ask about the vine maple colors. You've got me wondering now . . .
Katie, why can't you join us?
HI Rachel, Thanks! I'll do my best. I'm headed for a nice long, hot shower, a few more stretches, and maybe a nice big glass of wine....
Murmur, Well, there's a reason to drive to Edmonds-You could meet up with Kathy in Edmonds and take the ferry together-and passengers only pay one way....
Murmur sorry I didn't get back to you today by the time I had the chance to call it was very late will call you in A.M.
You could take the ferry to Port Townsend then cross the Hood Canal Bridge, take a left that will take you thru Port Gamble keep going till you come to a stop light then go left the next light is kountry korners turn right you are now at the meeting place. I will wait if you are late.
or take the kingston run and just keep going and I think it will be the 5th or 6th light and Kountry korners will be on your left. if you want to walk (which I dout, cause you will have a hard time carry your prizes back) I will pick you up on my side .
And Kathy if you want I can pick you up on this side.
Susybell:
I hope you recover overnight!! I would love to meet you, But I know back problems I have had my share. Been hurt twice over the last 20 years. The first time was in 1988 they said I had a 30% disability and I would never do what I use to do to, took me 2 years to prove them wrong, and I'm back at it. Lots of TLC
I will be driving a Green Subaru wagon.
See ya all there. And cell phones on
cant wait going to be fun.
If we're going to Kingston, then I think the Edmonds ferry. That's the only way I know of to get to Kingston from here besides the Pt Townsend ferry, which seems way longer. I've done both to Kingston and Edmonds ferry is shorter.
Pixy, do you want to give us your cell number or anyone else going, in case we need to try and communicate. Mine is 425.508.6587.
Gwen
Gwen I dmailed my # to Murmur last night since I saw that she had posted. I will be riding with Pixy. Since Murmur is riding with you I think we have our bases covered, I hope! :0) Tilly and I also dmailed cell #s See you soon!
Oh what fun we had today at least I did, I didn't finish off the trip, So cant wait to hear how they did. Dragon Fly Gardens is a place to see, so wonderful. I'm going to down load my pics now. Pixydish brought me some plants and I have just now finished potting them when she said she had some plants for me I didn't think she met a whole nursery, after potting them all I have no room in my greenhouse to walk, O'my can't wait till spring and that didn't count the ones I bought. and now I cant even remember the names.
Making new tread with pics, as soon as i down load.
Fun, fun, fun, Mary!! I've been thinking about you guys today and how beautiful a day it was for a nurseries trips with gardening friends.
I was successful today, though. I mowed the lawn (and about 1/10 of the big leaf maple leaves I'm going to have) and cleaned the lawn mower. What a relief. I thought I had already had my last mow and then the grass just wouldn't stop growing. And a chunk of it doesn't get sun all day, so it stays pretty wet. About 3/4 of my 1.2 acres is grass, so living with a long lawn all winter isn't my idea of a very human-friendly place. Good lawn mower, good boy. :-)
I also got most of my plants for the trade ready and put them out front ready to load in the truck. A good day, all around.
I'm looking forward to hearing your stories and to seeing your pictures, Mary.
Kathy
Dragonfly Farms is now my favorite nursery in the entire world. Heidi, the owner, is simply a down-to-earth plant lover like the rest of us and she has many, many cool things that you can't get other places because she bought lots of the Heronswood stock when they closed the doors. She also has good taste in plants so she has a wide variety of very cool things from Terra Nova, Proven Winners, and other large nursery suppliers. We had a blast and I only wish I had been made of money today. I had to put stuff back. That never suits me very well. But she gave me some leaves off of her mature Tetrapanax so I will have them to cast with cement!! I better make these really strong because I will have to wait awhile for my Tetrapanax I bought from her to be that large.
A good time was had by all and it was great to meet Mary (Tillysrat) and Hostajim and to see Carole and Gwen again. I'm looking forward to seeing Hostajim's name in the annals of hosta literature because it sounds like he has some awesome hosta crosses coming right along. He's a complete plantsman! Rachel and I had more fun on the way home stopping by Valley Nursery and raiding their 'sad' plants. That means their 50% off area. I got a Phlox 'David Lavender' and a hardy dutchman's pipe vine there for practically nothing. Let's see - also some 5 gallon peonies 2 for 15$, and an ornamental grape that has brilliant red leaves. MUST find a place for that one!
In all, my Prius was completely loaded with plants in every corner, with Rachel even carrying some on her knees all the way home. You haven't lived until you've tried to eat Taco Time with a flat of plants on your lap. What fun! Rachel and I promised Heidi a return trip in the spring. Thanks to Gwen for setting up this fun time! I believe Rachel has a photo of the car as we tucked more plants into the trunck. Maybe she will post it later.
Gwen, what was the name of that vine you saw at Savage Plants that you liked? The one with little purple seedpods? You wrote it down.
I just got home!
Jim (you ought to see his gorgeous art work!), and Mary, left from Dragon Fly Nursery. Pixy and Rachel left us about 3:30 (I think) from Savage Gardens, then Gwen and I went to Bainbridge Island - went through the nursery there and had a bite to eat. Waited 45 minutes for the Bainbridge/Seattle ferry, then had to drive all the way out to Mukilteo - just about drove right on the ferry there. I have to go back to Gwen's tomorrow to pick up my Weeping Cedar (and the little tree that Pixy brought me, which I forgot - Gwen, you can't have it).
Long day, but great, great fun - wish you could ALL have been there! It was great to see Gwen, Pixy, and Mary again, and to meet Rachel & Jim.
KatyMac, on the 10th it looked like you were coming, but must have changed your mind?
Susybell, are you okay? Is your back still hurting?
Tillysrat started a thread with photos from today. Rachel posted some there:

Hey Pix did you know you drove right by my house on the the way to Little Valley nursery if you came from Salvage. Can't believe you got more plants in your car. I should not have left when i did but it took me 3 hours to pot all those great plants you gave me. My greenhouse is full. Standing Room Only..... LOL
