I don't know if anyone will pick this thread back up, if not I'll repost.
Follow-up question.... When digging the little trench between the grass and garden how deep and how wide do you dig???
what does everyone use for edging
Mostly I have seen areas about 8 inches of mulched ground, not really a "trench" between the grass and flower bed. Personally I perfer a border of shaped, low cement so the mower can go over the edge.
Rocks. Because I garden on top of a big one and we have tons of canteloupe sized ones around to make decorative borders with. My son has laid out many of these including the one in the picture below. I have a few raised beds made from wood and one has a side made of two telephone poles. {before you freak, they were there when I got here 25 years ago, I never grew vegetables or herbs next to the poles, and one has a plank nailed to it to make a flat surface where I put pots and window boxes and the border along these is about to become hosta and shade plants because the neighbor's trees shaded out this area many years ago} and I have a stone wall that has the stones mortared in along one side of the driveway.

When I do the edging between the lawn and the beds it is around 4" wide and 4" deep in a V shape. It fills in over time. When I use rocks to trim a bed, then a 4" buffer zone in front of them of mulch so the grass can be cut and no trimming is required.
I dig down about 4 inches, flip the sod/soil and then fill in the trench so the lawnmower wheel can ride on it. This way DH can mow right up to the edge without tires dropping in and shaving.
I don't know if it is just me or not but I do need everything to look clean! I hate weeds where they shouldn't be or plants coming up between rocks - that is is just me. In my gardens I need/want it to look clean - I did use a black plastic last year to separate the grass from my in ground planters and it seemed to work ok. No problems yet - I just mow over the plastic and the grass gets cut and my planters are fine.
I use the mulch mowing strip. In the back, this mulch is shredded leaves or grass clippings. out front where people can see, I make the mow strip from bagged mulch.
