The bittersweet blooms of Fall...

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Mandevilla and Allamanda always seemed similar but am not that familiar with Plumeria.

Older is good! When we get to this stage we just say ~ Oh well ~ and go on with life as we like it!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Gail;
Your Cherrie Jubilee is an Allamanda. I stumbled on its name just as you did when I posted mine. lol.
The Toubouchina and the spicey Jatropha both are tropicals, I'm not sure if they will survive any type of frost? If you've experience with those, care to share? Have yours set any seedpod? My red one (Jatropha) made attractive seedpods. I love those flowers. I lost my Toubouchina to frost one year and haven't seen them offered again at the local nursery.

Beautiful blooms!Looking forward to see more.
Now that I see a closeup of Jewel, I realize I did have it at one time, but this one came up in it's place and my memory did not serve me! I thought the flower looked like eupatorium, but the leaves are so different.I will try not to let it go to seed.I will post my two mist flowers later.

Pod
I grow that same purple celosia that you do. Not good with names so just call it giant cockscomb. It too will reseed easily.
I too am an old retired school guy. Being old is nice in that you can work in the yard as much as you want. Of course body parts are a bit worn.
Does anyone grow the Chandelier (sp) plant. Mine is 8' tall and has 3 huge blooms. It grows that big from seed in one year.
I do not know how to post photos but will learn from a friend next week. Then I can show some of my things and get real names for them.
Plumeria are tropical and fragrant. I have a few but only one has bloomed this year. They root fairly easy from cuttings.
Enjoying you guys and your knowledge.

Somebody was asking about winter hardiness of rock rose? We get fairly cold winters here and my rock rose always comes back. I gets no special protection other than a couple of inches of mulch. I do need to move some of it though because the trees have grown and it doesn't get enough sun now.

I have a spicy jatropha that looks very bare at the bottom because it wasn't getting enough water for awhile. Now I'm wondering whether to cut it back when it goes in the gh and how far to cut it. Anybody know?

I'll try to get out there today and take pictures. Have to get ready for church right now. See ya'.

Mary Lee

Stephanie, I have trouble with the half hardy mallows surviving winter but those blooms are so stinking cute. I've got to try them. If I can make it to the RU, will you still hold a few seeds for me? They would stand a better chance then a division. If I don't make it, i can send you a SASE.

Pod, night owl is a rose, not a great rose. I'm not that fond of it, then it blooms and i can't remember why. lol What is evergreen lantana?
I keep tell myself in need to plant more in pots. I know my herbs would do better and i could grow things l like that gorgeous Rhoeo spathacea.

Gail, love your photos. I'm almost certain my celosias are not the bombay series. Mine came from a pack i picked up at a big box store this spring. Most of the heads matured this summer around 4 inches. The ones that made it through Summer are now about 8 inches. I tried to find Pink Bombay's but all the vendors were sold out around the time i placed my orders.

Speaking of the amaranth family, has anyone tried the chartreuse version of Love-lies-bleeding? I saw a photo of it growing in a large urn and can't get that beautiful image of it out of my brain.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

David is the plant you are thinking of a candlestick, cassia or senna plant? Tall yellow blooms. A friend grew one once.

Bananna ~ if they are in a place where they can reseed, I would let the blue mist flower reseed. Just me but I like it...

Silverfluter ~ Hush ~ lol Please don't tempt me further on the rock rose... last thing I need is more plants... 8 )) BTW, does is like shade or not?

Cocoa_Lulu ~ sorry, I didn't mean evergreen Lantana. Meant to say maybe planting some evergreen plant in amongst the Lantana. That way it would have year round color and interest I guess.

Looking forward to the new bloom photos and posts... pod

lol, Pod. My ears perked, thought the evergreen lantana was something new. I only venture out front three times a year. First to trim the hedges, second to get lantana cuttings and third to plant the cuttings. A true a backyard gardener. I have photos of the house from the 40's and that area was once all roses, maybe someday.

The cassias are my Dh's favorite plant. I always forget to plant them for him, until i see them in Fall bloom, then it's too late.

Podster, I'm with ya! I leave summer kicking and screaming.! I'm usually not too happy about the winter month and the defoliation, short days...but then it gives us lots of time to chat with one another and write about things that happened during the summer and what to try next summer. I wish it wouldn't get under 60F...
Oh...I know there is a bunch of ya'll out there counting the minutes for the first 50F degree day....hehehe...

This is a dvd that a friend did in early spring. Maybe this will work.http://ocean.otr.usm.edu/~jdaniel/mastergardener.html

Unless you are like me and have dial up you should be able to see it. Living in the woods has its drawbacks. Hello 2007.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Wow that was really nice! Thanks - no dial up!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Dial up ~ no luck here. So sad...

Rj ~ I consider moving further south every year at this time... thinking the equator maybe ~ LOL

Love the rampant Ruellia ~ Heck I love all the Ruellia my white R. Katie is still blooming sporadically...

Dde Tex; the dvd is awesome! Beautiful way to introduce one's garden. I coppied the site to one of the threads on MSF, I hope that's ok? Thanks.

This Lady Margaret surprised me by coming back this 2nd season. It's blooming still along with Knock Out single Red Roses.

Lily, this picture is to die for. You need to put this in blooms....it probably wind up as the bloom of the day. I have cream and purple passie....don't you just love my names....they don't compare with LM.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Christi? Put it in where? I'm lost.
Kim

Lily,That photo is delicious. I need a big slice of red velvet cake to go with that! lol

Scroll to the bottom of this page. See Bloom.com....it is part of DG. Don't know how you get it on there. Probably instructions when you go to the URL. If not, D-mail Dave. Someone will answer and give you directions. I have never posted a photo....just love to look at them. Lots of stuff at the bottom of the page....all of them. Gardens, Blooms, Landscapes are all Daves.

I hear ya~! My heart is set on Costa Rica

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Glad that those that could see the dvd liked it.
Kim, not sure what MSF is but it is fine.
Tomorrow a friend is coming over and show me how to post photos on here. That will be better for me. Have some things that are showing out right now.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

David ~ MSF is MidSouth Gardening forum if I am not mistaken. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/region_mids/all/ I looked for it over there but didn't find it. I hoped I could access it there. Isn't it amazing how the blooms flourish this time of year....

Rj ~ odd you said Costa Rica. I am loving all things Costa Rican. A friend brought coffee from there and it is wonderful. I have a Scutellaria costaricana ~ a beautiful tropical bloom. Even the H. sabdariffa does well and is used in foods there. Costa Rican dreaming... lol

Christi;
I think Dave picks out random pics. and posts them on Blooms.com
But I take it as a compliment when you recommended the pics. is to be in there.

Here is my Spicy Jatropha

Thumbnail by Lily_love
Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Jatropha's seedpods. This is my 1st year with this tropical, gessigail, it's said that this plant blooms all year round. From my observation it's blooming on new growths. If you trim them back you're going to lose those potential blooms?
If you must shape the shrub, do so selectively on those weakened and dead branches. Prune out the crossed branches that impedes air-circulation. While you do that, I'd recommend repot it with fresh potting soild. Prune the root ball 1/3 off, trim off all encirclying, and dried brittle roots. By root prunning, you'll rejuvinate your potting plant. Remember to keep your newly 'pampered' plant pot out of direct sun for a few days before you gradually 'harden them back out to its usual sunny area.
Important; do not give full strenght fertilizer immediately after prunning the root. You could however, soak your plant's root ball in root stimulator's solution, or Vitamin B-1 while you working on repotting 'em.
Happy gardening.

I spoke too soon about Lady Margaret passi. It does make seedpod, but they're more likely sterile. The fruits though appear round, and not oval like that of our native Maypop's. :-)

Beautiful photos DawninTx ~ I love your fall blooms. Is the Blue Butterfly in a pot or in ground? Most unusual and attractive blooms. Glad you shared, may I ask what zone you are in?
